What is Socrative 2.0? Socrative is a smart student response system that empowers teachers by engaging their classrooms with a series of educational exercises and games. This interactive app is super simple and takes only seconds to login. Socrative runs on tablets, smartphones, and laptops. Teachers login through their device and select an activity which controls the flow of questions and games. Students simply login with their device and interact in real time with the content. Student responses are visually represented for multiple choice, true/false and short answer questions. For pre-planned activities a teacher can view reports online as a google spreadsheet or as an ed Excel file. In July of 2014, Socrative 1.0 was replaced by 2.0 with a more pleasing graphic interface for and a couple of new features. If you were already using version 1.0, your content will be copied over to a 2.0 account and your login will stay the same. Socrative ipad vs. Desktop Socrative is a web-based program that can be used from any device with an Internet connection. From a teacher s perspective, it is helpful to create your Socrative quizzes/activities using a desktop computer (mostly because of ease of typing). That being said, you can run a Socrative quiz from either a desktop computer/media cart or from your ipad displayed on the pull-down screen / SMART Board via the Air Server. It is helpful to download the free Socrative app on your ipad nonetheless so that you can have the option of running a quiz from the ipad. Page 3
Connecting to the teacher's Socrative room Students only need to go to the Socrative website (either via a computer or an ipad) and enter the teacher s room number. They do NOT create a Socrative account. If you have an ipad with the Socrative app installed, open the app and enter the following room number: madameblack. Click Join room. If you are using a computer, go to click on Student Log In and enter the following room number: madameblack. Click Join room. Let s take a quiz together to learn about the student experience! Downloading the Socrative App on your ipad a) Open the App Store and enter the word Socrative into the search bar. b) Click on the free icon to download the app. c) Unfortunately, when Socrative downloads on the student ipads, it is called Student instead of Socrative. By the same token, the teacher s app is called Teacher not Socrative, which can be confusing. Since you cannot change the name of an app, I recommend downloading both the student and teacher version and putting them in a folder labeled Socrative Page 4
Creating your Teacher Socrative account a) Go to b) Click on the Teacher Sign Up button. c) Enter your address. d) Enter a password. e) Click the box indicating you agree to their terms of service. f) Click on the Submit button. Page 5
How to login as a teacher a) Go to using a computer (or start the Socrative app from your ipad). b) Enter your username ( ) and password. c) Click on the Login button. d) Notice that the top part of the Socrative teacher screen displays a Room Number and the number of students in the room. e) The room is identified by an automatically-generated 6-digit number. This number is unique to you and will be used every time a student logs in to Socrative during your class. f) You can change the room number to something easier to remember (alpha or numeric or a combination thereof) in the My Profile section (more information on this later). g) Students, on the other hand, do not have to login to Socrative. They simply open the app and then type in the teacher s room number. Page 6
Dashboard The Dashboard is divided into several sections: a) A blue bar across the top with : a. The name of the program: Socrative b. The number of students current in your room c. The room name/number d. A menu button along the right margin b) A black bar indicating where in the program you are currently ( dashboard ) and what activity if any you are doing ( no activity ) c) An inner square of green and blue buttons: d) Start a Quiz e) Quick Question f) Space Race g) Exit Ticket h) Manage Quizzes Page 7
Creating a spontaneous activity ( Quick Question ) in real time This screen allows you to ask SPONTANEOUS questions to the students as they key in their answers. You have the choice of the following types of questions: a) Multiple Choice b) True / False c) Short Answer d) When you use this option, you as the teacher will have to read the question and possible answers. For True / False questions, this is very effective since students know the choices ahead of time. For multiple choice questions, this can be a bit more challenging as the students must remember the choices to figure out their answers. e) Spontaneous questions are an excellent way of closing out the class, especially if you find there are a few unused minutes at the end. The teacher must make up the questions on the spot, but the activity is quickly set up and very flexible. Page 8
f) Above is what students see when you select a multiple choice question. Read the question and answers. Students will key in their answers. (Notice that Socrative keeps track of the number of students who have answered the question and will tally their collective responses.) Click Finish to close the spontaneously activity or click on one of the three question buttons to ask another question. Page 9
Creating a new quiz activity This screen allows you to create, edit, import & delete quizzes. a) Notice that your room name/number is always displayed at the top. The Manage Quizzes screen is divided into the following sections: a. Create Quiz b. Import Quiz c. My Quizzes (where the quizzes you have already created are stored) d. Reports b) Click on Create a Quiz. c) Enter a logical name for the quiz. (Note: proper naming of quizzes is essential so that you can use and edit quizzes from year to year. Simply naming a quiz as Quiz 1 does not help you identify the content of the Page 10
