InSPE Gazette Issue 3, 13th February 2015 This week, at InSPE, FRIENDSHIP is off the scales, Joseph (P5-7) said. That made the editors of the InSPE Gazette wonder. They did some research and found out from Tudor (P5-7) that we shoud have a friendometer. How far up the scales are you? F R I E N D O M E T E R FUNNY RELIABLE IMAGINATIVE EASYGOING NATURAL DEAR OPEN MAGIC ENJOYABLE THOUGHTFUL ENERGETIC RESOURCEFUL Please wear this FRIENDOMETER and use it in case of emergency! Friendship Recipe The children in Primary 5/6/7 came up with a list of ingredients for a great friendship. Use these ingredients to create a great friendship recipe and send it to us. The best one will be published in our next issue. From the Headteacher Dear parents, As always it has been a busy start to the new term and it is amazing how quickly the time is passing. As you will see, however, the children and pupils have been busy learning about a great deal of different things and I hope you enjoy reading all about what has been happening in the various classrooms. Whilst the day-to-day teaching and learning is obviously important, it is particularly pleasing to read when our pupils achieve success outside the classroom and in the wider community. On Saturday 24 th January five pupils from our oldest class represented the school in the Public Speaking competition. This was hosted by another school in the city and our congratulations go to Adi, Anna, Mateusz, Natalie and Tudor. Our awards of a third place and two honourable mentions are the best that we have Iain Davidson ever achieved. Well Head of School done to you all!

Page 2 InSPE Gazette On Saturday 24 th January five children from Primary 5-7 will be taking part in a public speaking competition for 8 to 11 year olds, organised by the English Speaking Union of Romania. Mateusz, Natalie, Anna, Adi and Tudor have prepared their speeches and practiced them before the children in Primary 3 to 7 in assembly. They have to speak for two minutes before a panel of judges on the theme Life is a Journey not a Destination using good speaking practice like speaking clearly and using humour and body language to get the message across. At the end of the speech, the children are asked questions by the panel about what they have said and have to think on their feet in order to be able to answer them. All in all, a challenging experience for these children to rise to! The right to happiness is a right we must always hope for and nevertheless, fight for. The Harap Alb Playground is only a small brick on the bridge of humanity towards a normal childhood. Our hope is for every child to make the most of their one chance at childhood, even for children who live at Harap Alb. Thanks to InSPE Parents Association & Miss Becky s great efforts we are thrilled to see Harap Alb project moving forward. On the 21th of December 2014 the surface of the playground was covered with rubber (tartan) tiles assuring the area is now safe for children to play there. Before that, a team of friendly volunteers have worked hard to clean and clear the area preparing the space for the incoming construction work. The Playground is a work in progress. With the support that we were able to raise we are hoping to acquire swings, slides, a wooded fence to go around and other items the children may use to play with. Stay tuned and keep on fighting for the right to a healthy childhood, one that all children are entitled to have! Together we can make a difference!

Page 4 InSPE Gazette On 4th of February Green Class children celebrated the Tu B Shevat -The New Year for Trees. On the day, people are encouraged to care for their natural environment. It's the time for people to plant and/or care for trees, bushes and plants. Jewish people mark this day by eating a symbolic meal of fruit and nuts or by planting trees. For us this festival was a great opportunity to talk to children about the importance of trees and wood in our lives. Teaching children to care for the environment may make a difference in the world they live in as adults. The children learnt that trees are an important part of our world. They provide wood for building and pulp for making paper. We also found out that trees provide homes for all sorts of insects, birds and other animals. Many types of fruits and nuts come from trees. Trees also help to keep our air clean. Thanks to Mr and Mrs Sharon, on this special day, children from Green Class ate fruit, cupcakes in the shape of flowers, painted apples in order to decorate an apple tree and discovered the story of "The tree and the man". After the winter celebrations we are happy to welcome back parents and children that are attending the Mother and toddler group. In our first session we had fun trying out different activities and toys. We played with playdough, rollers and different cookie cutters, poured coffee beans and rice from one container to another and painted on different sized and coloured paper. The children also enjoyed trying out toys with sounds, buttons and flaps. Everybody had lots of fun!

Issue 3, 13th February 2015 Page 5 This term, one of our topics was Clothes. The children were encouraged to try to put on/take off different items of clothing in our Clothes shop. The most interesting ones, that everybody was eager to try, were dresses and shoes. Some of the girls also enjoyed trying accessories like hats and necklaces. We had great fun washing the clothes in the water tray. Pink The children enjoyed rubbing soap bars on the clothes and putting them on the edge of the water tray to dry. Another of their favourite activities was gluing different fabric pieces on coloured card. They enjoyed looking through the fabrics and choosing their favourite colours and textures. This term the children are learning about people who help us. In the last two weeks we have been learning about the job of a doctor and a nurse. We made a hospital in the role play area with beds and medical instruments and a reception area. The children enjoyed pretending to give injections, using plasters and giving medicine to each other. They liked visiting the school nurse in her office. We will continue with this theme in the coming weeks and learn about the role of a dentist and a vet. Orange

