FAQ: 2016 Kamloops Kids of Steel Triathlon When is race package pick-up? What can I expect? Race Package Pick-Up is at Brock Pool (2470 Fleetwood Ave) Saturday, May 14 from 4-5pm. Hand in your completed athlete profile. A copy of the Athlete Profile is attached to this FAQ and available online at This information is used by the announcer on race day. Please complete prior to race package pick up. Pick up your race package (includes your number, t-shirt and other race info) Find out when your heat time/swim time is. There are a number of swim heats depending on age group. Ask questions of one of our wonderful volunteers/race Director Review a larger map of the race course, have a chance to drive/ride the race course in person If you cannot make package pick-up on Saturday, your package will be available for pick-up at Body Marking and Athlete Check-In on race morning. To avoid long line-ups, we STRONGLY recommend that you don't leave package pick-up until race morning unless you are from out of town. When is the Pre-Race Meeting? This year there is NO pre-race meeting on Saturday. This FAQ is covering all of the information that we would normally cover at the pre-race meeting. You can also us at koskamloops@gmail.com if we missed something. There will be a pre-race briefing on race morning before race start. Please review the race maps with your child for their age group before the race! Course maps can be found at and clicking on Kids of Steel Important Race Information. There is no mandatory bike check. Parents are responsible to make sure that all gear is safe and in working condition. When do we need to be at the race site? Schedule of Events: Sunday, May 15th Brock Pool (2470 Fleetwood Avenue) 6-7 am Spring Sprint and KOS Athlete Check-In, Body Marking and Transition Open 6:50 am Pre-race meeting 7 am Spring Sprint Race Start 9 am Last Spring Sprint swim wave exists pool (approx. time) 9 am Booster Juice (complimentary for racers) + Lions Breakfast (for purchase) 6-8:30 am KOS Transition, Athlete Check-In and Body Marking Open 8:30 am KOS Transitions Closes 9:00 am KOS Pre-race Warm-up 9:15 am BCSG Qualifying Race Start (14-15 year olds) (approx. time) 9:45 am 5/6/7 year old Swim Start (approx time) 10:30 am Face Painting + Family Fun Zone Opens! 10:45 am 8/9 year old Swim Start 11:45 am Last Swim Heat Start 12:30 pm Transitions Open (Adults and Kids) 1 pm Awards + Ice Cream! The above times apply to all athletes regardless of wave start time. I understand that it can be difficult to arrive by 8am and not race until 11am (in some cases). My own children are in the same boat! Please pack extra snacks and hydration and encourage your child to cheer on other competitors until 30 minutes before their swim wave start time. We will also have lots of fun things for your child to do before and after their race! When will my child start? Swim waves will be available at package pick-up on Saturday and posted at Athlete Check-In on race day. Waves will be based on the number of competitors in your child s age group. Children 5-7 will start first and we will allow these young competitors to finish before starting the swim waves for children aged 8 and older.
When and where does my child go for their swim wave start? Listen for the marshalling announcement for your age group. The race announcer will call wave starts to the pool area. The first waves will proceed to the pool deck immediately following the pre-race briefing and athlete warm-up at the start/finish line. We will allow extra time for these competitors to arrive at check-in. Expect to be called onto the pool deck 30 minutes before your heat. Follow the direction of the swim marshal. Cheer on all competitors while you wait to race. Pfd's (lifejackets) or kick boards may be used. Kick boards will be provided at the pool. No flippers or fins. ALWAYS WALK on the pool deck. Where should I park? There will NO PARKING IN THE PARKING LOT street parking will be on a first come, first served basis. Do not park anywhere on the race route including: Edgemount, Briarwood, Rosewood, Parkcrest, Fleetwood, Moray, Ayr, Perth, Argyle, Greenfield, Young, Crestline, Schreiner, Joyce and Tranquille (west of Schreiner). There is a DROP OFF zone by the playground on Schreiner Street. You can drive in, drop off your child and/or their gear, then find a place to park. Volunteers will be on-site to watch over gear. We encourage all athletes to use this entrance as body marking and athlete check-in are located adjacent to the playground and drop-off area.
