RATIONALE Selection and preparation in music education at Florida State University is based upon an important yet extremely simple premise--it is, that every person involved as a learner ought to have the best instruction possible. This premise implies that every teacher ought to be committed to the subject of music and its use with people. The strength of this commitment is evidenced by the academic and social behaviors of the prospective teacher in life, both in and out of the university environment, and is characterized by diligence in the pursuit of musical and academic excellence and active dedication to the improvement of the quality of life. For those who value knowledge, the learning process is perpetual throughout life s time. To be an effective music educator, one must develop: The ability to think, and therefore, value and discriminate The ability to feel, and therefore, become sensitive to aesthetic qualities in music and life The courage to act, and therefore, translate those abilities to think and feel into overt behaviors Successful music educators evidence personal qualities of leadership, intellectual curiosity, and social commitment. They approach life, music, and the teaching profession in a positive, imaginative, and
enthusiastic way. The music teacher attempts to create a respect and desire for musical experiences, teaching people to react positively, listen responsively, and participate in a musically sensitive manner by providing a variety of musical experiences for those who will be consumers of music and those who will be music professionals. GOALS Toward this goal, music educators are stimulated by current research in music to seek, evaluate, and appropriately implement current ideas and developments in teaching music. They promote positive relationships with students, colleagues, and others. They are empathetic with people of differing social and ethnic backgrounds, and demonstrate mature attitudes and values in the operation of the instructional program. Teachers consistently maximize student opportunities and accomplishments, and minimize self-aggrandizement and teacher dominance. Their public performances are part of instructional programs geared to helping students become sensitive to aesthetic elements in music. VALUES Music specialists must be prepared and eager to teach music to every child: the poor, ethnic minorities, children of the inner cities, the handicapped, and the highly gifted. SKILLS Musicians are most successful as teachers if they understand
current structures, systems, and practices in education. Concurrently, the music educator in this age of educational change and accountability must be able to express knowledge of teaching and learning, through verbal communication (oral and written) and through overt, demonstrable music and teaching behaviors. A general knowledge and understanding of history, science, art, philosophy, and communication serves to enhance one's ability to function effectively in contemporary society and facilitates greater understanding of the human condition. The final report of the Music Educators' National Conference on "Teacher Education in Music" states that general education should: help the student understand him/herself as a person assist in the development of positive attitudes and penetrating insights toward others and the world, encourage acceptance of change and enable the student to approach new ideas with an open mind provide the ability to apply appropriate evaluative techniques and establish an attitude of curiosity, and provide another dimension for the pre-service music educator by helping the student relate his/her own art to other related disciplines. The task of structuring and managing a musical environment in which individuals, regardless of ability level, may positively experience, successfully achieve, and hence, come to value the art of music, demands a breadth of knowledge and skills, as well as high levels of perception and sensitivity on the part of the music educator. The acquisition and development of these abilities requires an intellectual commitment that is realized in daily living and is maintained and strengthened during the years of training and throughout the professional career.
The music education faculty at the Florida State University College of Music is dedicated to the pursuit of these goals, both for themselves and for their students. SUMMER MASTERS PROGRAM Florida State University College of Music is pleased to offer the summer-only program that meets the needs of musicians in school, and community. All degree requirements are completed in three (3) summers by taking a grand total of 34 credit hours. Accommodation can be made for those desiring part time enrollment, though graduation cannot occur until degree completion. Master of Music Education The summer Master of Music Education program provides authentic graduate study designed to prepare master teachers who will grow in musical, pedagogical, and leadership aspects of the music teaching profession. Master of Arts in Choral Music [IN PREPARATION] The Master of Arts degree, intended for persons without teacher certification, allows graduate study within special focus areas, thus choral church musicians may build a Master of Arts degree in a threesummer program that co-exists with the music education program.
PROGRAM ADMISSION Admission to the Summer Master of Music Education is open to any certified music teacher who meets Florida State University graduate school requirements. Entrance Requirements: DEADLINE: MARCH 1 Teaching Certificate (music education only) Graduate Application, Music and FSU Official Transcript Writing Sample Letters of Recommendation Meet GPA requirements Approval by Summer Masters Committee For additional information on admissions procedures and requirements please contact the Music Admissions Office, directly, at (850) , or [email protected].
PROFICIENCY EXAMINATIONS ALL students must take and pass a Proficiency Exam that measures basic undergraduate understandings of music theory. This requirement can be met in several ways: a. Arrive on campus for orientation and take the exam (generally offered on Friday before classes begin on Monday). b. Register for a review WORKSHOP, offered by the COM during the week prior to classes beginning, designed to provide intensive review and test preparation. The Proficiency Exam will be given on Friday afternoon of that week. Any student who fails the test may take it (and the workshop, if desired) again the following summer. Another option for those who do not pass is to arrange for taking a review class at another university during the year for transfer to FSU (see Lauren Smith for procedures). The one variable that is nonnegotiable is that ALL STUDENTS MUST TAKE AND PASS THE PROFICIENCY TEST OR TAKE REVIEW CLASSES (NOT built in to the 3 summer schedule). For the summer-only masters, the voice audition is waived for admission and addressed as a competency at the conclusion of the degree. Choral conducting tapes are not required for admission. All students conduct the University Chorale, but this occurs during the second summer of study, thus diagnostic tapes are unnecessary for the first summer.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS Ten credits (10) of other studies in music (including history/theory) are required, as recommended by NASM, and students have choices, but at least 2 hours must be taken in both history and theory (music education requirement). Summer 3 is taught at the FSU London campus, with Dr. Cliff Madsen and Dr. Andre Thomas serving as faculty. All are encouraged to pursue this option, as you will not experience either faculty member except in London. Should a student choose not to register for London, that person may attend FSU Tallahassee and take whatever appropriate hours are available, including the transfer of up to six (6) hours from another graduate institution. [A total of six hours may be transferred for ANY reason, including review classes. Transfer credit must be handled through the Graduate Music Office. Please contact Lauren Smith, directly, with any questions you may have concerning transfer credit hours.] FINANCIAL AID And HOUSING Degree-seeking students qualify for federal financial aid. Of primary importance is applying for an award of funds during the proper
year and clarification that summer is the desired award semester. For applications and assistance, please contact the Student Financial Aid website: Office of Financial Aid Florida State University Office of Financial Aid A-4400 University Center Tallahassee, FL Housing is available on campus for individuals in a graduate dorm or for families at Alumni Village. On-line application is available at The Off-Campus Housing Office, a student government funded agency, serves as an information center, assisting students who seek offcampus housing, apartments, and private residence halls.
