Warm Up: Using your periodic table, answer the following quetsions 1. Element 21's state 2. Number of metalloids 3. Number of liquids 4. Element 4 is a metal/nonmetal/metalloid. 5. Order from least to greatest: solid, liquid gas. 6. Number of nonmetals 7. Names of the liquids: 8. Names of the elements that are nonmetals and solids 9. Number of elements that are nonmetals and gasses 10. Order from least to greatest: metal, nonmetal, metalloid 11. Element 1 is a and has the state 12. The names of calcium's 4 neighbors are 13. Location of most gasses on the periodic table 14. Element 14 is a and has the state 15. Percent of solid metals on the periodic table 16. Location of most nonmetals on the periodic table is 17. Location of the metalloids 18. Location of most metals on the periodic table 19. Osmium's neighbors are 20. List of all the things located on each individual square
Using the Periodic Table to Determine Atomic Structure Helium Atom Lithium Hydrogen
Big Goal: Look at any tile on the periodic table, and be able to draw the number of protons, neutrons and electrons on each. What you need to know: 1. The element symbols for most of the elements. 2. What the atomic number is and stands for. 3. What the atomic mass is and stands for. 4. The charges and locations of protons, neutrons and electrons. 5. The orbital shells of electrons and valence electrons. 6. Atomic mass, neutrons and isotopes
A Closer Look: The Elements' Symbols Notice that the symbol is either ONE CAPITAL LETTER like C for Carbon or O for Oxygen OR, its two letters ONE CAPITOL and ONE lowercase like silver (my favorite element...) is Ag. Aluminum is Al. Each little box in the periodic table has the same parts to it. Each element has a SYMBOL an easier way of describing it. Many times its the \irst letter or two of the name but not always. Gold is Au. Potassium is K. Lead is Pb. Some of these names come from their latin instead of English. So, if I saw AuNNiSSe... how many elements is that? What about ClCHeHCuC?
How to Say the Elements Listen to this song: The Elements Song By Tom Lehrer There's antimony, arsenic, aluminum ( ) selenium, And hydrogen( ) and oxygen( ) and nitrogen( )and rhenium, And nickel,( ) neodymium, neptunium, germanium, And iron,( ) americium, ruthenium, uranium, Europium, zirconium, lutetium, vanadium, And lanthanum and osmium and astatine and radium, And gold( ) and protactinium and indium and gallium, And iodine( )and thorium and thulium and thallium. There's yttrium, ytterbium, actinium, rubidium, And boron, gadolinium, niobium, iridium, And strontium and silicon and silver( ) and samarium, And bismuth, bromine, lithium,( ) beryllium, and barium. There's holmium and helium( ) and hafnium and erbium, And phosphorus ( )and francium and fluorine( ) and terbium, And manganese and mercury,( ) molybdenum, magnesium,( ) Dysprosium and scandium and cerium and cesium. And lead,( ) praseodymium, and platinum,( ) plutonium, Palladium, promethium, potassium,( ) polonium, And tantalum, technetium, titanium,( ) tellurium, And cadmium and calcium( ) and chromium and curium. There's sulfur, californium, and fermium, berkelium, And also mendelevium, einsteinium, nobelium, And argon, krypton, neon,( ) radon( ) xenon, zinc,( ) and rhodium, And chlorine,( )carbon,( )cobalt,( )copper,( ) tungsten,( ) tin, ( )and sodium.( ) These are the only ones of which the news has come to Havard, And there may be many others, but they haven't been discavard. 1. Put the symbol for all of the underlined elements in ( ) 2. What pattern do you hear?
A Closer Look: Atomic Number and Atomic Mass In each box, there are also two numbers. If we compare them, what do you notice about the top number compared to the bottom number? The top number is what we call the ATOMIC NUMBER. The bottom number, we call the ATOMIC MASS. Atomic Number Element Symbol Whole name of element Atomic Mass
Atomic Number and Atomic Mass Atomic Number Think of this as the element's jersey, if it was a basketball player. Think of it as a lucky number. Element Symbol Whole name of element Atomic Mass Think of this as HOW BIG the player is. How MASSIVE is he/she? How much SPACE does he/she take up? It will be about DOUBLE the number each time! "And heeeere's Carbon! Number 6 is \ired up and ready to go! Weighing in at a little over 12, this element is light, and fast. Watch him as the action starts..."
Atomic Number Element Symbol Whole name of element Atomic Mass Have you heard of the word "massive"? What does it mean to be massive? What patterns do you notice between the atomic number and the atomic mass?
Practice Finding the Symbol, Atomic Number & Atomic Mass Element Name Element Symbol Atomic # Atomic Mass Tin Gold Iron Potassium Selenium Boron Cobalt Helium Hydrogen Xenon Einsteinium Hg O Ba Na Ag Pb Ni N Sb Md Zirconium Zinc Here comes Carbon, Nicknamed C for short! Number 6 is weighing in tonight at only You will need to use your book to \ind the Atomic Mass! Iridium Tellurium
