1 Welcome to our proposal for Greenwich Peninsula To Blackwall Tunnel To O2 Arena To Charlton/Woolwich Proposed IKEA Store N To A2/Kent m site plan of the proposed ikea store IKEA is proposing to redevelop the site of the current Sainsbury s foodstore and former Comet store in Bugsby s Way, Greenwich Peninsula. Sainsbury s has planning permission to relocate its store to a nearby site at Gallions Road. At present, people living and working in the Royal Borough of Greenwich as well as those from central London and across the wider south east and east London area who want to visit an IKEA store travel to our stores in Croydon, Lakeside or Tottenham. This represents a significant loss of shopping spend from the Borough which would be retained if a new IKEA opens here. In addition, customers would be able to combine their trips to a Greenwich Peninsula IKEA with visits to other retail outlets in the area. Our proposal would: Create up to 400 job opportunities for local people as well as generate 200 additional jobs during the construction phase Deliver IKEA s most accessible store in the UK for customers visiting by public transport Provide a significant new sustainable development for Greenwich Peninsula YOUR VIEWS Feedback cards are available at this exhibition for you to complete and place in the ballot box or return by post (pre-paid).

2 Ikea s best-connected store to public transport in the uk Key: Proposed IKEA Store London Underground Station North Greenwich (1,800m) (Jubilee Line - with fast connections to central and east London) Greenwich Peninsula National Rail Station Bus Stop Location Key bus routes: Additional bus routes on Woolwich Road, five minutes walk from the site are: N1, 177, 180, 286, 422 MILLENNIUM WAY Principal road network BUGSBY S WAY Proposed IKEA Store Existing car park (for use by IKEA customers) Charlton (1,300m) Westcombe Park (800m) LOCAL PUBLIC transport network SERVING THE PROPOSED IKEA STORE IKEA s proposed store for Greenwich Peninsula will be its most accessible in the UK in public transport terms, offering strong bus, Underground and rail connections, as well as encouraging visits from cyclists and pedestrians. Key connections INCLUDE: Underground: North Greenwich station on the Jubilee Line approximately 20 mins on foot or five minutes by bus from the site Rail: Westcombe Park station served by Southeastern rail services approximately 10 mins on foot from the site Bus: Six bus routes stop at or close to the site providing up to 42 buses in each direction per hour. Five additional bus routes operate on Woolwich Road approximately five mins on foot from the site Cycle: Several off-street cycle routes serve the site Car-borne IKEA customers will be able to use the existing 1,000 vehicle parking spaces, shared with B&Q and Odeon customers, as well as those visiting the various nearby restaurants. As a result, the potential impact of the scheme on the surrounding road network will be limited, particularly as the new IKEA store would not generate as much traffic demand during the peak commuting periods compared with a foodstore. Access from the A102 (Blackwall Tunnel Approach) will be via one of two existing junctions close to the site. Only a small number of vehicles visiting the store are expected to use the minor local road network. However, we recognise the importance of giving full consideration to key issues such as traffic generation, renewable energy, air quality, noise and ecology, and detailed reports assessing all potential aspects of the impact of the redevelopment will be submitted with a planning application for our proposal to the Royal Borough of Greenwich.

3 A sustainable development with long-term benefits Sustainable development is at the heart of IKEA's business. Our approach is founded on enabling customers to live more sustainable lives at home; achieving resource and energy independence; and taking a lead in creating a better life for the people and communities impacted by the company s business activities. IKEA stores across the UK incorporate a range of sustainable features and use sustainable technologies appropriate to each site. Our proposed store for Greenwich Peninsula would be constructed using materials and methods which help to minimise its carbon footprint and aim to provide a significant proportion of the store s energy needs on site. Once operational, the store will continue to optimise the processing and use of energy, waste and other essential resources on a day-to-day basis, including rainwater harvesting and the responsible use of water within the store. The store will not produce any waste destined for landfill sites. One area in which IKEA is playing a leading role as a retailer is in the use of solar panels as an energy source. The IKEA Group has installed over 500,000 solar panels on the roofs of its own stores across the world, including nine UK stores. In addition, we have teamed up with Hanergy, a leading solar energy company, to offer a full photovoltaic (PV) system installation service to our customers directly from the high street.

We have identified three drivers of change that will transform our business making it more sustainable, driving growth, discovering new opportunities and helping create a better everyday life for people by: Inspiring and enabling millions of our customers to live a more sustainable life at home Striving for resource and energy independence Taking a lead in creating a better life for the people and communities affected by our business By 2020, we will produce as much renewable energy as we consume in our operations. Already, almost one third of our electricity consumption (equivalent to five of our UK stores) is generated by a single IKEA-owned wind farm in the UK. 5 Who are we? To create a better everyday life for the many people ; this is the IKEA vision. Our business idea is to offer a wide range of well-designed, functional home furnishing products at prices so low that as many people as possible will be able to afford them. When we began our business, design was not something the many people could afford. So our mission was to give people with thin wallets a chance to furnish their homes. We work hard to achieve quality at affordable prices for our customers through optimising relationships across our entire supply and delivery chain, investing in highly automated production processes and creating products in bulk. Our vision also goes beyond home furnishings. We want to create a better experience for everyone affected by our business. Sweden has a long tradition of combining beauty and function in home furnishings. We started out in Småland, a region of the country known for its stony landscape, expansive forests and hard-working people. Here, practical solutions to everyday life challenges are as important as economising on resources. Our common sense values such as simplicity, cost-consciousness, humbleness and willpower have been and still are the basis of everything we do.

6 Understanding how our customers shop At the IKEA Group we have 298 stores in 26 countries. We opened our first UK store in Warrington in 1987 and now operate 18 across the country. We recognise that consumers want more choice in how they shop. Our experience is that many of our customers who browse our products online or in our catalogue want to view these products in store before making a purchasing decision. In addition, many visit stores not only to view, touch and feel our products but also to be inspired by them. Some 84 per cent of our customers say they like to browse in store for ideas and inspiration (Source: GfK). Some 84% of our customers say they like to browse in store for ideas and inspiration. When identifying sites for new stores, it is important for us to choose those which offer a high level of accessibility for the significant proportion of our customers who are either unable or who do not wish to travel to our stores by car (some 42 per cent of households in London do not own a car). We operate a home delivery service in all IKEA stores in the UK, as well as a range of other services including home assembly and installation and kitchen design services, all of which would form part of the IKEA offer for Greenwich Peninsula.

7 New jobs for local people IKEA s proposal for Greenwich Peninsula would create up to 400 job opportunities for local people in roles ranging from sales and customer relations to interior design and logistics. Some of these roles would be at managerial levels. The store would offer a further 80 jobs to service contractors, including security, facilities management and cleaning services. In addition, the proposal would generate around 200 jobs during the construction phase. Other positions would be created in the ongoing maintenance of the store and the wider supply chain. At IKEA, our co-workers are committed to helping customers live a better everyday life at home. They do this all over the world, in hundreds of different roles. In return, we give them a great place to work. We believe as our co-workers grow, so does IKEA, and that s why we offer co-workers many development opportunities. We provide an inclusive workplace where people can be themselves and this makes for a more creative business. The more we can reflect this diversity among our co-workers, the better we can meet our customers needs. More than a fifth of IKEA UK s co-workers have a service record of over ten years. For example, when it opened, our store in Bristol recruited more than nine out of ten of its co-workers from the Bristol (BS) postcode area. Subsequent applications would then be submitted in order to obtain the Council s approval on the detailed design of the store. If planning permission is granted, we would hope to start work on site once Sainsbury s has relocated to its new store in Gallions Road and the existing store is vacated.
