2 Population: 4, 667, 410 (2006 est.) Currency: Norwegian Krone Calling Code: +47 The Government of Norway has increasingly worked towards internationalizing the education system in the country. It is because of this that universities and colleges are working towards creating conducive atmosphere for international students who come to the country for higher studies. An estimated students from different countries are pursuing higher education in different Norwegian institutions of higher education. There are various undergraduate and graduate degree programmes available in the country. Norway is an ideal destination for higher education. The courses offered have high quality and an improved flexibility. Courses available range from vocational to postgraduate and doctoral studies. The universities and colleges in the country have an informal approach when compared to educational institutions from around the world. Teachers at the higher educational institutions are more approachable and tuitions are also available. Most institutions present in the country have computer facilities and free Internet accessuniversities in the country carry out cutting edge research in various fields, besides providing academic opportunities. In fact, the emphasis is on research-based education. Also, Norwegian universities do not charge any tuition fees. However, special programs and private and specialized schools do have fees Also, Norway provides a breathtaking sight. Studies can be combined with thrilling outdoor adventures. 2 / 8
3 Aurora Borealis, the midnight sun, fjords, and the mountains provide a beautiful sight. Students can also enjoy skiing, water rafting, and climbing or simply sit back and enjoy the fresh air. Thus, the students can not only pursue quality higher education but also enjoy unique natural experiences. In order to aid the students who are planning to study in Norway, here are some links, which are mentioned below. These links will help a student understand Norway better and also know more about the colleges and universities in Norway. There are plenty of opportunities available for students who are pursuing higher studies in the country. NORWAY: EDUCATION, WHETHER & STAY IN NORWAY CLIMATIC CONDITIONS IN NORWAY The Gulf Stream has influenced the country s climate to a great extent. Although the country has a northerly position, it has a mild climate. Along the coat, the climate is fairly temperate. The inland climate is more severe. Sub arctic conditions are found towards the north of the country. The important agricultural areas receive an annual rainfall between 500 and 1000 mm. Rainfall mostly happens in July and August. Climatic conditions in Norway differ widely from the rest of Scandinavia. High mountain ranges protect the inland eastern areas from precipitation. Some of these areas have an annual rainfall of 300 mm. EDUCATION SCENARIO IN NORWAY Both public and private institutions in the country provide higher education. Higher education starts after three years of secondary education. The government in the country has initiated a major national education reform, with the objective of improving the education system in the 3 / 8
4 country. The aim is also to strengthen the basic competencies of students in the country. Higher education in the country is immediately after the secondary school and can be broadly classified into Universities, University Colleges, and private schools. The universities have their main focus on theoretical subjects (arts, humanities, natural science, music etc). The universities provide bachelor s degree, master s degree and doctoral degrees. There are a number of professional courses as well like law, medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, and psychology. However, these courses are run separately and have little to do with the universities. The university colleges present in the country provide bachelor s degrees besides, engineering degrees and professional education like teaching and nursing. Private Institutions present in the country have specialization in subjects like business economics, marketing, and MBA. Public education in the country up to the university level is free as there are no tuition fees charged. The educational policy in the country follows the principle of equal rights. The emphasis is on education to all members of the society irrespective of their social and cultural backgrounds. In fact, the educational institutions in the country are required to promote social mobility and facilitate wealth creation and welfare of all. ADMISSION SEASON IN NORWAY The application deadline in the country for foreign students is from January 15 to March 15 for the courses beginning the following August. Some institutions can have different pre-qualification deadlines. Generally, the academic year begins in August and runs for months. LIST OF MAJOR COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES Name & Address 1.