Is there food? For the first year, we will have food for purchase on-site! The Lions will be serving breakfast and coffee starting in the morning and continuing throughout the day! This is good news for those of us that need caffeine for the long race day! Booster Juice will also be handing out snack-size smoothies to all KOS and Spring Sprint participants. Sorry spectators, these are for athletes only! Plus, as always, KOS participants will get ice cream at the end of the race! How can my child find help if needed? Most volunteers will be wearing reflective safety vests and/or some may be wearing volunteer shirts on race day. If you need help, ask a volunteer. I am volunteering, how can I also see my child compete? Before I became Race Director, I too was a parent volunteer trying to balance volunteering for the event and helping my kids get ready and watching them race. I know it s tough but we do our best to accommodate volunteer opportunities that allow you to see at least a portion of your child s race. Remember that most of the volunteers are in the same boat! We NEED parent volunteers in order to put on a safe and fun race for your child. If you have a volunteer preference, let us know by ing koskamloops@gmail.com. Volunteer roles include: Course set-up (Sat afternoon) and take-down (Sun afternoon) Race package pick-up (Sat afternoon/early Sun) Registration and Body Marking (early Sun) Bike course counters and marshalling Transition support Pool counters Water table/food Service Timers/finish line Runners Administration Where can I find the route maps? If you registered more than one child in your family, please make sure to look at the correct maps for each child. Maps are available at What age category does my child fit into? The age of your child is their age as of December 31 of the current year (if your child is 9 but turns 10 before December 31, then you should look at the 10 year old maps). Where does the race bib, bike sticker and ribbon go? Race Bibs- these are VERY important for counting laps- so they must be visible from the front! Bike number (sticker) on the seat post or handle bars Coloured ribbon visible on the front of the bike! These help lap counters. Athlete Check-In, Body Marking & Late Package Pick-Up Athlete check-in and body marking is open from 6:00am 8:30am. Youth athletes can check-in early if arriving with their parents for the Spring Sprint adult race happening early in the morning. KOS athlete check-in will continue past when the Spring Sprint starts at 7am, closing at 8:30am. Please arrive early (8 am at the latest) to check in and get body marked. There will be line-ups, so don t leave it to the last minute! For safety reasons, all competitors will be marked with permanent ink with their race number.
If you are from out of town or were otherwise unable to pick-up your race package on Saturday, race packages will be available at the Athlete Check-In/Body Marking table. What should we know about Transition? Transition means changing from one activity to another, or in triathlon, the area where the athletes change from swimming to biking and then again from biking to running. There will be 2 distinct transition areas this year: one for the kids 5-7 (closest to the pool in the fenced area) and the other kids 8 & older. Only athletes and race volunteers are allowed in the transition area. We have a great bunch of volunteers that will help the littlest of athletes dry off, get their helmet on, do up shoes, and attend to all their race needs! We encourage parents and friends to cheer on athletes from the transition perimeter and along the course routes. Only athletes will be allowed to retrieve their belongings from transition. Re-entry will be allowed upon completion of the race. We want to ensure the safety of all athletes and the security of their bikes and gear. Be aware of the entrance and exits from transition- called the chutes. Before your race begins, make sure you familiarize yourself with the swim entrance chute (from pool to transition), the bike exit chute (from transition out onto the bike course), the bike entrance chute (coming back into transition from the bike course) and the run exit chute (leaving transition for the last time and heading out onto the run course). Remember where your bike and gear are. After setting up your equipment in transition and before leaving for the swim marshalling area, make a mental note of where your bike is. Is it in the middle of transition? Is it beside the big tree? Is it near the water station? Perhaps you can place your favorite towel over your bike. This will help you quickly find your way to your bike when you are running in to transition after your swim. A water station will be located in transition. Make sure you drink lots! What should my child know about the Bike Course? Ideally you should review road rules and basic bike skills (e.g. signs, signaling, stopping, cornering, riding in a straight line, and riding with other people/passing) with your child(ren) before the race. If you drove/rode the bike course before the race (race package pick-up provides and excellent opportunity for this!), that would be ideal! Remember the course is not closed to vehicle traffic. Keep right, stay inside the traffic cones and obey all traffic marshals. Slow down for corners, hazards (i.e. bumps, crossings) and turn-a-rounds. There will be traffic marshals reminding you to slow down in the counting zone on Crestline. Make sure to obey traffic marshal's directions to slow down. Make sure you know how many laps you have to cycle. Training wheels can be used
Parents may accompany children in the 5 yr old and 6-7 yr old age groups if necessary. Parents who accompany their children can join them as they exit from transition. (grassy area behind pool near Parkcrest) Keep your head up, eyes open and be safe! What should my child know about the Run Course & Finish Area? Follow route marshals directions at all times. Familiarize yourself with your age specific route(s). Make sure you know how many laps you have to run Wear your bibs in the front. Clear the finish area after completing your race to help the timers do their job. Water is provided on the run and bike course as well as in the transition and finish area. Have fun and be sure to give the other participants lots of space. Remember that EVERY finisher is a winner!!! What equipment do I need to remember on race day? a bike (either road or mountain bike) a helmet running shoes swim suit or shorts goggles (if desired) T-shirt/shorts a SMILE and a DESIRE TO HAVE FUN What clothing should my child wear? The choice of clothing will depend on the individual. Athletes often pull on a t-shirt and shorts over their bathing suit following the swim, rather than change completely. Singlets can be worn during competition. No change rooms are available in transition. No bare torsos are allowed, boys should have a t-shirt to put on following the swim. A hat and sun-bloc are important for protection from the sun during the run. On very hot and humid days, it is important that a child is not over-dressed so that they can sweat efficiently and not overheat.
