DESCRIPTION This course is designed to take full advantage of the student's unique experiences living and studying in the city of Florence. With on-site inspiration channeled into artistic creativity, students will draw on location at sites of historical significance and visual interest ranging from architectural masterpieces, landscape vistas and medieval streets to formal gardens, street markets and Renaissance fountains. Slide lectures will document the rich history of how Florence and its environs have attracted and inspired visiting artists for centuries. Students will develop individual sketchbooks with the aim of building up source material for future projects. Instructor s Note: This course explores drawing from an expressive and experimental point of view. The process of drawing will enable students to focus on creative thinking that uses information to address concepts and ideas about every day experiences. The typical characteristics of drawing will be highlighted, including lines, points, shadows, space and expression. These aspects of drawing will be explored for their expressive, representational, and didactic qualities. Students will visit the FUA Library frequently and extensively to discover the drawings of numerous contemporary artists, as well as to gain fundamental ideas and inspiration in the development studio work and a personal sketchbook. Drawing, as the most immediate way to transcribe one s ideas, is the basis for all artistic procedures; often roughdraft drawings have an invaluable freshness and immediate expressiveness, indispensable in the development of concepts and projects. The course will end with a presentation of the completed portfolio in digital format. EVALUATION GRADING SYSTEM Attendance 10% Class Participation- 20% Midterm Exam 15%

Final Review and Critique 35% Papers: 10% Final Portfolio: 10% A detailed explanation of this breakdown is found below in Section 11 (, Term Papers and Exams). A = %, A- = 90-92%, B+ = 87-89%, B = 83-86%, B- = 80-82%, C+ = 77-79%, C = 73-76%, C- = 70-72%, D = 60-69%, F = 0-59%, W = Official Withdrawal, W/F = Failure to withdraw by the designated date. 10. ATTENDANCE PARTICIPATION Academic integrity and mutual respect between instructor and students are central to Palazzi s academic policies. This is reflected in the attendance policy. Class attendance is mandatory and counts towards the final grade. Roll will be taken at the beginning and end of each class. Coming late and leaving earlier affects the attendance and participation grade. It is important that students come to class on time. Two delays will be considered one absence. Each absence from class will negatively impact your final grade (Attendance). After the second absence the instructor will notify the student is at risk. After the third absence the instructor may lower the final grade by one letter grade at the end of the term. (Example: 90/A- = B-) After the fourth absence the student will receive an automatic failure. It is always the student's responsibility to know how many absences they have in a course. Travel is NEVER an excuse for absence from class. A positive grade in participation will be the result of many elements, such as - the completion of the six hours minimum preparation time including: - the study the readings before coming to class, - completion of homework assignments - cooperation during group work - being responsible - taking care of your classroom - switching off all your electronic devices (both during lectures and visits). - No eating is allowed. Please use your time before class and during the break for this purpose if necessary. - It is forbidden to use the rest breaks provided to models to check /internet indefinitely Remember that for the completion of the course you are required to attend at least 3 mandatory Arty Fridays, which take place on Fridays. Check the calendar available from the school. In case you do not fulfill this assignment, your participation grade will be reduced of 30% (that is: an A- 90, will become a D 63). 11. EXAMS PAPER Note: the date and time of the exams cannot be changed for any reason. Students not attending the exam day will receive an F as relative grade for the exam. : During the session of the mid-term exam, professor will check all students' work and progress of the course and up to date. Homework assignments are an integral part of this course and are therefore mandatory. The grading of the following is totalling 100 points:

