Lewis is one of many schools sponsored by the De La Salle Christian Brothers, an international Roman Catholic teaching order with 325 years of teaching in the Lasallian tradition. Experienced Faculty Lewis has nearly 174 full-time faculty members who take their students personal and professional success to heart. The majority hold terminal degrees in their fields. Many are experienced practitioners. The student/faculty ratio is 12:1. Accreditation Lewis University is accredited by The Higher Learning Commission and a member of the North Central Association. The College of Nursing and Health Professions basic professional program is approved by the State of Illinois Department of Professional Regulation, and all programs, graduate and undergraduate, are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (One Dupont Circle, Washington DC, 20036). All teacher education programs are approved for entitlement by the Illinois State Board of Education in conjunction with the Illinois State Teacher Certification Board. Lewis campuses are also located in Oak Brook, Hickory Hills, Tinley Park and Shorewood. Additionally, classes are now offered at De La Salle Institute in Chicago. All classes are easily accessible to Chicago and the suburbs, making it easy for students to complete professional internships. Enrollment Lewis currently has almost 5,400 students; over 3,900 undergraduates and 1,500 graduate students. Many are from the Chicago region with international students representing 30 different countries. Lewis welcomes students of all cultures and religious faiths, with a 30 percent minority population.

These programs can be beneficial in providing you a competitive edge for advancement in the field of criminal justice or public safety. Our graduate degree programs are balanced between the practical as well as theoretical knowledge of the discipline. Our faculty has rich backgrounds in criminal justice, public safety and extensive academic preparation. This blend of expertise has served as an enabler for working adults to better comprehend the academic challenges associated with degree completion requirements. Both of the master's degree programs in Criminal Social Justice and Public Safety Administration are offered either during the day or evenings to accommodate working adult students. In addition, the program in Public Safety Administration is offered in an accelerated format that can enhance the pace for degree completion. The course offerings for both degree programs are conveniently located in several areas in Chicago and the suburbs for easy student access. 4 GENERAL INFORMATION ACADEMIC STANDINGS A minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 must be maintained in order for a student to remain in good standing. STUDENT-AT-LARGE Any student who has applied for admission, but who has not yet completed the admission process or requirements, may register as a student-at-large. This requires the submission of the graduate application and fee and official transcripts. No more than nine (9) semester credit hours taken as a student-at-large may be applied toward the degree. Enrollment as a student-atlarge does not guarantee admission to the program, but does allow the student an opportunity to demonstrate the ability to perform successfully at the graduate level. Students must meet all admission requirements by the last day of the semester of enrollment in their third course as a student-at-large or discontinue matriculation. TIME LIMIT FOR COMPLETION Students must meet all requirements for the degree within a period of seven consecutive years from the time of first enrollment in graduate coursework or upon admission to the program, whichever comes first. TUITION AND FEES Published regularly by the Offices of the Bursar and Registrar, current tuition and fees can be found in the University Course Schedule. FINANCIAL AID The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is available. If you wish to apply for financial assistance for graduate study, you need to complete the FAFSA form. 5 MASTER OF SCIENCE IN CRIMINAL /SOCIAL JUSTICE OVERVIEW Lewis University s Criminal/Social Justice Program is one of the most highly respected and well established programs in the Chicagoland area. We have prepared thousands of men and women to serve in the court system, city and suburban police departments, federal, state, and county criminal justice agencies, as well as corporate and private security agencies. Some well known alumni include the recently retired Superintendent of the Chicago Police Department who received both an undergraduate and graduate degree from Lewis University; and the Washington D.C. Chief of Police. The Master of Science in Criminal/Social Justice meets the needs of private and public agencies to have generalists assume middle management positions. The Master of Science in Criminal/Social Justice meets these needs by providing an interdisciplinary program which emphasizes broad-based knowledge rather than a narrow focus of expertise. The program offers coursework in the fields of law enforcement administration, management, corrections, labor relations and social services. The program prepares students for positions in fields such as criminal justice, mental health, environmental and consumer protection, children and family services, delinquency, courts and probation, and private security. This program is characterized by: A curriculum that offers both theory and practical application. Faculty that bring formal education and experience into the classroom. Coursework relevant to today s issues facing the criminal justice field. ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS I. Full and Provisional Admission students must: Possess a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education with a major in Criminal/Social Justice or with 12 semester hours of credit related to Criminal/Social Justice or be currently serving as a criminal justice practitioner in possession of a bachelor's degree or if the bachelor's degree is not criminal/social justice related, successfully complete two criminal/social justice graduate courses, selected by the program director prior to admission as a degree candidate; Submit two letters of recommendation; Submit a completed application; Pay a non-refundable application fee submitted with application; Submit official academic transcripts from each institution attended; and Obtain acceptance by the Graduate Council. II. Full Admission Status students must have an undergraduate GPA of 3.00 or higher on a 4.00 scale, calculated on the most recent 60 semester hours. III. Provisional Admission Status students must have an undergraduate GPA of 2.00 or higher on a 4.00 scale. Upon satisfactory completion of a maximum of 9-semester hours credit which must be completed with a GPA of 3.00 or higher, the applicant will be reviewed for full admission status by the Chairman and Director of the Graduate Program for consideration to "Full Admission" status. IV. A maximum of 12 graduate semester credit hours directly related to the program's course content may be transferred provided the grade for each course is no less than a "B." V. A maximum of six semester credit hours are allowed during the candidate's first semester which must be completed with a GPA of 3.00 or higher. 3

