Summer Studio is a great opportunity to hone critical thinking skills and build solid foundations and skill sets in specific disciplines. Inside this handbook you will find important information regarding your time at The Art Institute of Phoenix, including daily schedules, transportation, and housing information. The handbook is created to serve as a reference tool for participants and their parents before and during the program. Please read carefully and contact us with any further questions you may have. 4 ORIENTATION ORIENTATION HOUSING Orientation for housing participants will be on the evenings of Monday, June 17 and Tuesday, June 18 at The Sheraton Crescent Hotel in Phoenix depending on your workshop choice. Participants staying at the hotel will need to arrive at 6:30 pm to check-in, orientation will begin at 7:00 pm. Chaperones will be stationed in the lobby area to welcome you. Culinary and Fashion workshop attendees will attend orientation on Monday, June 17. Media Arts and Design workshop attendees will attend orientation on Tuesday, June 18. ORIENTATION NON-HOUSING Orientation for non-housing workshop participants will be on the mornings of Tuesday, June 18 and Wednesday, June 19 at The Art Institute of Phoenix at 8:30 am. The Art Institute of Phoenix is located at 2233 W. Dunlap Avenue, Phoenix, AZ Participants that are providing their own housing accommodations will need to arrive at 8:00 am to check-in, orientation will begin at 8:30 am. Culinary and Fashion workshop attendees will attend orientation on Tuesday, June 18. Media Arts and Design workshop attendees will attend orientation on Wednesday, June 19. Orientation attendance is mandatory for all participants. Parents are encouraged to attend! WORKSHOPS Culinary and Fashion workshops will run from 9:00 am 5:00 pm June and 9:00 am 2:00 pm on June 20. A parent reception will conclude Summer Studio on Thursday, June 20 at 2:00 pm. Activities are planned for housing participants Monday Wednesday evening that will end at 10:00 pm at The Sheraton Crescent Hotel. Media Arts and Design workshops will run from 9:00 am 5:00 pm June and 9:00 am 2:00 pm on June 21. A parent reception will conclude Summer Studio on Friday, June 21 at 2:00 pm. Activities are planned for housing participants Tuesday Thursday evening that will end at 10:00 pm at The Sheraton Crescent Hotel. PARENT RECEPTION Parents and guardians should plan to arrive at 2:00 pm at The Art Institute of Phoenix to attend a presentation specifically for parents. Parents and guardians will then be directed to the location of their participant s workshop to attend the reception, view participant work, and meet the faculty and staff of The Art Institute of Phoenix. Parents, guardians and participants will also have the opportunity to meet with an Admissions Representative during this time to have the opportunity to begin the enrollment process at The Art Institute of Phoenix, if they feel the school is a right fit. Refreshments will be served. The Summer Studio workshops will officially end around 4:00 pm. At this time, all participants will return home. 4
5 Culinary and Fashion will present their portfolio work on Thursday, June 20. Media Arts and Design will present their portfolio work on Wednesday, June 19. Your tickets for admission to the Parent Reception will be ed to the address provided with the registration. TRANSPORTATION FROM AIRPORT - The most accessible airport to The Art Institute of Phoenix is Sky Harbor, Phoenix (PHX). The airport is approximately 30 minutes from where both The Art Institute of Phoenix and The Sheraton Crescent Hotel are located. Participants arriving at PHX can use SuperShuttle service to get to The Sheraton Crescent Hotel for Orientation. This will be the easiest and most cost-effective form of transportation. After you claim your luggage at Sky Harbor Airport, proceed to the outer island marked Van Service. A SuperShuttle Guest Service Representative will arrange transportation to your destination, The Sheraton Crescent (2620 W. Dunlap Avenue, Phoenix, AZ 85021). Visit their website at www. supershuttle.com for more information. You can also call 800.BLUE.VAN ( ) to make a reservation by phone prior to arriving in Phoenix. All transportation to and from the airport to The Art Institute of Phoenix is the student s responsibility. DRIVING DIRECTIONS - The Sheraton Crescent Hotel is located in Phoenix at 2620 W. Dunlap Avenue, just three short blocks from The Art Institute of Phoenix. If driving, take Interstate I-17,exit on Dunlap Avenue and continue east. The hotel is immediately on your right on the north side of Dunlap Avenue. For more maps and parking details, please visit or call The Sheraton Crescent Hotel at PARTICIPANTS STAYING AT THE SHERATON - Participants staying at The Sheraton will walk or take a short shuttle ride from the hotel to The Art Institute of Phoenix located at 2233 W Dunlap Avenue, Phoenix, All transportation for the housing participant s evening activities will be provided by The Art Institute of Phoenix. Housing participants must