CHAPTER 1 WINTER UNIVERSIADE GRANADA INTRODUCTION Dear friends, For the members of the Organising Committee of the Winter Universiade Granada 2015, it is an honour to host you in our city. Through this guide, we would like to introduce you into an event in which we have worked with enthusiasm, as the Universiade represents a great opportunity for us. From time immemorial, both Winter sports and University have been a symbol of identity of Granada. For this reason, we cannot imagine a better event than the Winter Universiade we are introducing in this manual. Granada 2015 will be a window to show the world our province, in an audience especially important for us: university students. We would not like to forget the legacy this event will leave regarding knowledge and promotion of sport, principles we share deeply with the International University Sports Federation. Concerning ice sports, the Universiade will bequeathe an important legacy, as Winter sports in Granada will come full circle. As other sports events, this Universiade has overcome some difficulties. Fortunately, the experience through decades organizing international high level and very demanding sports events, has left an important legacy in this city regarding organizational skills. As an example, the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships in 1996 left timeless memories in the province, as well as the recent ISSF World Shooting Championships or the FIBA Basketball World Cup. They all left an important mark, as we are sure the Winter Universiade will do. I would like to reiterate my gratitude for counting on your presence. You are also the Universiade. Welcome! 12 CHAPTER 2 - WELCOME TO GRANADA

CHAPTER 2 WELCOME TO GRANADA 2.1 GRANADA The province of Granada covers an area of km2 and is inhabited by more than 925,000 people. The city is located in the eastern part of the depression of Granada, at the foothills of the National Park of Sierra Nevada. With over a thousand years of history, Granada is one of the cities with the largest cultural heritage. The Alhambra, the Albaicin or Sierra Nevada are the icons of a province with innumerable natural and artistic treasures. Over half an hour drive leads the visitor to the Mediterranean Sea. In spring it is even possible to ski and enjoy the beach in the same day. Tourism is the principal driver behind Granada s economy, because of its monuments and the closeness of its professional ski resort -about a million skiers come to Sierra Nevada each season-, and the historic area known as La Alpujarra. Amongst its historical buildings, the Alhambra is one of the largest in the country, named World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1984, along with the Gardens of the Generalife and Albaicin. The Cathedral is considered the first Renaissance church in Spain. Over five centuries, the University of Granada has deeply influenced the character of the city. It currently has more than 60,000 students annually, and receives another 20,000 in additional courses. It has 3,650 teachers. The institution is a benchmark for foreign students and has become one of the most popular among young people of the Erasmus program

CHAPTER 2 WELCOME TO GRANADA 2.2 SIERRA NEVADA The National and Natural Park of Sierra Nevada has the two highest peaks of the Iberian Peninsula: the Mulhacén (3,842 m) and the Veleta (3,392 m). It was declared Reserve of the Biosphere by the UNESCO in 1986, Natural Park in 1989 and, finally, National Park in Sierra Nevada, Sulayr, the mountain of the sun as it was called by the Muslims, it is a giant, compact mass that holds up to twenty peaks above 3,000 meters, including Mulhacen meters, the highest point of the Iberian Peninsula. Sighted from the north, from the depression of Granada, a relief of ridged peaks can be seen in the horizon. The footsteps of the Quaternary glacial erosion, the southernmost of the European continent, come into focus. And in the inside, unique and spectacular valleys embossed in U, cirques, lagoons, lateral moraines and summits, such as the Laguna de la Caldera, can be enjoyed. We should not forget its fauna and its flora. It has 2100 catalogued vegetal species, 65 being exclusive species: the stars of snows, the poppy of the mountain range, cammomile and the violet of Sierra Nevada. This alpine area, located in the heart of Andalusia, has an abundant fauna with more than 60 species of birds and diverse mammals like the ibex - which is relatively easy to see jumping between the snow-white stones of the summit. Also, the common small mole and the weasels stand out. The numerous springs, water-bearing streams, rivers and aquifers receive the frozen water from the high summits during the thaw, giving greater splendor to the landscape and the towns of the Alpujarra. This area is suitable for the practice of sports like trekking or to walk in one of the diverse routes that cross the park: the Vereda de la Estrella, the itinerary of the Trevélez River or the Capileira-Mulhacén

