1 newsletter 12 December 6 WELCOME The end of first term is in sight but that certainly doesn t mean we are taking things slowly here at ISL! The past week was again filled with lots of fun learning activities. On Monday Pre-Primary went on a little fieldtrip to visit the BLUUB which you will see pictures of further on in this newsletter. Thank you Ellen for joining us and helping out! Also thanks to Miss Lydia s husband Jon, who took beautiful pictures! Today Sinterklaas visited our school and what an exciting event that was! Sinterklaas arrived early in the morning in a fancy sportscar and in the afternoon he brought the ISL-students a special visit in Miss K s room. Our students must have been very good the past year because Sinterklaas brought lots of fun stuff for them to play with during rainy day recess! Thank you Sinterklaas! And thank you to the Terbank school for including us in the festivities! We try to keep our ISL-Facebook page up-to-date with the latest news. It s a great way for your family and friends in your home countries to see what your children are doing at school! WHAT S BEEN GOING ON? Let me guide you through some of the learning that has been going on in the different groups this past week: Pre-Primary group (Miss Lydia): What an interesting week we had! With a little investigation and introspection, students have noticed some changes in our classroom. As the children learn to become more independent they now have their names on hooks to hang their coats and a place to keep their shoes. With a bit of configuration, a sensory bin was added next to an area where children can now grab scissors, crayons, markers, pencil and paper to create whatever they wish, whenever they wish. Our classroom also has a Christmas tree which the children have decorated with different ornaments they have made this week. The colour of the week was orange and was celebrated by eating many mandarins and going to the Bluub, a creative space in an orange structure by the Vaart in Leuven. Helena observed that the space was like an orange peel - white on the inside and orange on the outside. A great time was had by all, and it was good to get some experience out of class before our big field trip coming up! Next week, we will work on our production of the Three Little Pigs, create gifts for each other and of course, go to Mechelen to watch a performance of Peter and the Wolf. We will review ISL newsletter 1

2 the letters that we have learned thus far and start again with the letter of the week, beginning with the letter C, when we return in January. Great links for learning at home: Peter and the Wolf, Walt Disney David Bowie Narrates Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf Silly Symphonies, The Three Little Pigs Group 1 (Miss Miriam and Miss Cathy): In Literacy, pupils finished up their study of thanksgiving this week. They read fiction and nonfiction stories about thanksgiving and watched a video about the Plymouth plantation museum in Massachusetts. Pupils were then able to transfer their IPC knowledge of vocabulary regarding the passing of time, to compare and contrast the pilgrims and Native Americans. Group 1 worked further on character trait through the story "David goes to school" by David Shannon. They learned more about characters having personality, and that authors reveal that personality by the actions characters do in the story, their feelings, and their physical looks. Pupils have also started to work on the script for their end of term production. Through this, they have been practicing recognising and using direct speech within text. Maths in Grade 1 and 2 has been about doubling numbers. Year 2 have been practicing halving as well and learning strategies for doubling and halving more complex numbers. There has also been a focus on recognising currency (euros) and coins of different denominations. Please note in our Maths Abacus curriculum, currency is referred to as pounds and pence from the British system. We feel it is important for pupils to be able to apply what they are learning to Euros, the currency of Belgium. Therefore, please help your child to become familiar with Belgian money by making small coins available for them if required for a homework task. Thank you! Maths in Grade 1 and 2 has been about doubling numbers. Year 2 have been practising halving as well and learning strategies for doubling and halving more complex numbers. There has also been a focus on recognising currency (euros) and coins of different denominations. Grade 3 focused on rounding numbers to the nearest 10 and on ordering numbers as well. We worked with decimals for the first time! ISL newsletter 2

3 IPC Through the subject of Technology, our budding young designers have done a fantastic job this week! They have produced original board game designs and started designing and making their own puppets. Pupils have learnt how to analyse existing products by looking for important features. They have looked at puppets from around the world including Indonesian Rod Puppets, Chinese Shadow puppets, the Victorian Punch and Judy and Marionettes as well as more commercially produced puppets available locally. Group 1 are starting to understand how important it is to plan how to make something before they start making. Think tank! Last week s question:- In which country was Chess first played? Answer: India Well done to everyone who answered the question correctly! This week s question: How do you know if a toy is safe to play with? Don t forget to post your answers before Thursday. Good Luck! UPCOMING ACTIVITIES: THURSDAY DECEMBER 12: FIELDTRIP TO MECHELEN (also see letter attached to this ) FRIDAY DECEMBER 13: TERBANK SCHOOL CHRISTMAS HAPPENING WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 18: ISL END OF TERM HOLIDAY PERFORMANCE for parents (starts at 10.30h. and is followed by a little get together/details to follow!) 4 ISL will close for two weeks during winter break but will be open for visitors Friday, January 3 POVERELLO Some parents have already brought in some goods for Poverello. Thank you for that! Our PTA-president will take it all over to Poverello Leuven before Christmas. So please, if you still want to bring in some items such as pasta, apple sauce, coffee, sugar, feel free to do so. Your support will be much appreciated! PTA Our PTA will take care of the catering at our ISL-holiday performance on Wednesday, December 18. Thank you for that!
