4 Applied Languages Programme The Applied Languages Programme is year-long part-time study and consists of a two-hour class per week for 24 weeks. Certificate or Elective? The Applied Languages Programme can be studied as either an Elective, University Certificate, or Worldwise Certificate. Elective Current UCLan students, whose main degree programme allows it, can study the Applied Languages Programme as an elective. Your course leader or personal tutor will be able to advise whether you have this option for your course. The important thing to note with electives is that they do form part of your main programme of study and so the mark counts towards your main award just as your other modules do. You will not receive a separate certificate showing that you have studied a language but the mark for this module will appear on your official transcript for the appropriate year of study. An Applied Languages module is worth 20 credits. University Certificate A University Certificate is an assessed programme of study which is available to current UCLan students, UCLan staff and members of the public. This is the option for postgraduate or undergraduate students with a full profile or without the option of an elective on their course. The certificate is taken alongside your main programme of study. Taking a language this way means that it is kept separate from your main course and your mark does not affect the overall mark for your main programme. On successful completion of this course you will receive an official certificate from the University. The important thing to remember about taking a certificate is that you are in effect taking an extra module and so you should ensure that you have time to commit to this additional work. Worldwise Certificate This option is available to members of the public and members of staff who wish to attend a class without assessment. The course does not differ from the University Certificate, but you won t be able to sit the exams or have any work corrected by the tutor outside of the classroom. There is no difference between the content of the course undertaken as an elective or certificate. Admission Criteria The class you join will depend on the qualifications / experience you have. Our beginners classes are for those who have no prior knowledge of the target language. You will not be permitted to study at beginners level if you already have a qualification in the target language. Take a look at the Language Levels section (below) which will help you choose the best level for you. If you are unsure, don t worry! During the first teaching weeks you will have the opportunity to seek advice from the tutor as to the most appropriate level for you. IELTS 6.5 or equivalent is required for non-native speakers of English. Language Levels Languages are available in up to 5 different levels. The following information should help you identify which level to enrol on: 3

5 Beginners: This normally implies no previous knowledge in the language and the lecturer will accordingly start from the beginning. If you were awarded a grade of D or below at GCSE, you may be accepted onto this level. If you last studied the language prior to 2010 you may also be entitled to join. On successful completion of this level you should be able to interact in the target language through oral and written communicative tasks which require a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar topics; respond to and use simple sentences and common idiomatic expressions related to relevant topics in communication and culture (e.g. basic personal/family information, descriptions of people/places, food, customs, etc.); and demonstrate an understanding of aspects of the culture of the country or countries where the language is spoken. The Learning Outcomes of this course are in accordance with the Council of Europe Level A2. Intermediate: This level is designed for students who can demonstrate a general basic understanding of the chosen language. A GCSE at grade "C" or above (or equivalent qualification) in the chosen language will normally be required. If you have successfully completed our Beginners module in your chosen language you may be able to proceed to Intermediate level, subject to satisfactory performance. The course is designed to develop and reinforce the basic skills of understanding, speaking, reading and writing. It introduces students to the written and spoken language associated with general topics of interest, social and professional interaction. The syllabus will be supported by the coverage of appropriate grammatical structures. The Learning Outcomes of this course are in accordance with the Council of Europe Level B1 / B1+. Advanced: This level is designed for students who have successfully completed the intermediate module or have passed an A level (or equivalent qualification) in the target language. On successful completion students should be able to: recognise the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics; interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party; produce clear, detailed text and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options. The Learning Outcomes of this course are in accordance with the Council of Europe Level B2 / B2+. Advanced + 1: This level is designed for students who have successfully completed the Advanced module or its equivalent. On successful completion students should be able to: recognise a wide range of demanding, longer texts, and recognise implicit meaning; express him/herself fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions; use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes; and produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects, showing controlled use of organisational patterns, connectors and cohesive devices. The Learning Outcomes of this course are in accordance with the Council of Europe Level B2+ / C1. Advanced + 2: This level is designed for students who have successfully completed the Advanced + 1 module or its equivalent. On successful completion students should be able to: recognise with ease virtually everything heard or read and summarise information from different spoken and written sources, reconstruct arguments and accounts in a coherent presentation; and express themselves spontaneously, very fluently and precisely, differentiating finer shades of meaning even in more complex situations. The Learning Outcomes of this course are in accordance with the Council of Europe Level C1 / C2. 4

6 Assessment You will produce a personal portfolio of language work over the course of the academic year. This consists of a Needs Analysis identifying areas you wish to improve, a series of tasks based on this Needs Analysis which address the areas identified (e.g. if you want to improve your writing skills you might undertake a short essay or report as one of your tasks) and finally a critical analysis of what you have learned while carrying out the tasks. You will also undertake semester-end tests assessing your receptive, productive and interactive language skills. Fees Electives If you are an undergraduate student studying a language as an elective, this is counted as part of your course. The elective is included in the fee you pay to the University for 2016/17; therefore, there is NO additional payment. University Certificate Full-time students taking a University Certificate If you are a full-time student you are allowed to take one University Certificate for free in an academic year in addition to your full-time programme.
