Powell School for Civic and Global Leadership (formerly the Division of Social Science) The City College of New York Manhattan, New York Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost BACKGROUND/CULTURE The City College of New York The City College of the City University of New York (known more commonly as the City College of New York, City College or CCNY) is a senior college of the City University of New York (CUNY), in New York City. It is also the oldest of the City University's twenty-three institutions of higher learning. City College's thirty-five acre Manhattan campus along Convent Avenue from 130th Street to 141st Street is located on a hill in Harlem; many of its neo-gothic buildings are landmarks. The City College was the first free public institution of higher education in the United States and for many years has been the flagship campus of the City University of New York public university system. The City College itself has long been a university in reality, including four professional schools and programs that award a range from bachelor s through on-site CUNY doctoral degrees. Colleges and schools include the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences with its divisions of humanities and the arts, social science, science, and interdisciplinary studies; the Spitzer School of Architecture; the Grove School of Engineering; the Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education/CUNY Medical School; and the School of Education. CCNY s comprehensive engineering, architecture and biomedical education programs are unique within the City University. The College offers more than 115 undergraduate and graduate majors including doctoral degrees in biomedical, chemical, civil, electrical, and mechanical engineering. The College also offers Ph.D. degrees in biology, biochemistry, chemistry, physics and psychology jointly with the City University of New York s Graduate School and University Center. The College is known for its rigorous academic programs and the research activities of its faculty in such fields as structural biology, laser optics and spectroscopy, biomedical science and engineering, environmental science (climate change, remote sensing),

3 materials science and nanotechnology, energy systems, sustainability, neurosciences and translational addiction research. The City College has a large undergraduate research program with 350 students engaged in funded research, giving students the chance to work side by side with eminent scientists and mentors. CCNY Mission and Vision CCNY is dedicated to accessibility and excellence in undergraduate and graduate education. Requiring demonstrated potential for admission and a high level of accomplishment for graduation, the College provides a diverse student body with opportunities to achieve academically, creatively, and professionally in the liberal arts and sciences and in professional fields such as engineering, education, architecture, and biomedical education. The College is committed to fostering student-centered education and advancing knowledge through scholarly research. 4 The Colin L. Powell School for Civic and Global Leadership (Powell School) was inaugurated on May 2, Named for a CCNY alumnus of extraordinary national and international accomplishment, the Powell School expands this legacy in a transformative way. General Powell, a member of The City College of New York Class of 1958, is the first African American to serve as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and U.S. Secretary of State. The creation of the Powell School integrates the work of The Colin Powell Center for Leadership and Service, the leadership and public policy center at CCNY with the strong tradition of teaching and scholarship in the Division of Social Science. The Center, established in 1997, is recognized as a leader in creating service-learning and public scholarship opportunities for students and faculty. To-date, over $40 million has been raised for the School. The core mission of the Powell School will be to build leaders for the common good, strengthen connections between campus and communities, and promote civic engagement at City College and beyond. It will expand the number of students and faculty members able to benefit from a successful model of making experiential learning, leadership training, and commitments to public service a cornerstone of one s academic career. A unit of the College of Liberal Arts and Science, the Powell School comprises five academic departments (Anthropology, Economics, Sociology, Political Science, and Psychology), six interdisciplinary programs (International Studies, International Relations, Latin American and Latino Studies, Pre-Law, Public Service Management, and Women s Studies) and the Skadden Arps Honors Program in Legal Studies. In addition, the Division houses the Dominican Studies Institute. The School offers undergraduate degrees in all of its departments as well as in Latino Studies, International Studies, and Pre-Law. Master s degree programs are offered in Economics, International Relations, Counseling Psychology, Sociology, Psychology and Public Administration. In addition, the City University of New York Ph.D. program in Clinical Psychology is housed at City College. Social Science faculty members contribute to a number of other doctoral programs located at the CUNY Graduate School and University Center. The School includes 90 full-time faculty members who teach 1,999 undergraduate and 309 graduate students. The student body is among the most diverse in the country, and the atmosphere in the School is supportive and informal. Faculty provide outstanding teaching and mentoring with a student-friendly style; the School also offers peer mentors to all incoming undergraduate students and coordinates frequent community-building events for students at all levels.

