Northrop Grumman s STEM Vision Northrop Grumman recognizes the growing shortage of science-based talent in our workplaces and universities across the nation. Sustainment of our high-technology culture, society and economy will allow America to maintain its leadership position in an increasingly competitive world. Northrop Grumman is focusing resources on education programs and partnerships, especially in the STEM areas. We've embraced programs that we believe will help build a diverse employee pipeline. Northrop Grumman and its employees are: taking time to teach and inspire young people, reaching out to into our local schools, and establishing partnerships that enhance the quality of education and help to improve academic performance. 2
CyberPatriot CyberPatriot is the largest high school cyber defense competition in the nation. It was created to inspire high school students toward careers in cybersecurity or other STEM disciplines critical to our Nation s future. Conceived by the Air Force Association with Northrop Grumman as the presenting sponsor, CyberPatriot is open to all high schools or accredited home school programs around the country. Current schools that are participating locally include: Great Mills High School - Navy JROTC Team (approx. 10 Students) La Plata High School Navy JROTC Team (approx. 10 Students) Chopticon High School Air Force JROTC Team (approx. 10 students) Civil Air Patrol - St. Mary's Composite Squadron Patuxent River Team 1 (approx. 6 students) 3
St. Mary s Public School STEM Program 4 Northrop Grumman partners with the St. Mary s County Public School System to target emergent opportunities for students to learn about STEM. Some of the programs we support are: St. Mary's County Science Fair Mentorship Program: Organized by NAVAIR/NAWCAD' in coordination with the St. Mary's County Science Fair and Engineering Board - enables 30 students to participate. Ridge Elementary Robotics: Helps purchase robotic kits and other supplies that allow a team of 10 students to compete. Spring Ridge Middle School: Helps purchase VEX lq kits and LEGO Ev3 kits that enables a team of 40 students to compete. Piney Point Robotics: Helps purchase LEGO Ev3 kits and associated software and licenses that enable a team of 18 students to compete.
Patuxent River Flight Academy (Forrest Technology Center) Northrop Grumman partners with the newly established Patuxent River Flight Academy located at the Dr. James A. Forrest Career and Technology Center. This STEM program is open to high school students interested in learning the dynamics of flight. Their goal is to teach skills to help students make connections between math and real-world flight. Students learn how to plan missions, look at variables like weather that affect flight, and fly simulated aircraft. The classroom is outfitted with computers and three flight simulator booths to put students in a game-based learning environment. This is the first program of this type in the Mid-Atlantic region and will be similar to those established in Pensacola, Fla. 5 Pax River Flight Academy has 2 classes with 19 total students.
Natural Resources Management Program (Forrest Technology Center) Northrop Grumman partners with the Dr. James A. Forrest Career & Technology Center to sponsor the Natural Resources Management Program. This program uses the latest in scientific tools and technology to instruct students in physical, biological, and chemical environments that contribute to the overall health and ecology of our natural world--including elements that impact wildlife, water, soil, air, land and forest resources. Using industry standard scientific instrumentation and laboratory and field techniques along with analysis tools like ArcGIS, My World geographic information system software, population modeling software, and spreadsheet analysis software students gather and analyze data. Natural Resources Management Program has 30 total students. 6
Engineering Technology Program (Forrest Technology Center) Northrop Grumman partners with the Dr. James A. Forrest Career & Technology Center to sponsor the Engineering Technology Program. This program prepares students for entry into a two or four year college engineering program. Students will apply problem solving strategies and learn about the concepts of design and drafting. Construction and fabrication of projects will emphasize project management, materials, usage, resources, information processing, and system analysis.
