1 Ogeechee Technical College One Joe Kennedy Blvd. Statesboro, Georgia Syllabus English 2130 American Literature Semester: Spring Semester 2014 Instructor: Pat Murphey Class Time and Room Number: Online Course Hours: Three credit hours Course Type: Online Office: Allied Health Building Room513 Office Hours: MTWR 9:00-10:00 and 3:00-4:30 Office Phone: Cell Phone: Course Description and Goals: This class involves college-level reading and writing assignments and will require students to do some or all of the following: Demonstrate an awareness of literary and cultural diversity in American literature. Demonstrate an awareness of the impact a given culture has had on American literature. Read and recall readings from nonfiction, fiction, poetry, and drama for specific purposes, such as identifying main ideas, and supporting details; drawing accurate conclusions, and identifying an author s purpose. Demonstrate an awareness of literary language, movements and conventions in order to interpret works of American literature. Analyze themes and ideas essential to an understanding of American literature. Demonstrate an awareness of how intellectual and literary traditions impact American literature. Understand how history and culture influence American literature. Demonstrate an awareness of the impact a particular historical period (i.e. Colonial, Puritan, Enlightenment, Revolutionary, Romantic, Transcendental, Expansion, and/or Modern) may have on selected works of American literature. Develop, write, edit, and revise essays by following specific organizational guidelines using clear, effective sentences, coherent paragraphs, and the correct essay structure. Conduct research using hard-copy, database, and online resources. Demonstrate an intermediate knowledge of correct manuscript formatting and research citation techniques. Participate in class discussion, small group discussion, and/or individual presentations. Participate as an active listener. NOTE: Obviously some of these criteria will be modified to suit an online format.

2 Credit/Contact Hours: 3/3 Prerequisites/Corequisite Prerequisite A grade of C or better in English 1101 Competency Areas: A survey of important works in American literature, English 2130 focuses on a variety of literary genres including short stories, poetry, drama, nonfiction, and novels. This course also emphasizes American literature as a reflection of culture and ideas. Topics include literature and culture; essential themes and ideas; literature and history; research skills; and oral presentation skills. Online Information Orientation: All students who intend to register for online classes are required to complete and pass an online orientation prior to registering for classes. To access the online orientation module, students must connect to the college website ( select Current Students and then select Online Course Orientation. Proctoring Exams/Assignments: In order to comply with accreditation requirements for the validation of student identity for all online classes, all students enrolled in online courses at Ogeechee Technical College (OTC) are required to have at least one on-campus or proctored event for each online course in which they are enrolled. The instructor will notify students of the time, date, and location of the proctored event by posting an announcement on the course home page in ANGEL. Students must attend the on-campus or proctored session as scheduled on the Lesson Plan/Course Calendar. Any student who lives more than 50 miles from OTC may make arrangements with the instructor to complete the proctored event with an approved proctor. A student may request an off-campus proctor by submitting the Proctor Nomination Form to the course instructor by the date established by the instructor. The instructor must approve the date and time of the off-campus event. Any student who does not complete the proctored event as scheduled must submit to the instructor a valid documented excuse within three business days of scheduled event. If the excuse is approved, the students must make

3 arrangements with the instructor to reschedule the missed event. Any penalty and makeup directions will be at the instructor s discretion. Students who do not complete the proctored event on the scheduled date and do not present a valid documented excuse within 3 business days will be withdrawn from the course with a WF. Textbook & Materials Textbook Title: The Bedford Anthology of American Literature Volume Two: 1865 to the Present (required for all students) Author(s): Susan Belasco and Linck Johnson ISBN: 10: Publisher: Bedford/St. Martin s Additional Readings and Videos: I will also assign readings not in our textbook. The readings Assessment Distribution of Grades: the instructor will determine the weighting of tests, papers, and other assignments as detailed below. Grading Scale: A B C D F 59 and below Grade Distribution: The final grade for this class will come from the following assignment categories: Weekly Discussion Board Posts (online sections only): At the beginning of each week I will post one or more questions. Each student must answer those questions and respond to at least one classmate s post. Answers should demonstrate that the poster has read the assigned material and given serious thought to his/her answer. Those who meet this requirement will receive full credit for this portion of the course grade. Posting to these forums will count 10% of your course grade. Reading quizzes (on-campus sections only): I will begin most classes with a writing prompt based on the discussion questions posted to online classes and give you a few minutes to respond before our discussions. I will grade them on a scale of 1-10, and they will count cumulatively as 10% of your course grade. Tests: There will be three tests this semester. The last one will be an on-campus proctored exam, so please familiarize yourself with those procedures. Each exam will count 25% of your course grade. Research Project: Research is required by the TCSG as a major competency for this course. In the past, I have made this assignment an annotated bibliography, but that will change this semester. I will assign this project around mid-term. It will count 15% of your course grade.

