1 Translation of the Fachprüfungsordnung Biologische Ozeanographie only the German version is legally binding! - Regulations for Qualifying Examinations (Ordinance) for the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at the Christian-Albrecht-University of Kiel for Students of Biological Oceanography ending with the degree Master of Science (M.Sc.) Biological Oceanography (Regulations for Qualifying Examinations in Biological Oceanography (1-subject)) Based on Section 52 Subsection 1 Sentence 1 of the University and College Act as amended and promulgated on 28 February 2007 (Law and Ordinance Gazette for Schleswig-Holstein, p. 184), the Convent of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences on 7 November 2007 issues the following ordinance: Contents: 1 Scope 2 Study objective, Purpose of the examination 3 Academic title 4 Admission to the Master degree program 5 Study organization 6 Academic year 7 Language of instruction and examination 8 Examination committee 9 Module examinations and module grades 10 Registration for examinations, examination periods 11 Additional requirements for the admission to examinations 12 Master thesis 13 Composition of the final grade 14 Coming into effect 1 Scope (1) In conjunction with the Regulations for Examination Procedure of the Christian- Albrecht-University of Kiel for students of the Bachelor and Master degree pro-grams (regulations for examination procedure), these regulations for qualifying examinations govern the studies in the subject Biological Oceanography at the Christian-Albrecht- University of Kiel. (2) They also apply to 1. all modules, which are exclusively parts of the study programs governed by these regulations for qualifying examinations, 2. all modules, which are a part of the study programs governed by these regulations for qualifying examinations and which are also parts of other study programs as exported modules, 3. all modules, which are exclusively part of other study programs as exported modules.

2 (3) For the admission to imported modules and the execution of the respective modules examination the corresponding regulations of the faculty offering such modules and module examination apply, inasmuch as these regulations do not pro-vide for otherwise. 2 Study objective, Purpose of the examination (1) The students should gain a fundamental understanding of the structure and function of marine ecosystems and of the human influences on these systems, a broad, interdisciplinary overview of the present state of the art and methods used in biological oceanography, and comprehensive skills for independently studying complex issues in a scientific manner within this field of research. (2) The Master degree program Biological Oceanography provides the possibility of gaining an advanced degree as career qualification. The degree shows that the candidate has gained comprehensive skills for independently researching in the field of biological oceanography. 3 Academic title The academic title, Master of Science (M.Sc.), is granted upon passing the Master examination. 4 Admission to the Master degree program Admission to the Master degree program is gained by passing a Bachelor examina-tion with at least 180 credit points in a study program in Biology, Natural Sciences, or Environmental Sciences (with an adequate proportion of instruction in Biology) span-ning at least three years at an institution of higher education in the federal Republic of Germany or at an equivalent foreign institution of higher education, or by passing a comparable degree examination. The following are to be taken into account as additional criteria of suitability: - the grade achieved in the Bachelor examination, at least good (2.5 according to the German grading scale); - the extent and professional orientation of previous knowledge, to be evidenced by successfully completed lessons and their grading; - good knowledge of English (details are governed by the regulations on qualifications for study), - personal details given in the application for selecting the subject and place of study.

3 5 Study organization The Master degree program has a regular period of study spanning four semesters. The study volume consists of approximately 25 semester periods per week in the first three semesters and approximately 600 hours of independent study. A total of 120 credit points, including 30 credit points for the Master thesis, are to be earned. 6 Academic year (1) The academic year applies to this study program. The courses for first-year stu-dents and other students in odd-numbered semesters of study are only offered in winter semester. (2) Enrolment in odd-numbered semesters of study is only possible in winter semes-ter. Enrolment in even-numbered semesters of study is only possible in summer semester. 7 Language of instruction and examination English is the language of instruction and examination. 8 Examination committee Notwithstanding Section 3 Subsection 2 Sentence 1 of the Regulations on Examina-tion Procedure, the examination committee is comprised of four members of the fac-ulty, a scientist, and a student. 9 Module examinations and module grades (1) The type and number of module examinations to be passed within the scope of the module are detailed in the Annex. (2) The duration of an examination is at least 30 minutes and no longer than five hours. (3) In the event that a module examination consists of multiple examinations, the module grade is calculated according to the arithmetic average of the grades for the individual examinations. The weighting is done in relationship to the credit points assigned to the course in which the examination is taken. (4) In the event that a module examination is conducted by multiple examiners, the grade will be determined mutually. The examination committee decides in the event of a disagreement. (5) Written module examinations will be graded within two weeks after the conclusion of the lecture period of the winter semester and within six weeks after conclusion of the lecture period of the summer semester.

4 10 - cancelled 11 Additional requirements for the admission to examinations (1) In the event that a module contains seminars, exercises, or excursions, active participation in these activities is a requirement for admission to the examinations. No more than three course dates may be missed without excuse. In the event that additional course dates are missed due to illness, however, at most 40% of all course dates, these can be made up by preparing a written assignment or an oral colloquium. (2) Additional requirements for admission to module examinations are detailed in the Annex. 12 Master thesis (1) Admission to the Master thesis is gained by earning at least 70 credit points in module examinations for mandatory and elective mandatory modules. (2) Together with the application for admission to the Master thesis, the examination candidate may suggest a topic to the examiner, although this does not establish any rights. (3) The Master thesis is due six months after the topic has been issued. An extension of this period in accordance with Section 11 Subsection 4 Sentence 5 of the Regulations on Examination Procedure for Bachelor and Master degree programs and may not exceed three months. (4) The topic of the Master thesis may be returned once within the first month. (5) The master thesis is to be defended in a scientific oral presentation with discus-sion. This part of examination has to be graded by the examiners jointly. (6) The written master thesis is to be graded by both examiners within six weeks after submission. (7) The overall master thesis grade results from 75% of the written form grade and 25% of the oral defence grade. (8) The Master thesis is to be submitted to the relevant examination authority in tripli-cate as well as in a form suitable for electronic data processing.

5 13 Composition of the final grade (1) The final grade is calculated according to the module grades correspondingly marked in the attached study curriculum as well as the written Master thesis weighted according to the credit points. (2) The overall grade of the master thesis is weighted double. 14 Coming into effect This ordinance comes into effect on the day after it is made public.