grading of homework up to the mid-term exam a. Technical exercises: 1) marking and shading of 6 gradations from dark to light using pencils H HB 2B 4B 6B. Create the scale so that one end has an absolute black and the other end is absolutely white and the remaining spaces are also step from one level to the next. 2) Draw 5 different simple objects + background using different kind of marks with the pencils. (Use a natural light from a window or electric light, to create a strong contrast) b. One point perspective room: Draw a view of your room with one vanishing point with pencil in your sketchbook c. Two point perspective central station S.Maria Novella: Draw a view of central station with two vanishing points with pencil in your sketchbook d. Piazza Indipendenza details: Draw three different details of a natural texture, leaf trunk, and cobblestone on your sketchbook with different lines e. Ink wash drawings: Create a minimum of 5 drawings of landscapes, details, and city view in your sketchbook with ink and quill wash and line. Midterm exam: During the session of the mid-term exam, professor will check all students' work created to date as a measure of the student s progress (see above). The mid-term exam is divided into 2 parts totalling 100 points, including a written part of short answer questions based on readings, class discussions, and visits; and on a practical exercise (see below): Exam drawing. Students will draw the perspective landscape using combined media on paper, 35x50 cm, wet and dry technique. Final Project and Critique : This will encompass all work done during the course (sketchbook) plus the final project, a visual portfolio comprehending a series of sketches and a final elaboration and a paper. The grading of the final project and critique will be divided into 4 sections totalling 100 points: Project presentation and exposition (20 points), Correspondence of the project to the requested assignment (10 points), Graphic, Stylistic, and Technical Quality (50 points), and the completion of a final paper (20 points). Students will be expected to present the following for evaluation during a group class critique: 1) A final project consisting of either: (a) 1 drawing, or a series of drawings, inspired by the work of a chosen artist, or; (b) a detail from the city with a background created or invented by the student. 2) A final paper consisting of the following: (a) art historical information relevant to the final project; (b) inspirational references; (c) a short artists statement.(see information below) 3) Each student s personal sketchbook, plus four of their best finished drawings done. Students are expected to formulate their ideas verbally during their presentation, to respond to feedback in an engaged and receptive way, and to participate during the critiques of others. Evaluations will also respond to improvements in technical and formal ability and the student s effort and positive approach towards self-improvement through project work.

Written papers The two Papers count for 10% of the final course grade. - Written paper 1 on an architect from Renaissanc period and concentrates in particular on one of his works that most interest you in Florence. The Paper counts for 5% of the final course grade. Titles must be confirmed by the professor. Professor will also consider individual suggestions made by students. The paper is a research paper that should demonstrate the ability of the students to carry on an independent study about an artist. The student will choose the topic and confirm it with the professor. The paper should be five pages long, typed, double spaced. Material for research will be available at FUA library, but students are strongly advised to exploit the primary artistic sources in the gardens and work on site. The student is also required to place pictures (photocopies) or whatever images are necessary to better explain the topic. Bibliography: at least three books are required. Please make sure that the Paper includes a bibliography. What is important is the depth of the research and personal re-elaboration of the information that you have found. You should be able to explain the subject and critical problems relating to it, finding answers to the following questions: What are the characteristics of the artist and his historical importance? The reason of is work? What does it represent? Why is it important?. Report them and then say which seems to you to be the most convincing and explain why. Report also your personal sensations, observations and considerations to try to understand better the work of the artist and to personalize your paper. Remember that at the end of the paper you must write a bibliography of the books that you have used (author, title of the book, year published) also Internet sites you have consulted. A paper without a bibliography will be will be given a very low grade. Ps: Do not copy word for word other texts (it is easy to recognize!), but try to explain the other person s ideas in your own words citing your source. Remember that illustrations (photocopies, postcards, photos taken by you) of the works of art that you mention are a very important addition to any paper of art history, and they contribute to the idea of paper written with concern and care. The professor is always glad to discuss with the students the problems that they have in choosing the subject, finding the bibliography and organizing the work. The professor is also very happy to give advice of any kind, but will not tell the student which subject to choose, which bibliography to use, etc..., otherwise it would not be a personal project. Written paper 2. The completion of the final paper counts for 5% of the final course grade. Students will be asked to write the paper dealing from Lo schermo dell Arte with an artist s statement containing information about the creative process regarding the project. The length should be at least five A4 pages, including images if necessary. Final portfolio The Final Portfolio is the evidence of your practices, processes and achievements during the course, and it will be evaluated according to how accurate these are reported. It must comprehend your statements, goals and achievements, as well as the procedures and the issues to reach those. By the end of the course you must hand in the digital portfolio, complete with photos of your works, measurements, techniques, as well as the aforementioned short written statements. The portfolio will be done in Power Point (if you are strong other programs, such as IPhotos, you are welcome to use those). You will hand it in a digital file saved in Pdf. The first page (or slide) has to have the following information: Name of the School, including logo. (School of Fine Arts. Logo will be supplied by your professor)

Department of. (Department of Education, Department of Ceramics etc ) Code and exact title of the course Name of the Professor Name of the Lab Assistant Name of the Student Term and Academic Year Be sure to constantly record the advancements of you work, and to update your presentation weekly, by taking pictures of your work in different phases. As you know, power point files are extremely manageable, since slides can be easily moved, checked and removed. The Final Portfolio is the fundamental assignment for all studio art course, and for this reason highly graded. 12.