4 Proctored Exam: As mentioned above, the third test will be a proctored exam taken either on-campus at OTC or administered by an approved proctor.. Each student must be present to take this exam on the announced date or arrange for an approved proctor per guidelines established by Ogeechee Technical College and detailed in this syllabus and on the ANGEL homepage for this course. This exam will be at the end of the semester, and I will notify you as soon as I reserve the room and date. Other Course Policies Attendance: Online sections: Ogeechee Technical College has a mandatory attendance policy for all online courses, to improve student learning and comply with federal regulations and financial aid policies. Students are required to attend an online course through completion of an academically related activity, as defined in the attendance policy and on course syllabi, at least one time during each 7 day period. Per the attendance policy, all students are required to attend at least 90% of the scheduled class time. Any student who does not attend an online class for 11 or more consecutive days (10% of the class) will be withdrawn from the course. A student who does not complete an academically related activity in any 7 day period will be considered absent from class for that week. Any student who accrues two absences, either consecutive or non-consecutive, in an online course may be withdrawn from the course. Academically Related Activities: Participating in weekly discussion boards Submitting a quiz or an exam Submitting a dropbox assignment Completing an interactive tutorial Note: Logging into the class without participating in an academically related activity is NOT considered attending. In this course, the 7 day periods run from Monday through the following Sunday, which is how each week s assignment folder is listed. On-campus sections: Students taking on-campus must also attend at least 90% of class meetings (no more than 3 absences) and maintain that same pace for on-line hybrid assignments. Students with 4 or more absences are subject to withdrawal. I will attempt to contact any student in danger of being withdrawn to try to resolve the situation first. Once a student is dropped, however, reinstatement will be much more difficult than in the past.

5 Important Note Regarding Attendance: Please be aware of the new Ogeechee Tech withdrawal policy. It is posted on the school website and on the ANGEL home page. Course Withdrawal: Students who withdraw from a course and have attended 60% or less of the course will be issued a W (Withdrew). Students who withdraw from a course and have attended more than 60% of the course will be issued a WF (Withdrew Failing) if the student was failing and a WP (Withdrew Passing) if the student was passing upon withdrawal or upon being dropped from the course. The 60% attendance date is posted on the campus calendar online at Students may withdraw from a maximum of three (3) courses while enrolled at the college. Once a student has accumulated three W grades, he/she may elect to receive a withdrawal failing grade (WF) for the course or remain in the course. Please note WF is calculated as an F (Failing) for GPA purposes. Some exceptions may apply in the event a student withdraws for an acceptable hardship, medical/and or military reason. Documentation will be required. Procedures to apply for an exception are available in the Catalog and Student Handbook. Additionally, there is a one-time reinstatement limitation per course each semester. Students are allowed to drop/add courses during the first three days of each term without requesting reinstatement. Beginning on day 4 of the semester, students are required to request a reinstatement from the instructor. The procedure for requesting reinstatement can be found in the Catalog and Student Handbook. Work Ethics Information: The Technical College System of Georgia instructs and evaluates students on work ethics in all programs of study. Ten work ethics traits have been identified and defined as essential for student success: appearance, attendance, attitude, character, communication, cooperation, organizational skills, productivity, respect, and teamwork. As a student in this Ogeechee Technical College course, you will be expected to adhere to the highest standards of these 10 character traits in your behavior as well as your coursework. Late Work: To be fair to every student, the instructor will accept no late work for this class except in cases involving extenuating circumstances.

6 Students experiencing such situations must contact the instructor as soon as possible. Cheating/Plagiarism Academic honesty is expected at all times. Any student found to have engaged in academic misconduct such as cheating, plagiarism, or collusion is subject to disciplinary sanctions as outlined in the Student Code of Conduct detailed in the OTC Catalog and Student Handbook. The term plagiarism includes, but is not limited to, the use, by paraphrase or direct quotation, of the published or unpublished work of another person without full and clear acknowledgment. The term collusion includes, but is not limited to, the unauthorized collaboration with any other person in preparing work offered for academic credit. Students are advised that faculty routinely use turnitin.com both to prevent plagiarism and to assist in verifying when/if it has occurred. LIBRARY RESOURCES The Ogeechee Technical College Library provides students access to books, periodicals, ebooks, GALILEO, and other electronic resources. Students are encouraged to use the Library for class research projects. Help with research and projects is available within the Library. Computers are available for student use. A student ID is required in order to check out any materials from the Library or to use a computer. A self-service, black and white copier is also available. Hours of operation are Monday-Thursday from 7am until 9:30pm. Safety In case of emergency while on campus, please refer to the Emergency Operations and Safety Plan and the Blood Borne Pathogen Exposure Control Plan found by the door of all classrooms and labs on the OTC campus.
