Research Project GeoPortal Andreas Donaubauer Institute of Geodesy, GIS and Landmanagement, Prof. Schilcher of Munich of Munich
Contents 1. Project GeoPortal at the of Munich 2. Results of the Project: Market analysis in the local government sector Proof of Concept: Demonstrator GeoPortal Applications for local governments built on chained geo web services Results of an Evaluation Procedure 3. Conclusions of Munich 2
Project GeoPortal at the Technical University of Munich - Project started in June 2000 and ends in June Involved in the project are: - of Munich (Institute of Geodesy, GIS and Landmanangement, Institute of Informatics), member of the OGC - Bavarian Administration for Surveying and Cadastre (contracting authority, data provider) - Bavarian Ministry of the Environment (data provider) - Focus of the Project: - accessing existing, heterogeneous, distributed spatial databases by means of OGC Web s - develop applications composed of chained Web s for users and use cases in municipalities of Munich 3
Characteristics of the GeoPortal GeoPortal mediator between suppliers and users of data and services several suppliers of data and several suppliers of services access to distributed data of one or more suppliers GeoPortal does not store any geospatial data no storage of replications in user systems no obsolete data because of online-access to original data sources flexible, browser based applications can be generated by service chaining of Munich 4
Results of our Market Research focusing on local governments in Bavaria The market potential for GIS, Geodata and related services is about 150 million but this potential is unused to a large extent. Less than one third of the local governements use GIS. There are many datasources maintained by authorities and private dataproviders that could be useful for local governments. Many local governments neither have the financial nor the personnel resources for operating a GIS on their own. of Munich 5

Results of an evaluation procedure involving real world users querying existing distributed geodatabases of government organisations is sufficient for many use cases in municipalities performance is a key issue combination with local (geo) data of the user is important display of some metainformation is important for acceptance (Where is the data from? When was it collected?) of Munich 11
Conclusions: Where are the advantages? reduction of user effort use of GIS technology without installing and maintaining a GIS in the user s environment the user of geodata from different sources does not have to worry about: Finding geodata for his/her special needs Integrating the data in his/her own system Updating the data existing standards based geo web services can easily be combined of Munich 12
