2 The Comoser Roger Zare has been raised or his enviable gras o orchestration (Ne York Times) and or riting music ith ormal clarity and an alluringly mercurial surace He as born in Sarasota, lorida, and has ritten or a ide variety o ensembles, rom solo instruments to ull orchestra His orks have been erormed across the United States by such ensembles as the American Comosers Orchestra, the Minnesota Orchestra, the Sarasota Orchestra, the Omaha Chamber Symhony, the Asen Music estival Contemorary Ensemble, and the Ne York Youth Symhony An aard inning comoser, Zare has received the ASCA Nissim rize, to MI Student Comoser Aards, a Ne York Youth Symhony irst Music Commission, the 008 American Comosers Orchestra Underood Commission, a 010 Charles Ives Scholarshi rom the American Academy o Arts and Letters, and many other local and regional honors He has been comoser in residence at the Chamber Music estival o Lexington and the SONAR ne music ensemble Zare is currently ursuing his DMA at the University o Michigan, here he has studied ith right Sheng, Michael Daugherty and aul Schoenield He holds degrees rom the eabody Conservatory (MM) and the University o Southern Caliornia (M), and his revious teachers include Christoher Theoanidis, Derek ermel, David Smooke, Donald Crockett, Tamar Diesendruck, redrick Lesemann, and Morten Lauridsen revie Only About the Music In Mare Tranquillitatis (Sea o Tranquility), I sought to create a tightly cohesive and moving ork Uon close insection, one inds that all the musical material is derived rom only to ideas the descending ourth heard in the oening bar, hich is later inverted in the cello line at bar seven; and the loing melody heard or the irst time in the violas at measure, hich borros some motives rom the aorementioned cello line The iece also gives an oortunity to the leaders o each section besides the basses to lay in a solo quartet, juxtaosing lush laying ith delicate and intimate assages Reroduction rohibited The emotional arc o the iece culminates in the return o the second theme, the viola melody, at measure 70 It gros and transorms into a seeing gesture, bringing closure to the ent u tension What ollos is an eilogue, and the iece ends ith one inal tender moment ith the solos String Editing: Carrie Lane Gruselle ST668
