1 LUDWIG-UHLAND-INSTITUT für Empirische Kulturwissenschaft der Universität Tübingen (Ludwig-Uhland-Department of European Ethnology / Empirical Cultural Science) The Discipline Empirische Kulturwissenschaft (Empirical Cultural Science (EKW)) evolve out of the tradition of Volkskunde (Folklore Studies); at other universities it goes by such names as European Ethnology, Cultural Anthropology or even still by Volkskunde. Research is done with the aid of sociological and historiographical tools on cultural phenomena of the present day as well as the recent past (modern era). The phenomena are investigated using ethnographic analyses (field work, observation, interviews, thick descriptions ) as well as the study of primary sources (cultural history). They are interpreted with respect to the larger social context using hermeneutic methods, always with a view to the interrelationships of culture, power and inequality as well as between global and local cultural developments (interculturalism; transnational ways of life). EKW sees culture as the permanent arrangement of rules and meanings, according to which groups and societies live together, communicate and also distinguish themselves from one another, how they deal with natural and cultural heritage and which image they themselves have of these relations. Students of EKW receive a quality education that combines intensive cultural analytical training with an orientation towards practical experience. It provides students a foundation for a wide variety of career possibilities. The Department The Ludwig-Uhland-Institut (LUI) für Empirische Kulturwissenschaft (Ludwig-Uhland- Department of Empirical Cultural Science) belongs to one of the oldest and most renowned universities in Germany. It is located in the heart of Tübingen and is housed in two buildings of the Tübinger Schloss (Tübingen Castle). The institute carries on an publishing house (TVV), owns an exhibition hall as well as numerous collections of textual, graphic, photographic, audio, video and material documents, which are used in teaching and research. 1
2 Since the 1960s, the Ludwig-Uhland-Department has gained much of its prominence under the leadership of Hermann Bausinger. The Department was one of the first in Germany to deal (self)critically with the discipline s past during National Socialism and in its orientation towards the social-scientific study of contemporary issues in the 1960s and 1970s. This has lead to a modernization of the discipline Volkskunde, its interdisciplinary and transnational openmess. Research and Teaching: Current Topics Culture and History of Everyday Life Intersocial and Intercultural Relations Popular and Mass Culture Regional Ethnography and Culture Analysis Cultural Relations within Europe Everyday World of Jews Migration Research Tourism Research Cultures of Knowledge Culture of Remembrance Visual Anthropology Material Culture Museum Studies Profile of the Professorships The department offers an original orientation in regard to the main research topics which are currently one of a kind in the academic community.
