1 COURSE SYLLABUS HISTORY 1301 Distance Education CRN# (Offered through Department of History, Southwest College-HCC) Professor: Dr. Michael McCormick Office: 121C Scarcella Bldg., Stafford Campus, Southwest College-HCC Office Telephone: use the internal (Quickmail) that is part of the Eagle Online system. In an emergency, you may use my HCC address: PREREQUISITES Students must have completed successfully or be concurrently enrolled in English Computer literacy is also required. COURSE DESCRIPTION History 1301 DE is a survey of American History from the time of the Native American migration to the Western Hemisphere through the end of Reconstruction in It will focus on the evolution of the economic, social/cultural and political/diplomatic institutions and ideas of this period that define the development of the modern United States and its people. Although this course is built around historical events and processes, it is much more than a simple recitation of facts and dates. Students will learn and apply critical thinking and problem-solving skills and will work with historical documents, maps and economic and demographic models. History 1301 is an 8-week, 48-contact hour course which fulfills three hours of the statemandated six hour History requirement. It is offered in an online format. Completion of this class will provide students with a thorough grounding in United States History through 1877 as well as an opportunity to improve performance in reading, writing, critical thinking, communication and computer skills. PROGRAM LEARNING OUTCOMES At the conclusion of this course, students will be able to: 1. create an argument through the use of historical evidence 2. analyze and interpret primary and secondary sources 3. analyze the effects of historical, social, political, economic, cultural and global forces during this period. 4. understand the importance of chronology and how earlier ideas and events shaped later events. STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES At the conclusion of this course, students will be able to: 1. discuss the Age of Exploration 2. explain colonization 3. identify the causes and effects of the American Revolution 1

2 4. explain the origins and impact of slavery 5. analyze the formation of the Republic 6. summarize the effects of expansion and innovation 7. explain nationalism and sectionalism 8. discuss the Civil War 9. evaluate the effects of Reconstruction REQUIRED MATERIALS Text: Roark, The American Promise, combined Fifth Edition. This book can be obtained from HCC campus bookstores. However, it is usually cheaper to use online sources like Amazon.com or to buy direct from the publisher, Bedford/St. Martins. It is also cheaper if you can find Volume I of the Fifth Edition rather than the combined version. Because the text is the basis of much of the online work required for this course, it is essential that you acquire a copy as soon as possible. Monograph: Harriet Jacobs, Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl will be the basis for the required course book review paper. It is available as a free download from Project Guternberg.org though this link: If you prefer a hardcopy, there are many editions available through libraries and bookstores. GRADED ASSIGNMENTS The final course grade will be based on the following required quizzes, exams and written assignments with the percentage value of each indicated in parentheses: Unit Quizzes (30%): there are seven unit quizzes; the six highest grades will be averaged to determine this portion of the overall grade. Midterm and Final Exams (60%): each will count 30% of the final grade. Required Paper (10%): a paper over Jacobs, Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl. Failure to complete this assignment will result in failure of the course. Details and instructions for each of these assignments can be found in the Introduction to History 1301 on the class homepage. GRADING STANDARDS Grades will follow the normal college distribution: A = B = C = D = F = 59-0 W = official withdrawal from class I = incomplete. This grade is available only in the event of an excused failure to complete the required paper and/or the Final Exam. 2

3 Grades will not be curved nor will extra credit work be available. If you have time to do extra credit work, it would be wiser to apply that time to studying for and completing the regular assignments. ATTENDANCE AND WITHDRAWAL POLICIES Please Note: students who fail to login to the class site at Eagle Online during the first week of the semester (January 20-26) will be dropped automatically from the class as per HCC policy. Students are also responsible for meeting all deadlines for completing Unit Quizzes, Exams and written assignments. Withdrawal: the last date for officially withdrawing from this class is 4:30pm, February 23. Failure to withdraw by that date will likely result in failure of the course. Students who have not withdrawn by that date will not be eligible to receive a W as a final grade. TECHNICAL RESPONSIBILITIES Firefox Browser: It is essential that students use the Firefox browser for activities related to this course. The Moodle software package that supports Eagle Online, especially its online testing features, is designed specifically for Firefox. Failure to use Firefox when taking online quizzes and exams can lead to complications that can prevent completion of those assignments. You can download a free copy of Firefox using this link: Basic Technical Responsibilities: It is assumed that every student who enrolls in an online class is computer literate and has access to reliable, up-to-do date computer equipment and the required Internet access. It is your responsibility to honestly assess your ability to function in an online environment closely linked to computer technology. It is also your responsibility to evaluate the capabilities of your computer hardware and Internet reliability before and during the period of this class to ensure that you will have ready access to all online course materials and can take required exams and quizzes and submit work through the Eagle Online class site. We cannot be responsible for failure to complete exams and other online assignments because of computer or Internet problems. Especially during the limited periods available for completing major examinations and submitting the written assignment, it is always advisable to have a plan readily available to deal with potential problems. That plan should include eliminating potential distractions and disruptions before beginning a quiz or exam. You should also have a backup computer and Internet system available. One solution might be to use the computers available in HCC libraries and open computer labs. DISTANCE EDUCATION STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES All students are responsible for reading and understanding the DE Student Handbook which contains policies and information about student conduct and other expectations of students. 4 ACADEMIC HONESTY POLICY As in any academic or instructional setting, academic dishonesty will not be tolerated and can lead to serious penalties including failure of an assignment, failure of the course and/or suspension. Academic dishonesty cheating can include the following: Copying from another student s work Using materials during the course of an examination not authorized by the instructor Collaborating with another student during an exam unless authorized by the instructor Knowingly using, buying, selling, stealing, transporting or soliciting in whole or part the contents of an exam or paper. Bribing another person to obtain a copy of an exam. Paying another person to take an exam. Plagiarism: using another person s work as your own without proper attribution. For example, cutting and pasting material from outside sources without using quotations and proper citations is a frequently seen form of plagiarism. Because of the nature of online testing and assignments, distance education courses are particularly susceptible to these kinds of violations. Therefore special attention will be paid to the potential for academic dishonesty. All written work will be review through Turnitin.org. DISTANCE EDUCATION ADVISING AND COUNSELING SERVICES Students needing advising or counseling services should make effective use of AskDECounseling, an online student services help form accessible on the DE Student Services website at de.hccs.edu. This is probably the quickest way to receive information and advice regarding DE registration, advising and counseling. You may also take advantage of the Student Services advising and counseling services available at each major HCC campus. HCC DISABILITY POLICY Any student with a documented disability (e.g., physical, learning, psychiatric, vision, hearing, etc.) who needs to arrange reasonable accommodations must contact the Disability Support Services Counselor, Dr. Becky Hauri ( ) at the beginning of the semester. Dr. Hauri will certify the disability and issue a letter to the appropriate faculty detailing any necessary accommodations. Faculty cannot begin to provide accommodations until they have received the formal letter of certification and are authorized to provide only the accommodations cited by the DSS counselor.