use school-sponsored transportation at all times throughout the duration of the workshops in all instances. PARTICIPANTS DRIVING TO WORKSHOPS - Our campus is located on the intersection of 23rd Avenue and Dunlap in Phoenix. Complimentary parking during Summer Studio will be available in The Art Institute of Phoenix s parking garage located next to the building. The Art Institute of Phoenix will not be responsible for any parking tickets or fees a student might incur by parking in a location other than our parking garage. PARTICIPANTS BEING DROPPED OFF/PICKED UP - Participants will need to be checked in (preferably by a parent) between 8:00 8:30 am the first workshop dayand may be dropped off between 8:30 9:00 am the remaining workshop days. Pick up is outside the front entrance between 5:00 5:30 pm. All participants will depart campus at the conclusion of the workshops and parent reception at 4:00 pm on the final workshop day. 5
6 TRANSPORTATION TO SKY HARBOR AIRPORT (PHX) - Participants needing transportation back to the airport can use the SuperShuttle service. Participants will be responsible for payment for this service. HOTEL INFORMATION THE SHERATON CRESCENT HOTEL The Art Institute of Phoenix has prearranged space for housing participants at The Sheraton Crescent Hotel in Phoenix which is a short walk or complimentary shuttle ride to our campus at 2233 W Dunlap Avenue, Phoenix, AZ The Sheraton Crescent Hotel 2620 W. Dunlap Avenue, Phoenix, AZ CHECK-IN Check-in for housing participants will be on the evenings of Monday, June 17 and Tuesday, June 18 at The Sheraton Crescent Hotel in Phoenix depending on your workshop choice. If you do not have a roommate choice, The Art Institute of Phoenix will match you with another workshop participant. Long-distance telephone service, pay-perview movies/games, and room service will be disabled during your stay. If you desire these services, you must bring a credit card or cash deposit to be left with the front desk for incidental expenses. CHECK-OUT Participants staying at The Sheraton Crescent Hotel will check-out of their rooms prior to attending breakfast on the last day of workshops. Participants will bring their luggage with them to campus where it will be stored in a locked room until the workshops conclude. GENERAL INFORMATION EVENING ACTIVITIES The planned evening activities are reserved for housing participants only and are included in the price of tuition. Activities take place directly after the workshops and will end at 10:00 pm every night at The Sheraton Crescent Hotel. A detailed agenda of the evening activities will be given to you at or prior to your housing orientation. 6
7 MEALS Breakfast Breakfast will be served between 7:30 8:00 am at The Sheraton Crescent Hotel for housing participants only Lunch Lunch will be served from 12:00 12:30 pm each workshop day for all participants. Dinner Dinner will be provided for housing participants only during the evening activities. SPENDING MONEY Students cannot cash personal checks at The Art Institute of Phoenix, but there is an ATM located in our student lounge area. We suggest using travelers checks and participants should bring enough money for any items they wish to purchase as souvenirs. SUPPLIES All supplies for the workshops will be provided to participants. Attention: Photography participants You will be using digital SLR cameras and lenses provided by The Art Institute of Phoenix during the workshops. You do not need to bring equipment of your own. IDENTIFICATION Remember to bring some form of identification with you such as a driver s license, state ID card or passport as you will need this for some of our activities. You will also be issued a temporary school ID card, which you must wear at all times to have access into the school and any of its facilities. Please cooperate and remember to wear your ID card at all times. Participants are also encouraged to bring a copy of their medical insurance identification cards. CELLULAR PHONES We recommend participants bring their cell phones to Summer Studio. Please include the participant s cell phone number on the Response Form in the release forms. The use of cell phones for sending text messages or making phone calls during class time is strictly prohibited. CHAPERONES All activities will be chaperoned by employees of The Art Institute of Phoenix. Chaperones will also stay overnight at The Sheraton Crescent Hotel. DRESS CODE Apparel should be casual, tasteful, and comfortable. Some activities require walking, comfortable shoes are recommended. Attention: Culinary participants You are required to wear long pants and closed-toe shoes in the classroom and kitchens. REFUND POLICY If you have to cancel your Summer Studio reservation, $50 for non-housing or $100 for housing is non-refundable. Remaining tuition is fully refundable until the date of June 10, After this date all fees are non-refundable, regardless of early departure. All workshops are non-credit bearing, and do not transfer into any of the programs offered at The Art Institute of Phoenix. 7
