1 ABOUT MAGEC: Established in 1988, the Miami Area Geriatric Education Center (MAGEC) is a Consortium of organizations that work together to coordinate and provide interdisciplinary geriatric continuing education for professionals who serve the elderly in the southeast and central areas of Florida. MAGEC is group of educators and health care professionals from the University of Miami, Florida Atlantic University, Barry University, Florida International University, University of Central Florida, the Miami Department of Veterans Affairs Geriatric Research, Education, and Clinical Centers, The Miami-Dade Area Health Education Center (AHEC), and the West Palm Beach VA Hospital who contribute to the planning and development of educational programs. Since 2010, MAGEC extended its area of service and now reaches geriatric health care professionals in the southeast and central areas of Florida to include Miami-Dade, Brevard, Broward, Glades, Indian River, Martin, Monroe, Palm Beach, St Lucie, Volusia, and Orange counties. Lynn College of Nursing. Dr. Wiese s research has centered on the rural older adult and knowledge of Alzheimer s disease. With the support of the FAU Iota Xi Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International, and in collaboration with the College of Nursing s Dr. Christine Williams and Dr. Ruth Tappen, Dr. Wiese is continuing this research in rural Florida and older African Americans living in rural communities in Virginia. Dr. Wiese was recently selected as a 2014 Hartford Geriatric Institute Research Scholar held at New York University. Dr. Wiese was also selected as a finalist for the Hartford Health and Aging Policy fellowship. Dr. Wiese is in practice at the FAU College of Nursing s Green Memory and Wellness Center as one of the team members conducting neuropsychiatric evaluations for persons referred to the Center for driving evaluations. Dr. Wiese is fulltime faculty at the College of Nursing, and serves as vice-chair of the city of Boca Raton s Elder Affairs Advisory Board. Christine L. Williams, DNSc, PMHCNS-BC Dr. Williams is an experienced nursing educator and researcher, certified in psychiatric mental health nursing, who has presented her work to both national and international audiences. She has been PI or investigator on numerous studies related to mental health in older adults. She has published extensively in the field of geropsychiatry most notably on cognitive impairment and cultural issues. Dr. Williams has over 15 years of experience mentoring PhD students, postdoctoral and junior faculty and has received several mentorship awards including mentor and co-mentor in the pre and postdoctoral program sponsored by Hartford Foundation/Atlantic Philanthropies. She served on the John A Hartford Building Academic Geriatric Nursing Capacity Scholar s Program selection committee for 8 years. The Interprofessional Geriatric Training (IGT) Nursing Module is provided by FAU s College of Nursing and the Miami Area Geriatric Education Center (MAGEC). The IGT Nursing Module will offer Interprofessional Geriatric training sessions for nurses and other health care professionals that provide services to older adults in a variety of settings. The American Nurses Credentialing Center highlights the lack of nurses trained in geriatric skills: - More than 157,200 RNs have completed a master s level program to become CNSs, NPs, or both - Only 3% of all advanced practice nurses are certified in geriatric nursing - 25% of nursing programs lack a gerontological faculty member.
3 9 April 10, 2015 Session Schedule 2 Clare Singer, BS Clare Singer is a speech-language pathology graduate student at Florida Atlantic University. Throughout the program, she has been involved in conducting research through Florida Atlantic University's large-scale research project titled, Healthy Aging Research Initiative (HARI). This research focuses on identifying factors to improve the quality of life of the healthy aging elderly population. Clare's involvement is related to correlations of Swallowing, Voice, Hearing and Quality of Life variables. As a result, she has been chosen to present the findings last fall at an industry conference and more recently at a Florida Atlantic University Research Day event. She is currently enjoying her clinical experience and anticipates graduating in August of this Ruth Tappen, EdD, RN, FAAN Dr. Tappen is Professor and Christine E. Lynn Eminent Scholar at the College of Nursing, Florida Atlantic University. She was the Founder and Director of the Louis and Anne Green Memory and Wellness Center from She has been the principal investigator on a number of studies related to management of Alzheimer s and related memory disorders. She recently completed several major studies which include: Culture Bias in Testing Expressive Ability in Dementia, funded by the National Institute for Nursing Research and Doctor Nursing Practice: Focused on Caring for a Diverse Aging Population, funded by the Division of Nursing, U.S. Health and Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administration. Raddock Distinguished Professorship for Holistic Nursing and she is a fellow in the American Academy of Nursing. Dr. McCaffrey has been at the Christine E. Lynne College of Nursing at Florida Atlantic University since 1999 and was previously the program director for the Doctor of Nursing Practice Program. She has conducted several studies in the area of creating healing environments. She is the author of numerous articles on holistic nursing. She is currently principal investigator on a NIH funded study on the use of chair yoga as an intervention to reduce pain in older adults. María Ordóñez, DNP, ARNP/GNP-BC Dr. Ordóñez is a board certified Gerontological Nurse Practitioner who specializes in caring for the older adult through the diagnosis, treatment and management of acute and chronic conditions that are generally associated with aging. Her practice experience encompasses nursing rehabilitation facilities (skilled nursing, post-acute and long term care) and memory disorder clinic. Dr. Ordóñez s scholarly accomplishments have focused on improving health outcomes of older adults transitioning from the hospital to the skilled nursing facilities post open-heart surgery and with cognitive impairment. Enhancing care in the skilled nursing facilities through excellence in clinical practice and care coordination has been the focus of Dr. Ordóñez s doctoral work/capstone. The population 65 years or older numbered 39.6 million in 2009, the latest year for which data is available. They represented 12.9 percent of the U.S. population, about one in every eight Americans. The average length of stay for people age 65+ was 5.6 days; the comparable rate for people of all ages was 4.8 days.
