1 Reearch Programme of the Academy of Finland KITARA The Application of Information Technology in Mechanical, Civil and Automation Engineering
2 The Application of Information Technology in Mechanical, Civil and Automation Engineering (KITARA) KITARA in brief The mechanical engineering and contruction cluter make a major contribution to the Finnih national economy. There exit internationally competitive applied know-how in thee field, but the extent and coverage of baic reearch hould be expanded and the infratructure of cientific reearch trengthened. However, Finland ha world-leading know-how in ICT, and the incorporation of that expertie in mechanical, civil and automation engineering would give a trong competitive edge in the global marketplace. The new knowledge generated in the reearch programme will provide a platform for the indutry applied reearch and innovative olution.. Aim of the Reearch Programme The aim of the reearch programme i to trengthen baic reearch expertie in the field of mechanical, civil and automation engineering through the application of information and communication technologie. The programme will upport the development of new multidiciplinary reearch group and national and international network of cooperation. In keeping with the trategie of different actor within the mechanical engineering and contruction cluter and the funding bodie involved, cooperation will be aimed at trengthening and diverifying baic reearch and tying it in more cloely with thee branche development viion. Subject area: information and communication technologie that upport deign, manufacture and ue information and communication technologie incorporated in the product life-cycle management and it networking in buine companie and ytem information and communication technologie that upport interaction between uer and building/machine and the changing environment of ue 1. Information and communication technologie that upport deign, manufacture and ue: Information technology ha become an important tool in the deign of product, procee and ervice. Product modelling, proce imulation and the
3 Development Proce for Networked Control Sytem in a Mobile Working Machine incorporation of life-cycle factor in the deign proce help to create greater coherence between deign, proce and maintenance and by the ame token to improve overall manageability. Information technology can help to improve both the quality and peed of deign. Virtual prototype can be ued to tet variou application cenario without needing to build mechanical prototype or cale model. The information network allow for geographically decentralied deign. The joint online ue of imulation model decribing different apect of a machine or building open up new opportunitie, but i alo very challenging. 2. Information and communication technologie incorporated in the product: In the future, information technology will be incorporated a an integral part of the product, adding new feature and ue and making the product eaier to ue. More and more, uer will require of machine and production ytem an ability to adapt to variable, rapidly changing, unpredictable ituation. Diagnotic and prognotic are key feature of product and ytem that have the capacity to learn and adapt to variable ituation. Meaurement data can be tranlated in real-time into corrective action in order to eliminate or prevent fault and malfunction. 3. Life-cycle management and it networking in buine companie and ytem: Information and communication technologie have a key role to play in life-cycle management. Management of the life-cycle of building i a real etate buine that i undertaken in practice by an extenive network of buine companie and ytem. Feature can be incorporated in product and ervice that through their life-cycle efficiency add ignificantly to productivity and create completely new innovation. Information and communication technologie make it
4 MRI-combatible Surgical Robot Ue of ICT 3D Meauring Technique for High Quality Contruction poible to modify a product or production ytem during it life-cycle, to improve it propertie or add or activate new feature by mean of oftware modification or plug-in that can be upplied online. The change required and opportunitie offered by the information and ervice ociety in the life-cycle management of the exiting built environment will be even greater than thoe een in the contruction proce. Information and communication technologie will alo allow for the integration of the data content concerning building production and building ue and thereby pave the way to trading baed on life-cycle feature. 4. Information and communication technologie that upport interaction between uer and building/machine and the changing environment of ue: In the interaction between man and building and between man, machine and the changing ue environment, information and communication technologie have a crucial role to play in proceing and repreenting information to uer in a readily intelligible format. Interaction aim at uer-friendly deign and an interface that adapt according to the end-ue or uer characteritic. The interaction can take place either in itu or via a remote connection. The main emphai in interaction i on divere uer interface. Photo: project of KITARA reearch programme, futureimagebank.com, photobanker.fi Layout: Sole Lätti Yliopitopaino, Helinki 2006
