Clean, Sustainable Energy from the Sun Now, and for Our Children s Future
An Industry Leader NovaSolar is an industry leader in manufacturing thin-film silicon based solar panels and constructing large scale PV power plants throughout the world. NovaSolar s main focus is to make solar energy cost competitive with fossil fuel generation of electricity (Grid parity) particularly daytime peak electricity. NovaSolar s team has developed breakthrough amorphous silicon (a-si) thin film technologies and our own production equipment. Commercialized low cost, high reliability a-si panels, and rethought solar farm balance of system (BOS) with innovative design and installation techniques. Altogether, we have achieved one of the lowest costs per kwh for utility scale applications.
Rather than focusing on Kilowatts, Our product is kilowatt-hours. Unlike other panel manufacturers and sellers, or other solar construction companies, we look at the entire solar value chain to understand, integrate and innovate, in order to deliver to our customers the lowest cost per kwh over the 25 years operation of a solar installation. Our Track Record NovaSolar s core technical team originated from the technical team that founded OptiSolar, who accomplished the fastest commercialization record in the industry with substantial mass production of less than 3 years after the company was first founded. It also achieved leading yield, uptime, cost and reliability results in thin-film silicon arena. That same process took some of our major competitors more than a decade. 100,000 Sqm Volume Manufacturing Facility with 130kW solar farm onsite (Sacramento, CA) During that three year period, the company achieved many important technological breakthroughs largely unknown to the industry, such as: Designed and commercialized one of the world s most advanced fully automated a-si thin film PV module production line. Commercialized industry s first and only SINGLE SHEET TEMPERED GLASS module. In a short period of time, against all our major competitors, we were selected over many larger and better known solar companies by utility companies like PG&E, Southern California Edison, Los Angeles Power, Phoenix Electric and governments like Ontario Power Authority for solar farm contract awards of 800MW.
Advanced Technology NovaSolar s thin film silicon solar modules are made with a single sheet of glass, several very, very thin layers of common materials (silicon, aluminum, zinc, etc) and then a thin polymer backcoat. In high volumes, the cost of the solar module will approach the cost of the materials. The cost of materials for NovaSolar s thin-film silicon solar modules is the lowest in the industry Our thin-film silicon solar modules also benefit from many other important advantages: Material Availability The materials in our solar modules are among the most abundant and low cost materials on earth. Reliability Silicon thin-films are more resistant to corrosion than some other thin film materials, such as Cadium Telluride (CdTe) or CIGS. Better Performance Up to 15% better kwh output per Watt installed compared to c-si and 5-10% better than other thin film technologies Improving Efficiency - Multi-junction thin-film silicon technology provide a solid path for significant efficiency improvement and cost reduction Most Green, sustainable, and responsible Most clean, safe, with zero toxicity, and lowest energy payback time (carbon footprint)
NovaSolar, inherits the benefits of over $340 million of investment by OptiSolar, and possesses the world s most advanced a-si thin film technology. We produce superior a-si thin film modules that have a unique and innovative construction and packaging that delivers industry leading reliability and cost advantages: SINGLE sheet of TEMPERED glass NO frame NO EVA lamination All aluminum to aluminum interconnects to resist corrosion Highly corrosion resistant hermetic seal on the back side of the glass and around its edges Strong and durable polymer back coat for mechanical and dielectric protection Normalized Module Power Effect of Humidity Freeze on Module Power, 95% Confidence Interval Number of modules tested at cycle interval Normalized Module Power Effect of Temperature Cycling on Module Power, 95% Confidence Interval Number of modules Sample Mean tested at time interval 1 Upper Confidence Level 0.9 Lower Confidence Level Sample Mean 0.6 Upper Confidence Level 0.5 Lower Confidence Level Effect of Damp Heat on Module Power, 95% Confidence Series4 Interval Number of modules 0.3 Number of Humidity Freeze Cycles tested at time interval Normalized Module Power 0.7 Number of Temperature Cycles 0.6 Sample mean 0.5 Upper Confidence Level Lower Confidence Level Hours in Damp Heat These unique constructs yield multiple benefits, in addition to the apparent advantage of lowering the cost of the module: Highest reliability Lightest weight Strong and durable, Ideal for multiple BIPV and parking lot applications, Reliability, Reliability, Reliability The big advantage of thin-film silicon solar panels is their low cost per watt and low cost per kwh. In accelerated testing at the independent testing lab at Arizona State University, in the three most critical tests, thermal cycling, humidity freeze and high temperature, high humidity, typical a-si solar panels show almost 5% power loss. NovaSolar solar panels show zero power loss!
