3 Preface Purpose of Booklet (Web Version) As a close partner with schools, the Development Institute (CDI) has systematically organised a series of Professional Development Programmes (PDPs) on curriculum development for school heads and teachers. With the advent of Learning to Learn 2.0, the purposes of this booklet are to help them achieve personal learning goals, gain professional knowledge, develop pedagogical and leadership skills suited to the needs of their students and contexts of their schools. To enable schools to plan and co-ordinate the professional development of teachers at the school level for the 2014/15 school year, CDI has prepared this Booklet (Web Version) on Professional Development Programmes for Heads and Teachers of Primary Schools. The details are also available at the website: The programme information will be revised or updated in response to changing needs and circumstances. their schools, they may integrate what they learnt with their school-based professional development programmes in professional sharing as well as building communities of practice at schools to promote the professional capacity among colleagues. Design & Focus of Programmes The design of the programmes aims to sustain the curriculum reform introduced since 2001/02 school year so as to further enhance the quality of primary education. With reference to the related survey results alongside feedback of school heads and teachers collected through various channels, areas that requiring greater emphasis are thus included. The PDPs to be offered in this school year focus on the following: i) Enhancing teachers understanding and mastery of whole-school curriculum planning, implementation and evaluation (e.g. holistic planning for curriculum interface across different key stages, IT in, Chinese Language Second Language Learning Framework, self-directed learning, values education, education for sustainable development/ environmental education, healthy lifestyle), and Based on the changes in the education arena, schools may have already identified school-based capacity building needs for their teachers. We hope that schools could make full use of these courses organised by CDI in raising the awareness and knowledge of different topics among the participating teachers. Upon the return to ii) Deepening learning and teaching strategies, series of training programmes regarding IT in have been added to support the launch of the Fourth Strategy for Information Technology (IT) in, as well as continual support for

4 teachers on enhancing catering for learner diversity (including students with special education needs), promoting reading across the curriculum, nurturing of generic skills and enhancing assessment literacy. Information of Student Activities In the annex, a list of primary school students learning activities (2014/15) is provided so as to facilitate schools early planning of student learning activities and cultivate Life-wide Learning in schools. Organisation of Booklet (Web Version) PDPs in this Booklet (Web Version) are presented in two categories: (A) Management, Leadership and Planning and (B) Sustaining the and Assessment Reform, which include a variety of programmes on different curriculum emphases, learning and teaching strategies for various curriculum areas and courses for specific groups of school personnel (e.g. new primary school curriculum leaders, new panel chairpersons, new teachers and librarians). Each programme is indicated in its title whether it is a new, re-run (programme content identical or with minor adaptations) or refreshed (programme content with more than 50% updates) course. School heads, teachers and other members of the staff may quickly identify programmes that may interest them through browsing the first three columns of the tables which indicate the theme, the target group and the title of the programmes. Teachers professional development cannot be accomplished merely through self-learning, but also with the professional development opportunities offered by the programmes, which are desirably complemented by doing in real classroom and school settings, professional discourse, collaboration and sharing among teachers. Through different forms of learning and the dynamic, interactive knowledge exchange process, teachers professional knowledge is enhanced and the development of schools as learning communities is facilitated. Feedback CDI would take into consideration of feedback from school heads and teachers on courses delivered this year and continue to design appropriate programmes to meet the needs in the coming years. All views and suggestions from school heads and teachers are welcome and please send them to: Kindergarten and Primary Section Development Institute Bureau 13/F Wu Chung House 213 Queen s Road East Wan Chai, Hong Kong or to: [email protected]
