3 Epomm Introduction the european conference on mobility management was founded as the final conference of the MOMENTUM research project in Amsterdam In Amsterdam it was decided to develop it into a series and the next host was Nottingham in the UK in At that stage, it became obvious that there was a necessity to have platform to provide some continuity. In 1999, EPOMM was born, first as a European project. When the EU-support ceased, it had to be developed into an international association, which was finally registered in 2006 in Brussels. all through this time, EPOMM provided for the continuity of the ECOMM series. The ECOMM has now become THE meeting place for Mobility Management practitioners and experts all over Europe, with over 300 delegates. Papers are selected by the International Programme Committee (IPC), whilst the programme is developed in cooperation with EPOMM. EPOMM takes care that ECOMM maintains its agreeable size, its attractive fee structure and high quality, but also strives for continuous development. the objective of ECOMM is to disseminate, increase and exchange the knowledge about mobility management in Europe and beyond and to enhance the networking within the mobility management community. The conference is a chance to get in touch with experts and policy makers. Each ECOMM has its own theme and contributes to a growing expertise in mobility management and the ways in which it can be successfully applied in different contexts.

4 Foreword Foreword Welcome to Gävle and the ECOMM 2013 conference how do you get to work or school? Can we take active measures that affect people s travel patterns and make them more sustainable? In Gävle we think this is possible! We have to explore and test sustainable solutions. We need to have the courage to try new techniques and to plan for sustainable transport in our cities. Above all, we must change attitudes and behavior across the generations. We believe in sustainable travel. Welcome to Gävle! Come and be part of the process! Göran Arnell Municipality Director

5 Theme Ecomm 2013 THEME for ECOMM in Gävle 2013 Smart choices require easy access making sustainable transport a part of every day life the entire trip, from door to door is an important issue for Gävle, our region and all of Sweden. The ability to travel comfortably and quickly, yet in an environmentally friendly way is important to travelers. In the Gävle area, this is an especially important issue because many of the inhabitants live in rural areas and/or commute long distances to cities in the region. City buses, commuter parking, bikes on the train, and other transportation solutions are essential to a well functioning weekday. The 2011 European Mobility Week in Gävle began by clearly showing just how much space different means of transpiration take up in the city s physical environment. If more people choose to carpool or choose smart alternatives like the bus or bicycle, both our environment, our health and our wallets will benefit.

8 About Gävle This is Gävle gävle s location by the Baltic sea has always had great significance for the city s inhabitants and its economy. the sea is still of importance today, for example with the creation of Gävle Strand, which is a unique residential neighbourhood by the mouth of Gävleån (the Gävle River) that is only a few minutes from Gävle s Central Station and the main city square. The beautiful gasklockor (Gävle s historic gas storage facility) can be found on the other side of the river, and is an ideal venue for meetings and events. our intimacy and love of the sea is evident in many places around Gävle; in the historic fishing village of Bönan with its café and fish smokeries, by the Furuvik Park restaurant and by Axmar Bruk (Axmar mill) you find yourself really close to the water. There are also interesting ongoing projects around the Testebo River and Norrlandet to provide even more opportunities to live by and enjoy water. gävle invests in a rich variety of cultural and recreational activities. A professional symphony orchestra is based at the Gävle Concert Hall, where music from all corners of the world can also be heard. The city s biggest celebrity, the Gävle Christmas goat, is built before the first Sunday of Advent every year in Slottstorget (the Castle Square). There are three elite teams in the Gävle area we are particularly proud of: Swedish ice hockey champions Brynäs, Gefle IF football and Sandviken s AIK Bandy. close proximity to Arlanda International Airport, the Port of Gävle, the E4 and E16 highways, and railways makes Gävle a comprehensive logistical hub. the surrounding region also has a great deal to offer. Long sandy beaches in Rullsand, the Kungsberget Ski Resort, Wij Trädgårdar (Wij Gardens), and fishing in the Dalälven, Gysinge and Älvkarleby attract many visitors to the area.

23 Gävle Concert hall / Conference centre the conference will be located in the Gävle Concert Hall, which is located in central Gävle. The building was inaugurated in January 1998 and was designed by architect Bo Karlberg. The beautiful and central location, by the roaring rapids of the Gävle River and the Gävle City Park, makes for a fantastic venue. the facade is clad in shiny, deep blue tiles. The interior walls and floors appear the same, but in reality, the floor is finely sawed white limestone from Greece, while the walls consist of coloured concrete. The white colour and beautiful materials are the foundation to the concert hall s austere interior elegance. the spacious foyer with panoramic windows facing the river stretches out into a hallway with a music library, box office, cloakroom, toilets, bar and the smaller concert hall, Bo Linde Hall. At the front of the building lies the main concert hall, known as the Gevalia Hall, and a restaurant. Other conference rooms are situated on the ground floor, also with panoramic windows towards the Gävle River. The building is well equipped for the disabled. The Gevalia Hall is not only an excellent venue for music, it also works perfectly for all types of meetings and events. the concert hall is designed specifically for acoustic sounds and is extremely well suited for speeches, as presenters can be seen and heard well from anywhere in the auditorium. The concert hall has 819 seats including 536 in the stalls.
