Boating Season Preparations Some say the anticipation and preparation is half the fun. Check out the Coast Guard maneuvers on Lake Erie on April 15, Also. Who are these masked men? A. B. C. 1. Tony Apotsos? 4. Phil Savage? 7. Bill Dudrow? 2. Tim Beachy? 5. Kevin Sibbring? 8. Dick Swanson? 3. Bill Drackett? 6. Brian Brucken? 9. Joe Caner? BIG NEWS! Lakeside Information Center to Open at the Pavilion This summer, a Lakeside Information Center will open at the Pavilion for guests. It will be located across from the North Coast Kite Co., in the space formerly occupied by Lakeside Landing. Lakeside thanks Carol Yoakam for her many years of service at Lakeside Landing. The Lakeside Board of Directors approved the information center as part of the Strategic Plan s third and fourth goals: To assure Lakeside is a safe, healthy and aesthetically-pleasing community and to address emerging 21st century guest expectations. To provide support to the congestion at the Lakeside Chautauqua Administration Office, the information center s location will be easily accessible for guests to ask questions about the Chautauqua program, complete reservations for waterfront activities and finalize payment for boat rentals, including standup paddleboards, kayaks, and Sunfish sailboats. It will also serve to help guests register for wooden boat rides, obtain a fishing license and regulations, and sign up for sailing lessons. In addition, guests will be able to register and make payments for various recreational events, including the Kelleys Island Swim, 5k Raccoon Run, Triathlons and sailing races. Payment and registration will still be available at the Lakeside Chautauqua Administration Office. The Lakeside Information Center will be open over Memorial Day weekend from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday, May 23 and 12-6 p.m. Sunday, May 24. During the 2015 Bonus Weekend, the information center will be open from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday, May 30 and 12-6 p.m. Sunday, May 31. From Saturday, June 6-Sunday, Sept. 6, the center will be open from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday- Saturday and 12-6 p.m. Sunday. Guests may contact the Lakeside Information Center at (419) , ext. 266 or infocenter@lakesideohio.com. 2
LWBS CO-PRESIDENTS P.A. & Christi Dunfee We are excited to be at the helm of LWBS this year. Frank Baker cut his presidential term short as he has joined the Lakeside Chautauqua Board of Directors. We look forward to continuing support from all of you as we promote the LWBS programs and activities that have been established in prior seasons. Our varied programs and activities are near and dear to the hearts of wooden boaters and the larger Lakeside community. We will also foster the relationship between LWBS and SOS. The 2015 boating season is coming soon. A time to rekindling old friendships along with making new ones! Society of Old Salts PRESIDENT Joe Caner Spring is in the air, snow is gone and soon we will be sailing on summer breezes on lake Erie where the ice should be long gone by the time you read this. We will be working from the newly renovated Sailing Center as reported and shown in the Fall LBN newsletter. I would like to take this opportunity to revisit what SOS is and does. SOS gives advice and financial support to the Lakeside sailing program. SOS volunteers run the big boat races, Kids Setting Sail, and the Mouse Island race. SOS also maintains all the sailboats and related equipment. The Lakeside Association hires staff, rents and stores boats, conducts sailing lessons and runs the Annual Regatta. Every penny that is donated to SOS goes to the sailing program. We have an endowment that was funded primarily by 720 memberships. The income from that we use for capital expenses each year above what is provided by the Association. This year we plan to cover the sailing area with river stone, provide new furniture for the patio, two new stand up paddle boards, minor repairs to the carpeted pads and the remaining capital funds contributed to the sailing center renovation. The stone will improve the looks of the area and make it easier to walk on. Other donations are put in to a cash fund that is used for miscellaneous needs, boat parts, supplies, etc again not supplied by the Association. Thank you for your contributions this year. I have been told that the two ash trees in the middle of the boat storage area have been removed. We knew this was coming not just when. They were a source of shade for the Kids Setting Sail registration table. We have requested a table with umbrella to replace this shade. See you soon at the Sailing Center!. Sailboat Races: Watch the Lakesider for racing details! Races for boats big & small and Lakesiders big & small... Kids Setting Sail: Sailing Adventures Continue in
by Bill Maenner Lakeside sailors have much to be proud of with the continued success of the Kids Setting Sail Program. Introducing children and excited family members to a sailing experience sets the prospect of a life-long connection to the Lakeside Sailing Center. It s the amazing volunteer base that nurtures this introduction to sailing. This summer marks our 13 th year of operation. The idea of a Sunfish sailing experience for children first appeared in , but it just didn t seem to work. In 2005, the program was successfully reorganized. From , when current attendance records were kept, the average number of budding sailors was 833. But, it was during the 2012 season that an all-time record of 947 total riders was reached! With your help, we can continue to conduct a fun, professional, helpful program for kids of all ages in Join us every Sunday from 2:15-4:30 PM to watch, or join in, on this productive program. We will be keeping the same format for this season. The administrative crew will handle the paperwork and prep the sailors for their ride. The land crew will ready the eager participants for boarding the Sunfish. The water crew, handling boats, will board the riders and assist the sailors. This will give the sailors a steady supply of eager kids. The Kids Setting Program continues to be successful in that it promotes the entire Lakeside Sailing Center, gives many children a chance to try sailing at an early age, and brings lots of joy to parents and grandparents. These children are our future sailors, and many have taken sailing lessons after participating in our program. The sailing community has much to be proud of for making this happen. The 12 th Annual Lakeside Wooden Boat Show 4
