2 PRESENTATION OF THE PROJECT BASIC PROJECT DATA: Title: Pilot Plant for Complete Ergy Recovery of Different Municipal and Livetock Wate Material and By-Product. Acronym: METABIORESOR Location: CGR (Center for Wate Management) of Barranco Hondo, Lorca (Spain). Funding: LIFE+ programme, 2008 call. IFIP (Intitut du Porc, Francia) UPCT (Technical Univerity of Cartagena, Spain) ALIA (Feed Cooperative of Lorca, Spain) INAPORC (Inter-profeional Pork Organiation, France) AIMS OF THE PROJECT Thi project aim to achieve the complete ergy recovery of a erie of municipal and livetock by-product and other organic wate gerated in the communal area of Lorca (Spain), demontrating innovative approache, technologie and method for ergy recovering. Currently, the management of thee organic by-product and wate repreent a high cot for variou ector: The City Council ha to manage pruning and garden debri, cull wood, ewage ludge from urban watewater, etc. Livetock farmer, who mut find a olution to the management of pig manure and carcae. Agro-food indutrie uch a laughterhoue have alo to manage animal blood and hair, among other. Moreover, all thee organic by-product and wate are a eriou environmental problem, ince they repreent large volume that, beide being little or not at all recovered for mot of them, normally end up (with the exception of pig manure) in a landfill or have to be treated by an authorized agent. METABIORESOR ha developed a novel proce that can treat all thee wate by tranforming them to le than 2% of their initial amount (1000 kg of wate i reduced to le than 20 kg of ah), reducing by arly 80% CO2 emiion aociated with the management of thi kind of wate and, moreover, gerating ergy in the proce. 3 THE GENERAL OUTLINE OF THE PROCESS IS AS FOLLOWS: Feedtock to be ued: Slaughterhoue wate and animal carcae: to be hydrolyed (at origin or in plant). Pig manure and ewage ludge: which are mixed with the preceding hydrolyate, then cruhed, homogenized and hygienied. After hygieniing the mixture, it i fed to the biodigeter. The bioga produced at thi tage goe to a bioga burr, where heat ergy i gerated in order to heat the digeter and the hygienier. On the other hand, digetate from the biodigeter are partially dehydrated and paed to a blender. Pruning and garden debri: which are hredded/chipped and go to the blender, where they meet the above-mentiod dehydrated digetate. The reulting mixture i fed to a pelletizer, where it i tranformed into pellet or granule that feed a bioma boiler that produce heat ergy for the water boiler. The boiler i heated by the ergy produced in the bioma boiler, while the water come from the dryer and from a tank that collect rainwater. For it part, the water boiler upplie hot water to the dryer. page 3 Newletter 1

4 INNOVATIONS OF THE METABIORESOR PROJECT The deign of thi project include many innovation, both in it approach and in the ue of ome equipment at prototype tage. It can be globally conidered a a leading technological innovation. The main innovation are: A) The hydrolyzation of pig carcae and laughterhoue wate (e.g. boiled blood and hair). The ytem of dipoal of carcae and other organic wate through hydrolyzation with bio-activator i a variant of the anaerobic digetion and o of the mot rational and economical method for their elimination. Thi hydrolyi i carried out in watertight tank at meophile temperature, heated by olar ergy (thermal plate). B) The biomethanation proce to be ued in thi project i called co-digetion and it work with a mix of divere fermentation feedtock. In thi project we expect to tet w feedtock in a co-digetion proce that will be baed on liquid manure and ewage ludge combid with thoe w material, an innovation with repect to the mono-digetion ytem commonly ued o far. can be do in the future, the bioga produced could be ued for the operation of a motor uitable for thi type of fuel that would drive an electricity gerator, including a ytem for recovering the heat ergy produced (i.e. a combid cycle plant) which will increae the ergy efficiency of the ytem. C) A w drying treatment of the digetate from biomethanation, with low ergy cot thank to a vacuum evaporation ytem. D) Digetate partially dehydrated will be mixed with pruning debri and cull wood, then fily ground, and the reultant product will be pelletized and then burnt in an appropriate bioma boiler. Thi proce of biomethanation i expected to produce a higher amount of bioga that will be tored in a gaometer, waiting to be burd for heating a water boiler. 5 EXPECTED RESULTS OF THE PROJECT 1 Reduction of the wate tream to landfill by recycling all organic material and recovering their ergy in the form of bioga and biofuel. 2 Reduction of environmental pollution: Minimizing proce wate (<2% of the initial amount): 1000 kg of wate i reduced to le than 20 kg of ah. Reducing carbon emiion (77 89%). 3 The METABIORESOR pilot plant will produce ergy (bioga and fuel) 4 With the volume and type of wate gerated in Lorca, and on a commercial-cale plant, we could obtain about t of optimal mix with which to achieve: Electrical ergy production for more than home. Thermal ergy production of almot MW. Freeing up more than 3 million litre of water. And only about 50 ton of ahe a final wate.