5 THE POSITION CCNY and the Powell School are at an important point in the College s history and for the first Dean of the Powell School. For the first time, The Princeton Review added CCNY to its roster of the nation s best colleges in 2012; the prestigious selection earned CCNY a place in The Princeton Review s annual Best Colleges guidebook, which features the top 15% of the four-year colleges in the nation. CCNY seeks an exceptional individual to serve as its first Dean of Powell School. As the chief academic officer for the Powell School, the Dean will set the standard for intellectual engagement and accomplishment, provide strategic vision and operational leadership to all aspects of the academic and scholarly programs, and create an environment and community that support the Powell School s faculty and students. In particular, the Dean will assure that the Powell School serves its students with academic programs of the highest quality and effectiveness, promoting excellence as well as diversity in undergraduate and graduate degree programs. In concert with the faculty, the Dean will be responsible for student and faculty recruitment, retention, and diversity. Supporting the Powell School s mission, the Dean will promote opportunities to advance the scholarly activities of the faculty and, when appropriate, work to establish new programs, including the opportunities that interdisciplinary approaches afford through partnerships with other academic units both within and outside the College. The Dean will serve as the principal steward for the Powell School s resources faculty, staff, and students and will oversee the Powell School s budget and facilities. With responsibility for the Powell School s share of the College s campaign, the Dean will work closely with the Office of the Vice President for Institutional Advancement and will take a leading role in attracting external funding from federal agencies, corporations, foundations and interested donors to support the Powell School s mission. The Dean will represent the Powell School broadly, serving as emissary and advocate to both internal and external constituencies. The Dean will have the opportunity to guide the Powell School in a number of key areas. In particular, the Dean will: along with department chairs, assure the continued prominence of the faculty by prioritizing the recruiting and retention of distinguished faculty at all levels, with a particular focus on diversity; support the continued academic achievement and success of the students, many of whom are first-generation college students, by assuring their access to classes needed to graduate in a timely way and supporting financial aid; promote and support a strong research agenda; define and execute a strategic vision for the future by articulating the distinctive needs and opportunities of the Powell School in College and University strategic

6 planning processes and by leading from within by consensus and with transparency; maintain financial stability by developing a plan to address the challenges and opportunities of the Powell School, with an increased autonomy for budget management and discretionary fund allocation but still within the constraints of a public institution; lead the development of new resources under the auspices of CCNY s campaign, with an ability to clearly communicate the complex ideas of science; serve as a public voice for the Powell School s faculty, staff and students, bringing a heightened level of visibility. identify opportunities in emerging areas for new programs and interdisciplinary initiatives; create a more robust administrative structure to facilitate strategic planning and data-driven decision- making; and explore ways to strengthen CCNY s leadership role in Ph.D. programs, including the possibility of independent recruitment and curriculum delivery at the doctoral level. Reporting to the provost, the Dean will work collaboratively with the president, vice presidents and department chairs at City College and with counterparts across the City University of New York. In particular, the Dean will work closely with the other CCNY deans to forge positive relationships and pursue common interests in support of the College s institutional priorities. PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS The successful candidate will be an energetic, self-assured scholar with administrative experience, able to inspire the faculty and students with a sense of pride and purpose and infuse the Powell School and its programs with the highest quality. Compelling candidates will possess: the ability, in conjunction with the faculty and the Division s other administrative leaders, to articulate and build consensus for a vision for the Powell School and to develop and realize a plan to achieve it; the ability to provide creative and distinctive academic leadership to the Powell School and its programs, exercising extraordinary academic judgment, and continually seeking opportunities to advance academic excellence; a commitment to supporting and cultivating a distinguished, accomplished and diverse faculty, and the experience to do so; deep respect for and engagement with students, coupled with a commitment to attract the strongest of them, preserving and extending their diversity at both undergraduate and graduate levels; clear appreciation for and demonstrated commitment to gender equity among

7 faculty and students; the intellectual leadership and curiosity to provide guidance to a robust research program; the willingness to oversee, with the faculty, curriculum development of the Powell School, and to monitor its delivery to students at both undergraduate and graduate levels; a demonstrated commitment to cross-disciplinary programs; the ability to lead sophisticated and effective development and fund raising activities; the ability to articulate the Powell School s vision, goals, accomplishments and needs to a broad range of external constituencies, including alumni, academic, cultural and social institutions, and the business and industrial communities; experience in managing growth and change, resolving conflict, and building consensus, demonstrating a willingness to seize opportunities, while assuming responsibility for appropriate risks; strong management and organizational skills; and a strong record of college or university leadership, with an ability to work collaboratively with other deans, and the capacity to serve as an advocate for the Powell School in the College and University context. EDUCATION The College seeks a person with an earned doctorate or equivalent terminal degree with a record of major scholarship, research, and teaching, suitable for appointment as a tenured full professor.