CHAPTER 2 WELCOME TO GRANADA OTHER NATURAL PARKS IN GRANADA The province of Granada has a great diversity of natural, as well as a great amount of places of a rich environmental value. In all of them a great variety of vegetal species and animals can be found, many of them endemic. Sierra de Huétor Natural Park The Sierra de Huétor Natural Park is very near to the city of Granada, situation that has turned it into a space of relaxation. Its extension occupies 12,128 hectares and it is placed between 1,100 and 1,900 m of altitude. The limestone nature of its soil gives way to landscapes of incredible beauty with mountainous elevations, narrow ravines, edges, calares and streams. The karstic formation like the Agua cave stands out. The water has a special importance in this place as like tool to shape the landscape, as well as generator of life. From the well-known Fuente Grande of Alfacar to the Canal of Aynadamar, the water was taken to the Albaicín in Arab period and is still today, to the gardens and fountains of the Alhambra. About the vegetation, the Sierra de Huetor Natural Park is covered by forests of pine groves, as well as by great spots of Holm oak forests, some quejigales and forests of oaks and maples. Its fauna also has wealth, with great variety of mammals like the ibex, the wild boar, the fox, the gineta, the weasel and the wild cat. Also, we found a great amount of prey birds like the royal eagle, the azor and the royal owl. The implication of this area in the protection of its fauna can be seen thanks to the work made by the Recovery Centre of Threatened Species of Las Mimbres. The Mountain range of Baza Natural Park The Mountain range of Baza Natural Park is located in a place of incomparable beauty between two extensive plains that correspond to the Hoya de Guadix-Granada and the Llanos of El Marquesado. There are many testimonies that say that it was an area already populated from very old times. Thus, it is necessary to emphasize to the visitor the paintings in the rock from the Palaeolithic period found in the Jabalcon mount. About the fauna, the park has a rich community of birds, the prey birds standing out among them, like the royal eagle or the royal owl, great amount of small mammals like the wild cat or the badger, and small reptiles and amphibians that inhabit the groves of the rivers: common frog, snake... About the vegetation, it changes as we go up. Stand out as native species the oaks, the thorny scrub, the quejigos and the maples. Stand out the repopulations of the laricio pine and the carrasco pine. It is of great importance from the botanical point of view the community of thyme, unique species in the mountainous area, located in the called Blanquizares, as well as the Prados del Rey, with beautiful humid landscapes of high mountain that nourish of numerous streams and springs. We must not forget that the park is furrowed by small streams and rivers that in their majority spill their waters in the Baza River. Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama Natural Park The Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama National Park is located between the provinces of Granada and Málaga, creating a natural border between them. Its history is full of legend on smuggling, forbidden activities, rebellion and resistance to the established order. This park has great similarities with the mountainous massifs of the north of Spain, with which it shares an impressive morphology dominated 28 29

CHAPTER 2 WELCOME TO GRANADA by steep slopes, acute crests and deep ravines. It has very high peaks, like the Maroma, of 2,068 meters. Among its flora, species like the carrasco pine, the palmito, revientacabras or the boxwood stand out. Finally, in its fauna we can find squirrels, ibex and prey birds. The Sierra de Castril Natural Park The Sierra de Castril Natural Park is located within the municipal term of the same name. One of the most outstanding things of the park is its orography, shaped thanks to the limestone composition of its ground, to the great amount of rain in the summits and to the action of the water and the wind. Due to all of this, there are a great amount of caves, grottos and galleries in this natural place, where the Muerto cave and the Don Fernando cave, the biggest in length and depth, with the Colada hall, stand out. About its vegetation, in the higher points of the park can be find salgareño pine surrounded by sabinas, junipers, quejigos and maples. Its fauna is also very abundant, with unique species in the Iberian Peninsula as they are certain butterflies and musgaño of Cabrera, a mammal with aspect of mouse, very difficult to spot. In their walls the leonado vultures, the peregrine falcon and the Egyptian vulture nest. About the mammals, the ibex stands out. Other natural spaces - NATURAL PLACE MARO-CERRO GORDO CLIFFS. Located in the Tropical Coast, it is a coastal relief of 395 hectares formed by the erosion where the Sierra de Almijara is opened to the Mediterranean Sea. In its marine depths valuable prairies of posidonia grow. It is an area of high ecological value, ideal to practice scuba diving. - LA SAGRA. It has the highest summits of Andalusia after Sierra Nevada, placed behind the Mountain ranges of Cazorla and Segura. The landscape that surrounds it has very marked contrasts, passing from an almost steppe vegetation in some areas to remarkable forests of pines and oaks. - SIERRA DE ORCE. It houses deposits of great paleonthological and archaeological importance, like Venta Micena. - SIERRA GORDA- LOJA. This karstic modelled example, ideal of for the practice of the free fall, is used as habitat, in the well-known area known as El Charco del Negro, to species like the gallipato. - SIERRA DE LOS GUÁJARES. First mountainous step that, along with the Sierra de Lújar, works as a bridge between the sea and the south western slope of Sierra Nevada. Its cultivation system in terraces recalls the Muslim inheritance. - SIERRA DE LÚJAR. This mountainous relief of the Alpujarra allows the lovers of the free flight to land in the coast. - SIERRA DE LA CONTRAVIESA. In the heart of the Alpujarra, between Sierra Nevada and the Mediterranean Sea, it is a traditional area of grapeyards and wine production
