1 ENGAGING STUDENTS FOSTERING ACHIEVEMENT CULTIVATING 21 ST CENTURY GLOBAL SKILLS Content Area: Orchestra Unit Title: Music Literacy / History Comprehension Target Course/Grade Level: 3 & 4 Unit Overview Template Unit Summary By the end of grade 4, students will gain proficiency in the following techniques: Notation Comprehension, Composition/Improvisation, and Historical Attributes of Compositions. Primary interdisciplinary connections: 21 st century themes: Unit Rationale Standards 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4 Learning Targets Content Statements CPI # B B A B B A.2 Cumulative Progress Indicator (CPI) Identify musical elements in response to diverse aural prompts, such as rhythm, timbre, dynamics, form, and melody. Identify and categorize sound sources by common traits (e.g., scales, rhythmic patterns, and/or other musical elements), and identify rhythmic notation up to eighth notes and rests. Identify how artists and specific works of dance, music, theatre, and visual art reflect, and are affected by, past and present cultures. Clap, sing, or play on pitch from basic notation in the treble clef, with consideration of pitch, rhythm, dynamics, and tempo. Sing or play simple melodies or rhythmic accompaniments in AB and ABA forms independently and in groups, and sight-read rhythmic and music notation up to and including eighth notes and rests in a major scale. Compare and contrast culturally and historically diverse works of dance, music, theatre, and visual art that evoke emotion and that communicate cultural meaning. Unit Essential Questions Why is it important to be able to read notated music? What is the importance of being exposed to various cultural music? What is improvisation? Unit Enduring Understandings To be able to translate notated music in sound. To understand how different cultures affect how different music is played. The ability to make up tunes or melodies as you go.

Musical symbols and markings, for rhythm, pitch, harmony, articulation and dynamics. Based on the meter, I play and count, using numbers, and tapping my toes. Unit Learning Targets Students will... Notation Comprehension: - Recognize and understand common time, bar line, repeat sign, note names of the lines and spaces pertaining to the child s instrument. - Be able to play and count, using numbers according to the meter. - Recognize dynamic and tempo markings. - Understand how time signatures affect the piece. - Distinguish values of different notes and rest, and be able to count and play them alone or in groups. (i.e Whole, half, quarter, and eighth) Composition / Improvisation - Understand what the terms above mean. - Be able to create small compositions using the knowledge they obtained from above. - Be able to compose songs and perform them on their instruments. - Be able to improvise short rhythmic and melodic phrases on their instrument. History / Cultural music appreciation - Be aware of different composers from various historical periods. - Be able to relate the cultural and historical knowledge to a performance piece. - Be able to recognize music from different cultures. Evidence of Learning Summative Assessment (X days) - Within a school year, the student should participate in 2 performances, which will demonstrate their comprehension skills mentioned. - By the end of 4 th Grade students should be able to perform pieces within the level of Essential Elements Book 1.
