5 NSF s Math Science Partnerships The Math and Science Partnership (MSP) program is a major research and development effort that supports innovative partnerships to improve K-12 student achievement in mathematics and science. MSP projects are expected to raise the achievement levels of all students and significantly reduce achievement gaps in the mathematics and science performance of diverse student populations.
6 (MSP) 2 Grant Overview (MSP) 2 stands for: MINORITY STUDENT PIPELINE MATH SCIENCE PARTNERSHIP 12.4 million dollar grant from the National Science Foundation 5 years There are four components that are called Strands Strand One - Opportunities for Elementary and Middle School TEACHERS Strand Two - Opportunities for High School TEACHERS Strand Three - Opportunities for Middle and High School STUDENTS Strand Four - Opportunities for Undergraduate STUDENTS

9 Why the STEM Focus? Underrepresentation of minorities in STEM Lack of preparation in mathematics and science among underrepresented minority groups in the early elementary grades undermines enrollment and success in secondarylevel programs and, ultimately, in college and career choices later in life. Prince George s County is one of the largest majorityminority school systems in the nation with 127, 036 students enrolled in grades pk-12 (76% African American, 15% Hispanic).

Student Selection Criteria Rising 11 th and 12 th graders Passed all 4 HSAs Minimum B grade in Algebra and Geometry Minimum 2.50 GPA Must complete an application to be admitted in the program. College and Program Applications Process Dual Enrollment Application PGCC Admissions Application ACCUPLACER Placement Test
14 What is College Presence? Structure and Format Taught for 1.5 hours per day 5 days per week following PGCC s academic calendar Appropriate days off for PGCPS scheduled and unscheduled closures Gap Times A gap day is one where the PGCC instructor is not in the classroom. PGCPS Teacher of Record Science course prep College prep and presentations Special projects
15 Courses Offered BIO 1110 Environmental Biology Survey of basic scientific principles needed to understand current environmental problems and evaluate alternatives for solving those problems. BIO 1120 Environmental Biology Laboratory Supplements BIO 1110, providing laboratory and field experiences relevant to environmental issues. BIO 1100 Forensic Biology An introduction to the principles and concepts of the biological aspects of forensic science. An examination of the role of the laboratory in criminal investigation and human identification using forensic pathology, serology, anthropology, molecular biology, and other specializations.
16 Connect the Dots-Expected Outcomes 1. Increase the number of minorities from PGCPS who choose STEM related majors post-secondary school and/or enter STEM related careers. 2. Increase collaboration between school system and IHE s. 3. Head start on college careers-increase likelihood of finishing college in 4 years. 4. Ease transition from HS to college. 5. Increase high school graduation rates and college entrance rates. 6. Increase college grade point averages and progress toward college completion. 7. Scalability Strengthen the pipeline for underrepresented students in STEM majors and careers in Maryland.