Global Reach NovaSolar, located in Silicon Valley, California (R & D), Hong Kong (headquarters), and China (manufacturing facility), is within Global reach, is a fully vertically integrated turnkey technology solutions provider for large scale solar PV power generating systems. Globally, we are a one stop shop for the design and for all components and construction. Locally we have experiences in operating and installing solar farms for a few years, In addition, we have the capability in designing the operating and maintenance procedures specifically for each location, training the local operation teams and ultimately transferring the solar power plant operation to the local team.
Global Headquarter & Global Business Development center in HongKong. Global/Region Business Development Resource Over $150 M US project pipeline funding committed by strategic partners Strong relationships with customers in China, Thailand, Vietnam U.S. Saudi Arabia, Middle East, Europe with strong sales pipelines to sustain business growth Factory in Yangzhou, China Planned with four factories, each with 10 production lines providing over 1.1 GW of annualized capacity. Phase One will include 10 dual junction lines and the next 3 phases will each include 10 triple junction lines. Each phase utilizes 45,000m² of facility space. Timing: commission the first production line will be complete before the end of 2011 World Class R&D Our Silicon Valley based, cutting edge, R&D team consists of highly experienced and accomplished world class people and equipment. This is the team that created OptiSolar s breakthrough technology. They also have the record for achieving the shortest time from concept to commercial production of a high volume, a-si production facility. NovaSolar will continue to invest in R&D. Over the next five years, we plan to introduce two new generations of solar products. We will continuously improve our production equipment and our production processes to lower the cost per watt of our solar panels and improve their performance and reliability.
Vertical Integration NovaSolar was founded to be a total turnkey technology solution provider for utilities and solar farm developers. Our product is solar electricity at the lowest cost and with the highest reliability. To achieve this, we tackled the most critical bottle neck issues along the entire solar value chain. As a result, our capability is unique in the industry. Most industry players started from one particular part of the value chain. Then, they tried to integrate upstream or downstream to capture more margins. We are different. We started with a holistic view of how to achieve the cost and reliability that will lead to grid parity. It was necessary to innovate for cost, quality, and reliability along the entire value chain. This is what we have done and will continue to do. R&D Equipment Module EPCM PV Power O&M
Our Products and Services One Stop Shopping We carefully qualify, select and monitor the quality of every component in a solar installation. If something goes wrong, our customers call us. We will find the root cause and work with the supplier to make sure that problem is solved. This is a unique value proposition for our customers. Turnkey Build-Operate-Train and Transfer PV Solar Electricity Plants We provide the design of the solar installation and manage the construction. We hire local contractors, but we set the tasks and we train the workers. During the construction, our quality team is on-site and can identify teams that need to be re-trained. Typical Ground Mounted Installation Our typical ground mounted installation is in 1 MW blocks. With our usual installation team size, we install blocks at a rate of about 1 MW per week. Typical installation is in multiple 1 MW blocks Thin-film Silicon Solar Modules NovaSolar designs and manufactures its own proprietary & patented thin film PV solar modules We have selected multi-junction amorphous silicon (a-si) technology for our products. The science of thin film silicon is well developed and the materials are RoHs compliant (non-toxic) Module Manufacturing Equipment We have designed our own production equipment for cost and quality We can innovate and improve our product, not just copy Automation is essential for consistent, repeatable quality Contamination from human handling is a key cause of defects
Every hour, enough energy arrives on earth, To meet our energy demands for a whole year To meet our future energy needs and to do it in a clean sustainable fashion, people are looking towards the sun.