6 DEGREE REQUIREMENTS Candidates for the Master of Science in Criminal/Social Justice degree are required to complete a program of study determined in consultation with, and under the direction of the department coordinator or a faculty member. The program must be approved by the Program Director. The program of study will total no less than 39 semester credit hours. Each candidate is required to complete 18 semester credit hours in core course work. STUDENT COURSE LOAD Nine semester credit hours per semester is considered a full-time course load. An overload may be permitted with the consent of the Program Director for students who have maintained a cumulative GPA of TIME LIMITS FOR COMPLETION OF THE PROGRAM Students may take no less than 18 months nor more than seven years to complete the program. STUDENT COUNSELING Graduate faculty offices are located on the first floor of McNamara Hall at the University's Romeoville campus. Students should consult with their departmental advisor at regular intervals during their course of studies. PROBATION Students will be placed on academic probation should their cumulative GPA for a semester (including summer sessions) fall below Students who do not improve their GPA during the following semester will be subject to dismissal from the program by the Program Director. GRADUATION AND DEGREE AWARD To be awarded the degree, the student must: Earn a minimum cumulative GPA of Complete 39 semester credit hours which may include no more than 6 credit hours maximum of Research and Thesis, and 3 credit hours of Independent Study, respectively. Must complete the six required core courses, totaling 18 semester hours. Make timely application for graduation to the Registrar's office and payment of all financial obligations to the university. INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS All international students are required to present the appropriate student visa and other documents. Students educated outside of the United States must meet the University's Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) requirements, in addition to the regular Criminal/Social Justice program admission requirements. RESEARCH AND THESIS A thesis and/or research is not required for graduation. Students who have completed 27 semester credit hours and maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher may elect to do Research and Thesis (81-596) for a maximum of six hours. Qualified students who elect to do Research and Thesis, will apply to the Program Director for consent to register and the assignment of a thesis advisor. The student will prepare a research proposal in consultation with the thesis advisor and Program Director. Upon acceptance of the proposal, the student must complete the research and thesis within 2 calendar years. Proposal forms for Research and Thesis are available from the Program Director. The thesis will conform to the standards set forth by the American Psychological Association. Upon acceptance of the thesis, the student must deliver two complete, bound copies to their Program Director prior to the end of the semester. Upon acceptance of the complete thesis, it will be delivered to the University Librarian for placing in the library collection. LOCATION OF COURSES AND CLASS SCHEDULES Graduate Criminal/Social Justice courses are held at Lewis suburban campuses, as well as additional locations in the Chicago area. Fall and Spring semester classes meet for 2 1/2 hours one day a week. Summer classes meet twice a week for 3 1/2 hours each class session. 4

8 MASTER OF SCIENCE IN PUBLIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION OVERVIEW The Master of Science in Public Safety Administration provides a concise, accelerated, and contemporary course of study that is unique, flexible and relevant to the changing needs of today's public safety practitioner. It is designed to help those who are preparing to manage police, fire, emergency medical, and private law enforcement service in our society. This program is characterized by: A curriculum that offers both theory and practical application. Faculty that bring formal education and experienced. Accelerated coursework that allows flexibility in scheduling. Courses are offered in an accelerated format on a year round basis and scheduled to accommodate both students who wish to enroll continuously and those who stop and re-enroll later. Courses are eight weeks in length with six sessions per year and are offered with morning, afternoon, and evening opportunities. Individual class meetings are once a week for 4 hours. ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS I. Full and Provisional Admission students must: Possess a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education with a major in Criminal/Social Justice, Fire Science, or Private Security; or possess a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education in another major with a concentration of 12 semester credit hours related to Criminal/Social Justice, Fire Science, or Private Security; or possess a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education and be currently serving as a Criminal/Social Justice, Fire Service, or Private Security practitioner with a minimum of five years experience. Submit two letters of recommendation. Submit academic transcripts from each institution attended. Pay a non-refundable application fee, submitted with a completed graduate application. Be accepted by the Graduate Council of the College of Arts and Sciences. II. Full admission students must have an undergraduate GPA of 3.00 or higher on a 4.00 scale. III. Provisional admission students must have an undergraduate GPA of 2.00 or higher on a 4.00 scale. At the conclusion of the coursework, the student must successfully pass a Comprehensive Program Examination. I. COMPREHENSIVE PROGRAM EXAMINATION A comprehensive program examination will be required. The examination is established to affirm understanding by the student and to confirm to the Department and the University that learning has occurred. The comprehensive examination is also an indicator that the course content is reflective of current practices. The form of the examination will utilize written or oral presentations or defenses as directed by the chairperson. STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES There are a number of learning outcomes associated with the Public Safety Administration degree program. It is the design of the program, and the intention of the University that a graduate student of Public Safety Administration will: Understand the contemporary practices of public safety management and responsibilities. Prepare budgets for a public safety organization. Demonstrate organizational development leadership through the practices of reflection on action, critical and spatial thinking, and analysis and interpretation of data and logic. Develop and maintain organizational effectiveness through the knowledge and employment of select training modalities. Maintain organizational and personal values that are ethical and socially responsible. Understand law that applies to the field. Articulate issues of employee relationships with the public safety organization. Develop theories and practices involving issues of risk management and crisis management. Demonstrate sound practice in human resource development. Make decisions consistent with the responsibilities of serving and relating to the community. Organize ideas in such a manner that communication is optimized within the organization. Work effectively in a multicultural organization and community. Evaluate the impact of costs, assets, losses, and politics. Analyze qualitative and quantitative data. Develop solutions for public safety problems. 8
