2 PHOTOVOLTAIC (PV) MARKET DYNAMICS The global PV market has been growing rapidly during the past years. Despite the International Financial Crisis during , the PV Market continued to grow and the forecasts of international organisations, such as EPIA (European Photovoltaic Industry Association), were overtaken. In early 2010 the world cumulative installed power exceeded 23 GW. The market s momentum continues throughout 2010, while longterm growth is projected to be higher than 15%. The European market, though at a decreasing rate, will still be at the focus, as a continuously growing demand is seen on the side of Germany and in other European markets, such as Italy, France, Greece and the U.K. Furthermore, the North American market (USA and Canada), as well as that of Asia, with China s increasing push into the Renewable Energy Market, India, and the stable presence of Japan, provide a new perspective and long-term interest in further investments and developments. 5 SILCIO PRODUCTION FACILITIES Wafer line The cornerstone of the manufacturing facility Yearly Production Capacity: 45+ MW of Wafers The wafer production facility is the basis for the successful operation of the plant, guaranteed by the high efficiency of the equipment. The choice is clear. SILCIO utilizes exclusively solar grade silicon produced by the Siemens process by first tier silicon producers, which are the only ones capable of satisfying its high standards. All the above, contribute towards achieving an annual production capacity above 45 MWp in multi-crystalline silicon wafers of 200 µm thickness, which conform to the most rigorous technical standards. The plant s groundbraking furnaces produce 4 ingots of 1200 kg total weight in each 43 hour cycle, thus recording significant savings in time and energy consumption compared to the typical industry average of 240 kg of silicon ingots produced in a 52+ hour cycle. The increased level of automation in SILCIO minimizes human interference with the wafers resulting in high productivity, minimum wafer breakage and low energy consumption. 5

6 SILCIO PRODUCTION FACILITIES Cell Line The technological edge Annual Production Capacity: 30+ MW A PV Cell manufacturing company can only be as good as the technology it employs. Silcio selected the top choices of German technology, in order to satisfy today s production targets, as well as those of the future. Furthermore, it has secured collaborations with the most credible technical partners of the PV sector, allowing it to continuously evolve and improve its competitiveness. SILCIO has adopted Roth & Rau A.G. technology and has secured the licenses to use the know-how of the ECN Institute of Netherlands, a world leader in increasing cell efficiency. The ongoing collaboration with the technical advisors of TST-C Thomas Schmidt Consultants GmbH, contribute technical experience from the very heart of the German PV industry. All the process parameters of the cell line are strictly controlled and the cell line is located within a clean room. The complete inline process and the minimized handling and human interference allow high throughputs and product quality standardization. The result The cell manufacturing line employs silicon wafers and operates seamlessly resulting in high production rates of solar cells of average efficiency greater than 16%, one of the highest recorded efficiency rates in the industry. 8 SILCIO PRODUCTION FACILITIES PV module line Guaranteed quality in all stages Yearly Production Capacity: 19+ MW The solar cells are assembled into modules at the PV module line, which has been designed and installed by the leading German robot manufacturer Reis Robotics GmbH. The PV module line is highly automated and only employs high quality material and instrumentation. It utilizes multiple robots in order to handle delicate jobs, such as tabbing and stringing and precision laying on the glass and EVA. The cooperation of SILCIO with the specialized consulting company SunnySideUp GmbΗ ensures the attainment of the very high quality standards of the PV module line. Each module is individually characterized for output during its production and is quality controlled, while its serial number permits complete traceability of the manufacturing history and its components.