quiz, nor the class to which it is given. Since most teachers teach more than one level, I recommend that you use the following naming convention: a. Class Unit # - Unit topic - Quiz topic b. For example: FR2 Unit 4 House Furniture quiz c. Socrative allows you to share your quizzes with the Socrative community. The default value of this field is Shared along with an SOC# (which identifies the quiz). If you don t which to share the quiz, click the Shared box to change it to Not Shared. d. Consider how many questions the quiz will contain (you do not have to tell Socrative how many questions ahead of time). If this will be a warm-up or closure, the quiz should be no more than 10 questions (not including the What is your name question the first question of every quiz used to identify each student). If you are using this as an actual quiz, you can add as many questions as necessary. Page 11
e. Determine the type of question you will ask for the first question: multiple choice (includes true/false) or short answer. Click on the one you want. f. Enter the question and the multiple choice answers (at least two). (Note that you can add or delete the number of possible answers by clicking the +Add or -Delete buttons. g. Click the box next to the correct answer. (Note that you can designate more than one correct answer.) h. (Optional) if you wish to explain to students why an answer is correct, enter this information where it says Explanation. i. You can add an image to the question by clicking on the Add image button. Browse to the picture location. Click on it and Page 12
Socrative will add it to the question centered on the screen. The image must be less than 2MB and in a standard image format such as.jpeg. To remove the image, click on the Remove the image link.) j. Repeat step F for every question you wish to create. Click on Save & Exit to save the quiz or add a different type of question. k. Short Answer Questions i. In multiple choice questions, the answers are predetermined and there is ONE correct answer, making it very simple for the Socrative to grade students quizzes. ii. While short answer questions are possible, they require a great deal of clarity in order for them to be effective with students. iii. When creating a short answer question, you must make sure that you ask the question very clearly so as to guide the student towards the correct answer. iv. Correct spelling is a must in order for an answer to be marked correct. v. For instance, if your short answer question was: What fruit is the symbol of New York State? and the answer is Apple, students must be told not to put an article in front of the answer (as an apple, the apple, apples will be marked incorrect). vi. In order for the student to get the correct answer, it must match EXACTLY what the teacher entered. vii. For these reasons, the teacher must explain (and possibly model) how to answer these questions for the purposes of such quizzes. d) Once you save this quiz, it will appear in My quizzes and can be edited. Page 13
Running a pre-made quiz a) Once you have created a quiz, you can run it by clicking on Start Quiz. b) Notice that this screen has two tabs: a. Recent quizzes you created or run. b. All quizzes c) Choose the quiz you wish to run from the list. A button will appear that is labeled Start. (Note: you will ONLY be able to Start a quiz if you have at least one student located in your room.) Page 14
d) Quiz settings a. Choose the pace of the quiz i. Student-paced quiz - Immediate Feedback Students take the quiz at their own pace and receive immediate right/wrong feedback and explanations after they answer each question. Students answer questions in order and cannot skip or change their answers. The teacher is able to monitor their progress via a Live Results Table. (Note: This is ideal for a quiz that will count as a grade. This is not ideal if the quiz is to be used as a warm-up or closure that the teacher may wish to do in real-time and display on the screen. ) ii. Student-paced quiz Student Navigation Students have the ability to edit questions, skip questions and navigate the Page 15
quiz their own way. Once they've completed the activity they can submit the entire assessment. You are able to monitor their progress via a Live Results Table. iii. Teacher-paced quiz - teacher controls when each question will be displayed (released to students) and when to close the question (that is, to move on to the next question). This is ideal for quizzes used as warm-ups or closures as the quiz and the student answers (aggregate individual students are not identified) can be displayed for the class. e) Additional settings a. Disable student names b. Randomize question order (To encourage students to work on their own and prevent collusion, you can choose to have the questions displayed in random order. This is ideal for a studentpaced quiz that counts as a grade.) c. Randomize answer order (Same function as above except for answers.) d. Disable student feedback f) Click on Start when you are ready to begin. Page 16
Editing a Quiz a) Click on Manage Quizzes. b) Select a quiz from the list. c) Click on Edit. d) Make edits as necessary and click on Save & Exit. (Note: there is no Save As option to keep the original quiz and save the edits under a new name. When using this Edit option, make sure that the changes you make are exactly what you want as the original quiz will not be saved. See Duplicating a Quiz section on the next page to create a different version of the same quiz.) Page 17