by Mame Drackett We have already started gearing up for the 12 th Annual Lakeside Wooden Boat Show! This year s show will be held on Sunday, July 19 th, from noon - 5pm. Once again, Lakeside Chautauqua will be pairing the show with the Plein-Air Art Festival, which will run Friday Sunday. Last year was a record breaking year for the Wooden Boat Show with over 75 classic beauties lining the shore and Dock of Lakeside. The show also drew a record crowd last year and we are hoping for the same this year. Several new additions are in the works for this years show, more on that front later! There is unlimited space to display wooden boats on the lawn of the historic Hotel Lakeside. However, there is limited space at the dock. The dock is on a first reserved, first served basis. As always, registration is FREE, and each registered boat will received two, one-day Chautauqua passes to Lakeside for the day of the show. To register, please contact Mame Drackett at mame@drackett.cc When you register, please provide the following information: -Exhibitor s Name - Address -Phone Number (the best way to reach you) Lakeside Summer Sailstice
by Ron Jacobs The Lakeside Wooden Boat Society (LWBS) and the Society of Old Salts (S.O.S.) will hold the 5th Annual Lakeside Summer Sailstice on Friday, June 19. All Lakeside boaters are invited to participate. The Summer Sailstice is the global initiative that calls upon all sailors to mark the beginning of the summer sailing season. It also reminds people about the need to preserve the waterways for future generations. The sailing event has grown steadily from just a handful of boats to nearly 10 sailboats with full crews. Prior to the Lakeside Summer Sailstice, Lakesiders are invited to attend a lecture, presented by the Operations Officer of the Coast Guard Station in Marblehead, Ohio, on the lake conditions for the season. The lecture will take place from 5:30-6:15 p.m. at Gravel Bar Yacht Club, located at 8565 Gravel Bar Blvd., Marblehead, Ohio at Bar Harbor Marina. Immediately following the lecture, Lakesiders will gather for a potluck before participating in the Lakeside Summer Sailstice. One of the highlights of the Lakeside Summer Sailstice has been the blessing of the fleet by the Rev. Dr. Irwin Jennings. This year, Dr. Jennings will stand at the end of the Lakeside dock and bless each boat and crew as they pass. The blessing of the fleet will begin at 7:30 p.m. Sailboats and powerboats are invited to participate. After the blessing, boaters are invited to take a sunset cruise to enjoy the longest day of the year.. Pirate Adventure: Watch the Lakesider for monthly adventures! With each voyage comes a new batch of young pirate hopefuls... 6
2015 Wooden Boat Excursions & Sunset Charters: 2015 by Phil Savage The Lakeside Wooden Boat Society (LWBS) offers a variety of summer boating events. Wooden boat rides are available every Monday and Thursday until August 27, The 30-minute boat rides begin at 6 p.m. with the last ride departing at 7:30 p.m. The cost is $20/adult and $6/youth (ages 4-12). Hour-long sunset cruises aboard Amazing Grace, a fully restored 1937 Richardson Cruiseabout, take place at 8 p.m. The cost is $32/adult and $10/youth (ages 4-12). A minimum of four passengers is required per charter. A maximum of six passengers is allowed, and children age 3 and under are not permitted on any wooden boat rides. Reservations for both boat rides are taken at the Lakeside Information Center, located at the Pavilion, or contact at (419) , ext. 266 or infocenter@lakesideohio.com. Ask the Lakeside Information Center staff about additional details, including cancellations and inclement weather. If space allows, walk-on rides may be purchased from 5:30-7:30 p.m. from the Lakeside dock attendants. Private charters are also available to cruise the Lake Erie islands for weddings, anniversaries, birthdays or other special events. Contact the Conference & Event Planning Office at (419) , ext. 279 or conference@lakesideohio.com to book a private charter aboard Amazing Grace. Reservations may be cancelled by calling Conference & Event Planning Office at least 48 hours in advance of the scheduled departure. Cancellations less than 24 hours will be charged. 7
Pond Boat Building by Dan Fought I made it all by myself. This is the most common happy and confident response kids give when describing their pond boat building experience. Pre-school through elementary grades make wood boats using real tools and materials that propel thru in the water. They make them with no (or almost no) help from adults. These are not milk carton boats or computer screen boats! The Lakeside Wooden Boat Society sponsors this set of wooden pond boat building workshops. Children learn about boats, how to use a variety of tools, and test out their boats in the water at the end of the workshop. The schedule is as follows: Puddle Boat (for kids ages 4-6). Section A: 9 a.m.-10:30 a.m. Monday // Section B: 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Monday Jet Balloon Boat (for kids ages 6-9). Section A: 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Tuesday // Section B: 1:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m. Tuesday Super Sailboat (for kids ages 9-12). Section A: 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Thursday // Section B: 1:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m. Thursday 8
Register through the Rhein Center on-line, at the Rhein Center Sunday afternoon from 1-3 p.m., or call Dan Fought, lead instructor, at Workshops have a $10 registration fee and take place in Central Park under the tent by the Lakeside Pavilion and basketball courts. SOS Organizes to Improve Communication by Charlotte Maenner As SOS Secretary, I am pleased to report that the SOS organization is advancing into the age of technology! Now, communications are easily maintained through a newly created data base which enables s to be used to share information on both SOS updates, and distribute issues of the LBN Newsletter. Responses to a September hard copy mailing helped the data to be compiled with all members names, addresses, and s. It s the addresses that can easily change, and will have to be continuously updated. Thank you to everyone who shares in this process. If anyone knows of interested people who want to keep involved with the lakefront news, or contribute in any way to maintaining this beautiful part of Lakeside, please contact me at ccmaenner@aol.com, and your name will be included on this data base. SOS will continue with an October hard copy mailing for data base updates, and donations. We also encourage our members to share stories, articles and pictures for publication in either the SOS, or the LBN newsletters. Let s make this summer a time of renewing old friendships, working together to make SOS an even stronger, integral part of your Lakeside experience, and enjoying the beautiful Lake Erie setting of our community.
