1 HIT Fundamentals of Disease Process 4 Credit Hours Course Description: This course is an introduction to disease processes in the human body with emphasis on the etiology, signs, symptoms, diagnostic aids and findings, and treatment, including medications. Course Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course, students will: Determine disease processes according to predisposing factors, pathology, and etiology. Determine diagnostic, therapeutic procedures, and medications for the disease process they indicate. Determine for each major condition discussed under each organ system the following: Normal structure and function Pathogenesis and etiology Signs and symptoms Common diagnostic tests General treatment Outcomes of diseases Identify drug classification with mechanism of actions, main therapeutic effects and potential adverse reactions Prerequisites and Corequisites: Admission to the HIT program or permission of instructor and BIOL Course Topics:

Testing Procedures: There are 14 module tests consisting of 50 matching and multiple choice questions. There is a mid-term and final exam. The midterm exam is not proctored. The final exam is proctored. Grading Procedures: 1. Test and exams are automatically graded by the computer. You must also have a cover page and a bibliography page--which do not count toward the 3 pages of the actual disease report. The paper is to be your own words. Do not copy and paste, as

Final Exam Take the final exam Pharmacology chapters 14, 11, 12, 10, 8, 7, 13, 18, 19, 24, 25 Diseases Chapters 11 through 17 As the semester progresses, you may use the Discussion area to post questions regarding assignments or chat with other students. If the instructor is not available, another student might be able to assist in answering questions. It provides a method for meeting other students in the class. The instructor may post announcements in the discussion thread topic from the instructor. The Discussion area is also used for discussion questions for the course. Late Policy:

9 All assignments must be completed before or by the due date. If you cannot complete an assignment by the due date for any reason, you must let the instructor know. The instructor will make the determination if the assignment can be made up. Plagiarism, cheating, and other forms of academic dishonesty are prohibited. Students guilty of academic misconduct, either directly or indirectly through participation or assistance, are subject to disciplinary action through the regular procedures of the student s home institution.

10 In addition to other possible disciplinary sanctions that may be imposed, the instructor has the authority to assign an "F" or zero for an activity or to assign an "F" for the course. Observe course netiquette at all times. Guidelines for Communications: Discussions: Always include a subject line. Remember without facial expressions some comments may be taken the wrong way. Be careful in wording your s. Use of emoticons might be helpful in some cases. Use standard fonts. Do not send large attachments without permission. Special formatting such as centering, audio messages, tables, html, etc. should be avoided unless necessary to complete an assignment or other communication. Respect the privacy of other class members Review the discussion threads thoroughly before entering the discussion. Be a lurker then a discussant. Try to maintain threads by using the "Reply" button rather starting a new topic. Do not make insulting or inflammatory statements to other members of the discussion group. Be respectful of other s ideas. Be patient and read the comments of other group members thoroughly before entering your remarks. Be cooperative with group leaders in completing assigned tasks. Be positive and constructive in group discussions. Respond in a thoughtful and timely manner.
