2 The Green Deal The Green Deal is the Government s initiative to reduce carbon emissions from UK buildings. The premise behind the Green Deal is that energy efficiency measures can be installed in homes and commercial buildings at no upfront cost to the owner. Finance will be provided by private firms, with costs being recouped through charges on energy bills which will reduce as a result of the energy efficiency measures. Reducing Carbon Emissions The Climate Change Act (2008) requires 80% reduction in carbon emissions by 2050 compared to 1990 levels In total, buildings account for approximately 40% of all UK carbon emissions Our homes account for approximately 27% of all UK carbon emissions From 2016 all new homes should be near zero carbon - however, only 100,000 new homes per year are built compared to 26.7million existing homes It is expected that 85% of homes which are in existence now will still be in use in 2050 Golden Rule Reducing Fuel Bills and Fuel Poverty There are an estimated 4.75million households in fuel poverty - 18% of all UK households - compared to 2 million households in 2004 (DECC, 2012) Fuel prices are rising and forecast to rise further making it increasingly important to limit the amount of energy used within a home It is therefore essential that the existing housing stock is upgraded to improve energy efficiency and reduce fuel bills, and subsequently lower the number of households in fuel poverty We must invest in the existing housing stock if we are to reduce carbon emissions and tackle fuel poverty The key principle, or golden rule, for accessing Green Deal finance is that the charge attached to the bill should not exceed the expected savings, and the length of the payment period should not exceed the expected lifetime of the measures. Department of Energy and Climate Change The Green Deal will be the biggest home improvement programme since the Second World War... Greg Barker, Minister for Climate Change

High level technical support Our Technical Advice and Support Centre (TASC) is able to provide the following: Technical advice and support for all Knauf Insulation solutions U-value calculations to assist inputting into RdSAP calculations U-value calculations created by certified members of the BBA/ TIMSA U-value and condensation analysis competency scheme Provider specific assistance and information In relation to product assurance, the Green Deal Code of Practice requires that Green Deal Providers confirm with their suppliers that products to be installed in a Green Deal property are a type capable of or designed to - deliver the level of fuel bill savings estimated for the measure during the Green Deal Assessment. We are able to work with Green Deal Providers to supply documentation to illustrate how our policies and processes will contribute to this level of assurance.

7 Energy Company Obligation We have solutions suitable for all elements of the Energy Company Obligation and are able to arrange funding for projects where applicable. How much per annum Eligibility Qualifying measures Affordable warmth / home heating cost reduction target Affordable warmth includes a target for reducing heating bills for low income and vulnerable households, in order to help make the space and water heating in their home more affordable. Carbon target / carbon emissions reduction obligation The carbon saving target is designed to provide additional ECO support when it is needed to bring a Green Deal project in line with the Golden Rule. Carbon saving communities obligation The carbon saving communities element of ECO provides a target to reduce fuel poverty in the most deprived areas using an area based approach. 350m 760m 190m Low income and vulnerable households Insulation Measures Loft insulation Cavity wall insulation Solid wall insulation Other Measures Efficient boilers Boiler repairs Able-to-pay - assisting with The Golden Rule Insulation Measures Solid wall insulation Hard to treat cavity wall insulation Other Measures Any fabric measure which reduces heating load once above measures are done Post code driven - most deprived areas Insulation Measures Loft insulation Cavity wall insulation Solid wall insulation 7

8 Insulation - the easiest and most cost effective Installing insulation in buildings is the easiest and most cost effective way to save energy and will often be the first measure recommended within a Green Deal RdSAP assessment. In a building, the larger the temperature difference between the inside and the outside, the thicker the layer of insulation typically needs to be to reduce heat flow. Buildings are the largest users of energy, mainly through heating and cooling, so increased insulation can dramatically reduce energy use and save money. Although high efficiency boilers and thermostats can help improve thermal performance, it s insulation that controls the operation of these products by reducing heat loss. Furthermore, unlike other methods of energy efficiency, insulation keeps performing for the life of a building continually saving energy and increasing comfort for occupants. Cold air -5 C Warm air +35 C maximum heat loss reducing heat loss 21 C Perfect Inside temperature maximum heat gain reducing heat gain minimising heat loss minimising heat gain Mineral wool works naturally by trapping still air within it s matrix of fibres

9 way to save energy Saving energy, money and the environment Mineral wool has a sustainability advantage over many other insulation materials because it is made from abundant natural raw materials. It is safe to use, and in the life of a building can save over 400 times the energy used in its manufacture. Furthermore, the performance of mineral wool does not deteriorate over time, and glass mineral wool can be fully recyclable at the end of a building's life. Mineral wool with ECOSE Technology Knauf Insulation mineral wool products made with ECOSE Technology are more sustainable as they have the added benefit of using a binder which is up to 70% less energy intensive than traditional binders. With ECOSE Technology, rapidly-renewable bio-based materials replace the petroleum-based chemicals and eliminate phenol and formaldehyde from the manufacturing process. The technology has been developed for Knauf Insulation s glass and rock mineral wool products, enhancing their environmental credentials without affecting the thermal, acoustic or fire performance. Insulation products made with ECOSE Technology contain no dye or artificial colours the colour is completely natural. Superior level of sustainability Manufactured from abundant naturally occurring and/or recycled materials The technology is free from formaldehyde, phenols, pentanes, butanes and acrylics Lower embodied energy than traditional oil based binders Improves the overall sustainability of buildings Superior handling Softer feel Odourless Easy to cut Naturally brown colour No artificial colours or dyes added Exceptional benefits of mineral wool Energy saving High insulation efficiency for maximum thermal comfort Non-combustibility for enhanced safety Superb acoustic performance Rapid return on investment Insulating a house delivers a high return on investment. Installing glass mineral wool in an empty loft can pay for itself in less than 2 years with lower heating bills. Insulating both cavity walls and the loft can save a household up to 310* every year in heating costs. Savings year after year Insulation will continue to save money year after year with no further investment. Insulation also has the added benefit of requiring no maintenance unlike other energy saving solutions such as high efficiency boilers. Helps fight global warming and climate change If every home in the UK installed cavity wall and loft insulation CO 2 emissions would be cut by 10.8 million tonnes per year. Increases viability of renewable energy Insulation in a building reduces the energy demand. This means that in the drive for zero carbon houses renewable energy can be downsized to improve affordability. With greater insulation, measures such as micro-generation with photovoltaic cells and wind turbines will become more viable options. *Source - October