Page 6 InSPE Gazette Green This half term green class children will be engaged in a project called Story land and our topic will be There was a princess long ago.we will be talking about stories from all over the world, castles and we will also be encouraging the children to talk about their favourite story. Together with the children we will create the characters of our story and we will develop the storyline through all the next six weeks. Through the storyline we meet the needs of all children in a way that is developmentally appropriate and child centered. The idea is to enthuse the children in their learning by making connections with the external world of their reality and the inner world of their creative imaginations. We will be exploring the castle role-play area in our classroom and look at how people used to live in castles in the past. e.g. How lives were different without electricity, radiators and computers. We will also be writing a story of our own by making our own little story books. Primary 1 A and Primary 1 B This half term our topic in Primary 1 has been Food, for the last couple of weeks we have been focusing on fruit and vegetables. During our maths lessons we have been discussing what our favourite fruits are, collecting the data and then putting them into graphs to see which are the most and least popular in the class. We have also been very creative making mosaic fruit and vegetable pictures. The children also made portraits of themselves using different types of food, for example pasta as hair and seeds for eyes. They look fantastic and we hope you like them! We learnt about the famous artist Paul Cézanne who painted 200 pictures of apples, and the children created their own paintings using watercolours and oil pastels. The children also enjoyed cooking with Mrs Davidson making yummy Scottish shortbread. We would like to thank all the parents that have come into the classes to cook with us, making delicious dishes from their native countries.

Issue 3, 13th February 2015 Primary 2A have travelled back in time even beyond any historical record to the prehistoric period when dinosaurs ruled the planet. We have been searching for fossils and then analysing them to determine which type of creature they belonged to. It has been dangerous work, but as you can see from the pictures, we have taken careful precautions to ensure our own safety and also to protect the various specimens we have found and examined. From our findings, we have then used our imaginations and created pictures and images of what we think the dinosaurs would have looked like. Page 7 Primary 2 A

Page 8 InSPE Gazette Primary 2 B Primary 2B students returned from winter holidays to an exiting week of Kwanzaa and Chinese New Year celebrations. We made a Chinese dragon head, Chinese lanterns, and painted Chinese characters in calligraphy. After that we moved to unit on People Who Help Us. The children have set up their own hospital role play in the classroom, and have learned from Miss Camelia, our school nurse, about many of the tools doctors and nurses use to help people. In Mathematics we are exploring time and measurement, and in Art we are experimenting with lines, colours, and shading. Primary 3 Primary 3 have started a journey around the world guided by Jules Verne s character Phileas Fogg. They stopped for a while in the African grasslands gazing at the amazing sunset. Then they entered the village of the Masai tribe, learning about their culture and playing African rhythms on drums. They painted the amazing animals from Africa in the style of Tinga Tinga art playing with colours and patterns. They have created maps of the world where they identified different physical features. The next stop was the rainforest. The children have created a 3D diorama of the three layers of the rainforest. The children also used different media to make plants and animals and place them in their habitat. The children have classified animals and learned about different ways they adapt.

Issue 3, 13th February 2015 Page 9 Primary 4 Primary 4 children have had a lot of fun learning all about Water! We have explored water as a liquid, solid and a gas. We made delicious water experi- ments such as hot chocolate or fruit ice-cream to notice the water changes. We even created our own rain! We know everything about the water cycle and fancy words such as evaporation, condensation, precipitation, run-off, and ac- For the start of this term, the pupils in Primary 5-7 are taking a very mature approach to an often complex and Primary 5-7 difficult subject with their new topic "Children during the World War 2", focusing on researching and learning about how children s lives were changed by the difficult times. They are also learning about what being an evacuee meant and what rationing was and the impact on people`s lives. They have already had the opportunity to see some military objects and find out more about a soldier`s life. Studying Anne Frank`s Diary in literature gave them a wonderful chance to experience deep feelings and write about them in the form of diary entries.

Issue 3, 13th February 2015 Page 11 Extra curricular activities Our most recent House Team events was on Thursday 29 th. All the primary children met together in the dome and split into their house teams. Each team was then presented with the same set of resources: a pile of newspaper and some tape, and then given the same task: to build something that will support the weight of a child 30 centimetres or more above the ground without additional support from people. The teams were given a set amount of time in which to construct and test out their designs. Everyone got involved, even the staff got themselves tangled in tape and paper in the process. Once the time was up, each team had to demonstrate in turn whether or not their design was successful. Each team was awarded points for their success as well as points for team work during the process. Primary 3 had a fantastic Bake Sale this half term. We were very busy cooking and baking and we had lots of fun while at it! We had cupcakes, pies, pastry, chocolate deserts - which one was your favourite? A huge thank you to all who sent cakes and treats on the day, but most of all a big well done to the P3 children.

Page 12 InSPE Gazette Thank you Mr and Mrs Davidson! The teachers would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr. Davidson for his support, guidance and opportunities he provided during his time as Head of School. As a staff, a school and a community we have all benefited from his leadership, vision and educational knowledge. We were extremely grateful that he was always willing to listen to our ideas despite a very busy schedule and provided us with strategies to overcome the everyday challenges we face as teachers. He always led through example with his dedication to the school and the positive relationships he struck with each child. Despite his fear of shaving foam and messiness, he always put on a brave, happy face on his regular visits to the nursery where he was always a popular guest and he had the same engaging affect when visiting primary classes. He will always be fondly remembered first and foremost for this positive, happy relationship with children, teachers and parents. We would also like to thank Mrs. Davidson for her tireless work developing the curriculum and helping her colleagues develop their teaching practice. We wish both of them all the best as they move onto the next stage of their lives. InSPE Teaching staff We re on the web and on Facebook!