Duplicating a Quiz a) Click on Manage Quizzes. b) Click on My Quizzes. c) Select a quiz from the list. d) Click on the Duplicate button. e) Notice that you will have a Copy of the original quiz. Click on it. Click Edit. Click on the name of the quiz. Replace the Copy of name with a new name. f) Make edits as necessary and click on Save. (Duplicate quiz effectively functions as Save as, allowing you to keep the original quiz and make changes to a new version under a new name.) Page 18
Deleting a Quiz a) Click on Manage Quizzes. b) Click on My Quizzes. c) Select a quiz from the list. d) Click on Delete. e) Socrative will ask you to confirm your request to delete (as there is no undo button ). f) Click Confirm to delete or Cancel to not delete. Page 19
Importing a quiz activity a) Click on Manage Quizzes. b) Click on Import Quiz. (Note: you must have the SOC number of the quiz you will import. You get this from the author of the quiz. Socrative used to allow you to import quizzes from an Excel spreadsheet, but that function has been disabled.) c) Enter the SOC number and click on Import Quiz. Page 20
Space Race Space Race is a fun, interactive game where individuals or teams compete by answering questions from one of your pre-made quizzes. Each student (or team) has a different color spaceship. When they get a question right, the spaceship moves forward. When they get a question wrong, the ship stands still (it does not go backwards). The team whose rocket travels the farthest wins. To create a Space Race game: a) Design a Quiz made of multiple-choice questions (includes true-false questions). b) Click on Space Race. c) Select the Quiz you want students to use from the drop down menu d) Enter the number of teams (up to 15)/ g) Select whether to auto-assign team colors (recommended), or let the students choose. (Note: allowing students to choose their own colors can be a large time-waster. I recommend if using teams to have Page 21
Socrative auto-assign the team colors. Students will see their color displayed and will then have to get together with others of the same color to participate.) e) Select whether to disable feedback (recommended) or not. f) When playing in teams, only one member of the team needs to use his/her ipad. g) Click on Start Activity. h) Click on Finish when you want to end the Space Race. i) More information on results and reports will be covered in a following section. Page 22
Exit Ticket An Exit Ticket is a great way to check student understanding at the end of class. It asks students a series of quick questions, and sends the results in a report. Here are the questions included in an Exit Ticket: a) What is your name? b) How well did you understand today s material? 1. Totally got it 2. Pretty well 3. Not very well 4. Not at all c) What did you learn today (free response)? d) Please answer the teacher s question (this can be an oral question or something you write on the board). e) You'll see when the students have completed the Exit Ticket, and when they're done, hit "End Activity" and choose how to receive the results (see next section on Reports ). Page 23
Quiz reports Every time you have students take a quiz, or complete an Exit Ticket or Space Race, Socrative generates a data analysis report (by student and by question). Once the activity is complete, you will be prompted to choose between the following options: a) report (sends an Excel file report to the registered with Socrative) b) Download report (allows you to download the same Excel file) c) Google Drive (imports the report into your Google Drive you must have preset up this option to use it) d) View chart (allows you to instantly see how your students did) e) View later (doesn t display a report, but will allow you to retrieve the report at a later time) Choose the option you wish and then click the Submit button. Page 24
Sample Quiz Report a) The report lists the title of the quiz, the date and time it was completed, and the room number and teacher address. b) Each question is then listed as separate columns (the first column is always the student names) under which are found the individual student responses. Note that correct answers are highlighted in green and incorrect answers are highlighted in pink.
Retrieve a previous quiz report a) Click on Manage Quizzes. b) Click on Reports. c) Select the quiz from the list for which you would like a report. (Note: if you have run quiz more than once, for instance with two different sections of the same class, you will see the quiz listed twice with different date/time stamps.) d) Select how you would like to receive your report ( , download, Google Drive, view chart) Note that you can see each student by name (I ve block the names out here) as well as each student s answer to each question. Answers highlighted in green are correct. Answers highlighted in red are incorrect. Socrative also shows what percentage of students got each question correct (in blue).
Menu Button (Clear Room, My Profile, Logout) In the Menu section, you can: a) Clear the room. You will use this function when once class has finished a quiz on Socrative and you would like to prepare to use the program with an incoming class. b) Change your My Profile settings. a. Change the address associated with Socrative. Click on Edit next to the address and enter the new address. b. Change your password. Click on Edit. Enter your current Page 27
c) Logout password once and your new password twice. c. Change your room number. Click on Edit. Type in a new room name/number. If it has not already been claimed by another Socrative user, it will become yours. In absence of you creating your own room name/number, Socrative will automatically generate a 6-digit room number unique to you. Page 28
