1 USU Art Gallery Application This application regards the University Student Union (USU) Art Gallery located on the first floor of the University Student Union. All visual media are welcome: paintings, sculpture, jewelry, photographs, printmaking, or fine and applied art and architecture. Artists may submit ideas for solo or group exhibitions. The next application deadline to exhibit is May 31, 2017 by 5:00 pm. Artists must agree to abide by all the regulations of the University Student Union policy with no offensive or vulgar imagery. All original work to be displayed is subject to approval by committee. All work must be limited a height of 4.5 feet and a depth of 2 feet. 4 Exhibit Timeframes Exhibit Timeframes for [Required] Note: Artists must install work. [ ] Session 2: October 3-28 [ ] Session 3: October 31 - November 25 [ ] Session 4: November 28 - December 23 [ ] Session 5: January 16 - February 10 [ ] Session 6: February 13 - March 10 [ ] Session 7: March 13 - April 14 [ ] Session 8: April 17 - May 19 Terms and Conditions UNIVERSITY STUDENT UNION ART GALLERY GUIDELINES Purpose The purpose of the USU Art Gallery is to encourage appreciation of art and its role in society through the engagement of original works from CSULB student artists. The rotating collection stimulates the creative process while enhancing the experience of all students visiting the University Student Union. The gallery will advance campus and public awareness of art as an educational, cultural and inspirational experience. California State University, Long Beach artists receive direct guidance and instruction in a hands-on business of exhibiting and marketing their artwork. Although the main emphasis will be on student work, the USU reserves the right to use the gallery to host visiting artists. The USU Board of Trustees and its subcommittee, Programs Evaluation Committee, review and select artwork to be exhibited into the gallery. The USU staff will collaborate with the University Art Museum and the College of the Arts to ensure a variety of exhibits throughout the year. Exhibition Space a. The USU Art Gallery will feature collections on a minimum 3-week time-frame allowing the opportunity for multiple collections throughout the year. b. The USU Art Gallery is reserved for CSULB students to exhibit their artwork. Priority is given to students, faculty, and staff. All artists outside of the CSULB community may exhibit their art with final approval from the USUBOT Programs and Evaluation Committee. c. All work must be installed by the artist in conjunction with the USU facilities staff and the USU Program Coordinator. Any art that is not removed by the exhibition deadline will become the property of ASI. Any permanent damage to the gallery by artist s installation or removal will be billed to the artist directly. d. ASI will not assume responsibility for any damages to artwork during installation or through the exhibition. e. The exhibit will be open to the campus community within the approved USU operating hours. f. The USU Program Coordinator is responsible for scheduling and contracting exhibitions throughout the year. Artists will be required to sign ASI service agreements. g. There is not an exhibition fee to CSULB artists to show their work. h. By submitting work to be considered for the exhibition, artists grant ASI the right to use their image(s) and the image of their art for the purpose of marketing. i. All work must remain on exhibit throughout the entire duration of the exhibition. No early withdrawals will be permitted. j. ASI reserves the right to cancel an exhibition, extend deadlines, or change exhibition dates if necessary. Criteria and Conditions Artwork is not limited to the subject matter, but must be in congruence with the University Student Union and Associated Students mission. 5 collection must promote an appreciation and understanding of the visual arts for the university. The following criteria will be utilized by the USU Programs Evaluation Committee in selecting collections to exhibit in the USU Art Gallery: A. CSULB student collections B. Artwork from emerging artists representing all media including painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, photography, digital art and mixed media C. The condition of object(s) D. The ability of the University Student Union to provide for the exhibit physical constraints including storage, protection and preservation of the object(s) E. The sophistication and completion of the artwork F. The exhibition meets the gallery s purpose G. The art encourages healthy debate and dialogue H. The art will not be perceived as vulgar or offensive to the campus community and guests of the University Student Union I. The art is durable and resistant to vandalism The Process: A. The Program Coordinator may facilitate a gallery-initiated exhibit. A gallery-initiated exhibit is defined as an exhibit the USUBOT Programs Evaluation Committee acquires through a call for artists with a specific theme or direction for an exhibition. B. The Program coordinator may receive an artist-initiated exhibit. Artists may submit proposals of potential exhibition so long as it falls within the appropriate timeline. The proposal must include information about the artist, theme and a prospectus about the exhibit. C. The Program Coordinator will submit all applications to the USUBOT Programs Evaluation Committee for review and approval. D. The Programs Evaluation Committee will review applications approximately 3 times a year and select art exhibitions during the following months: a. February for Summer selection b. April for Fall selection c. November for Spring selection E. The artist and Program Coordinator will meet no less than 60 days prior to the exhibit opening to review the terms and deadlines of the contract and insurance requirements. F. All service agreements, contracts and insurance must be submitted prior to the USU installation into the gallery. The University Student Union Board of Trustees has the final authority for approving exhibits and reserves the right to prohibit any person from displaying artwork.