5 7 4 Debra Hain, PhD, APRN, ANP, GNP-BC Dr. Hain is a board certified gerontological nurse practitioner who has practice experience within nephrology nursing, memory disorder clinic and hospice care. Dr. Hain s scholarly endeavors have focused on improving health outcomes of older adults with chronic kidney disease and those with cognitive impairment. Her current research interest involves implementation of strategies aimed at reducing the risk of potentially avoidable 30-day rehospitalizations of communityresiding older adults who are discharged home with home health care. Charlotte Ladd, PhD, MSN, MA, RN, OCN Dr. Ladd is an adjunct instructor and a PhD candidate in the Christine E Lynn College of Nursing. She will receive her PhD degree at commencement in May She recently defended her dissertation entitled Zafè neg se mistè: A ground theory study of end-of-life decision-making for Haitian American families in South Florida. She is the author of two peer-reviewed articles related to end of life and Haitian American culture. She has presented on topics related to end of life at national and international conferences. By 2030, there will be about 72.1 million older people, almost twice their number in In 2009, almost all (93.5%) non-institutionalized people 65+ were covered by Medicare. Charles P. Buscemi, PhD, ARNP, FNP-BC, CWCN Dr. Buscemi is a Clinical Assistant Professor at Florida International University. He is also a Nurse Practitioner specializing in the care and treatment of complex wounds. He is dually board certified as a Family Nurse Practitioner and as a Wound Care Nurse. He has multiple publications and has presented at the local, regional and international level on wound care, transcultural issues and geriatric nursing. Katherine Chadwell, DNP, MBMSc, ARNP, GNP-BCHS, CPHQ Dr. Chadwell has a doctorate in nursing practice from Florida Atlantic University and is a clinical nurse specialist and board certified geriatric nurse practitioner. She is trained in primary care, long-term care, and acute care. She is currently Associate Professor and PhD in nursing student at the Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing at Florida Atlantic University. During her 30-year tenure in clinical practice she maintained certification in Critical Care (CCRN) for over 25 years and worked as a clinical specialist for an open heart surgery program, where she was involved in all aspects of clinical care and program management. Dr. Chadwell has also worked as a NICHE (Nurses Improving Care of Health system Elders) coordinator where she developed and implemented concepts for geriatric acute care and served as chair of the falls and policy and procedure committees. Lori R. Carpenter, LCSW, ACHP-SW Lori has been with Hospice of Palm Beach, now TrustBridge Health for nearly nine years, most of which was as a Social Worker on a team helping patients and families cope with the changes, emotions and demands of dealing with a life limiting illness. Lori is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with additional certification in Hospice and Palliative Care. Her Social Work career, spanning over twenty years, includes work with substance abuse as well as the chronic mentally ill population served by South County Mental Health Center.
6 5 6 Lenny Chiang-Hanisko, PhD, RN cultural diversity. Dr. Chiang-Hanisko is an associate professor at Florida Atlantic University. She received BSN from the University of Dubuque, an MSN from Wayne State University, and her doctorate degree from Boston College. She has a graduate certificate in Nursing Education and is certified in End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium (ELNEC) core training program. Dr. Chiang- Hanisko s research focuses on polypharmacy issues among ethnically diverse populations, aging and gerontological issues, and Janelle Christensen, PhD, MPH (AAGE Member since 2006) Dr. Christensen's research interests lie at the intersection of disaster management and aging studies, exploring how community dwelling families respond to emergency preparedness and disaster planning while simultaneously providing care for family members with Alzheimer s disease. She completed both PhD in Applied Biocultural Medical Anthropology and a Masters in Public Health (MPH) at the University of South Florida and has done Socio-legal research in intentional communities (Camphill Communities) based on the care of individuals with developmental disabilities in both Germany and the United States while completing her MA in Sociology of Law. Before earning these degrees, Dr. Christensen worked as an Emergency Medical Technician in California and an Activities Coordinator in long-term care. She is currently a Grant Writer and Anthropology Instructor at Palm Beach State College. Older women outnumber older men at 22.7 million older women to 16.8 million older men. About 30 percent (11.3 million) of noninstitutionalized older people live alone (8.3 million women, 3 million men). Deborah Elkins, DNP, MBA, FNP-BC Dr. Elkins is a board certified family nurse practitioner with over 20 years of experience in clinical nursing practice. She earned her BSN from Radford University in Radford, VA and an MBA from Virginia Tech. Dr. Elkins earned her MS in the Nurse Practitioner track at FAU in 2000 and her DNP from Chatham University in Pittsburgh in Her nursing background has included positions in the ICU, med-surg, community health, migrant health, forensic nursing and family practice. She is currently a PhD student in the Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing at FAU and an adjunct faculty member in the undergraduate nursing program at FAU. Dr. Elkins research interests include gerontology, healthy aging and public health policy. Valarie Grumme, MSN, RN, CCRN Valarie Grumme started her nursing career after several years as a retail buyer for major department stores on both coasts. She has a passion for critical care nursing, where she sees the opportunity to holistically nurture both patient and family within an increasingly technological environment. Valarie has been certified in critical care nursing in She has held several nursing leadership positions in her career, and currently practices as a Clinical Nurse Manager for a high acuity MICU/CCC at Memorial Regional Hospital. Her interest in teaching was sparked when invited to teach critical care topics at a local college of nursing. She received her Master s degree in nursing in 2010 and is currently a nursing PhD student at FAU with a research interest in the emotional and psychological aspects of the organ transplantation experience from both the donor family and the transplant recipient s perspective. In 2007, about 12.9 million people age 65 and older were discharged from short-stay hospitals. This is a rate of 3,395 for every 10,000 people age 65+, which is about three times the comparable rate for people of all ages (which was 1,149 per 10,000).
