3 Preface This document is a guide to setting up the Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) for use with Tributary Systems Inc. Storage Director (SD). The setup will be similar for any version on any platform but for this example the TSM for windows server is using version 6.3 and Storage Director is using Version This example uses a Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard Service Pack 1. The Windows Server Name for this example is WIN-6P2Q1G65FUQ and will be used as the Server name. Two clients were set up for this test. The first client is on the Windows Server WIN-6P2Q1G65FUQ, and the second client is a pc named PC-WYATT. PC-WYATT is running Windows 7 with TSM Client software. Install Tivoli Using the IBM Tivoli Storage Manager documentation, setup the TSM server on your server using the standard defaults. Be sure to follow the planning and installation instructions for your site. The installation setup information for TSM can be found on the IBM website at Setup Storage Director has a large range of options for use as a Virtual Tape Library. This is an example of a SD that is directly connected using a Fibre Channel interface to a Windows Server. This requires that the windows server contains a Fibre Channel card and we recommend the QLogic card. Check with TSI support or your sales rep for any questions regarding certified hardware. We set up a client running Windows which is attached to the TSM server on a local LAN connection. Storage Director Setup Once SD has been installed at your site and is up and running do the following: 1. Log into the Web interface for your SD installation. 2. Click on the Configure -> Virtual Device Control -> Create Virtual Library menu option, the Create Virtual Library screen will appear. 3. In the Library Type drop down choose the STK L700 and fill in the description and then click the Next button, and the Create Virtual Drives screen will appear. 4. Choose the STK T9940B drives and enter the number of Virtual drives that you require for your site, in this example we ve entered Click the Next button and the Choose Cards screen will appear. The Choose Cards allows the user to select the interface that is bound to each device. 6. Choose the target interface for your Virtual devices, in our example we used FC0 which is where we attached our FC cable in the QLogic card. 7. Click the Submit button which will take you to the next screen to Create Virtual Tapes. At this point you can choose to defer creating the virtual tapes until later, but you can also do it at this time because the steps are the same. 8. Check that the Virtual Library to Insert Tapes Into: drop down has the correct Library. 9. Take note of the Serial Number that has been assigned to the Virtual Library for later use. 3

4 10. Enter the Barcode Prefix and for this example we ve used TS. Enter the Vtape Capacity the First Vtape and Number of Vtapes entry boxes. The Vtape results will be displayed for the range of tapes that are chosen. The Virtual tape sizes, Barcode, and number of tapes will be identified during the preplanning stage of your installation of SD. The tape type will be 9940 and in this example we have not enabled compression or encryption. 11. Click on the Create Virtual Tapes to proceed. Once this configuration work has completed you will be able to view the Virtual Library and it s components by clicking on the View -> Virtual Library menu option. TSM Setup On the server, start the TSM Management Console. Right Click on the Server and add a New TSM Server. Following the Wizards, and using the defaults and information specific to your environment walk through the default Server Initialization by: 1. Define Environment 2. Server Initialization 3. Configure Devices 4. Configure Nodes When the user gets to the Device Configuration Wizard the Server (WIN-6P2Q1G65FUQ in the example) should show the MediumChangerPeripheral which is the STK L700 Virtual Library that we configured in SD. 4

5 For this Storage Director configuration example we will add the Virtual Library as a real SCSI attached device as if it were a real library. In the Basic Tab you ll see the Name, Type, Manufacturer, Model (L700), Revision, and the Status. Clicking on the Detailed Tab while the Library is selected you should see the Number of drives (2), the Number of slots (618), and other information including the Serial Number. You can compare this serial number with the one found on the SD View Virtual Library Screen (mentioned above). You ll see that these Serial numbers match. 5

6 Next you can verify the same information for each of the drives and confirm that the serial numbers match each drive, and the ordering of those drives match. You can refer to the configuration work earlier when you used SD to select the interfaces that you bound to each device which can also be found by clicking on the Configure -> Server Management -> Assign Cards menu option in SD (image below). 6

7 In the TSM Management Console, click on the Sharing Tab and share the Server as the Library Manager, in our example WIN-6P2Q1G65FUQ_SERVER1 (image below). In the TSM Management Console, click on the Virtual Library tree menu checkbox and click the Add button. If you return to the Device Configuration Wizard in the future you ll see the device checkboxes are green indicating that the devices are already defined to TSM. Setup the device class in our example we used: Device Class Name = ECAPOOL3 Device Access Strategy = Sequential Device Type = ECARTRIDGE Format = DRIVE (This is the default) Mount Limit = Drives 7

8 By using the TSM Management Console command line option you can issue the query devclass command to view the device class configuration. Adding the TSM Clients to the configuration Prerequisite: Install the TSM Client software. For this example we wanted the data to use SD as the landing platform for the data so when creating the copy storage pool, which we also named ECAPOOL3, we set the storage pool hierarchy so that the default BACKUPPOOL was under the ECAPOOL3. Two client nodes have been defined. The first is WIN- 6P2Q1G65FUQ which is also the TSM server, the second is a Windows PC running the TSM Client software. We entered the properties for these clients as per the image below. 8

9 Tivoli Integrated Portal The Tivoli Integrated Portal is a great way to interface with TSM and while everything can be done using the command line the GUI interface is intuitive and easy to use. In the getting started option we followed the suggested steps to configure and manage the environment. But as you saw we set up SD as the landing spot for the data (directly to virtual tape) instead of having it go to DISK and then to TAPE. The first thing we did in the Tivoli Integrated Portal was to add a storage device of the virtual library. The information is the same as was used while setting up the library through the TSM Management Console as you can see below. 9

10 Here you ll be able to see the virtual drives, and virtual library paths and this leads us to the virtual tape volumes. Choosing the Select Action Add Volumes option brings up the Check in volumes page. Select the Not all of the volumes are labeled. Label them now. radio button and click the Next button. When you created the Virtual tapes in SD the volumes are found in the library s entry-exit ports so choose the option to Search for all eligible volumes in the library s entry-exit ports and click the Next button. At the Check in volumes screen, click on the radio button Not all of the volumes are labeled. Label them now, and click Next. At the Check in volumes screen (Volume Search Options) click on the radio button Search for all eligible volumes in the library s entry-exit ports and click Next. At the Check in Volumes (Label and Check In Volumes) screen, select the Discover volumes by reading their bar codes and use the bar codes to create their labels radio button, also click on the Scratch radio button and click Next. In Check in volumes (Advanced Otions) choose the Do not prompt me to insert the tape volumes into the library. They have already been inserted radio button and click the Next button. You will get a Volume discovery process started as process <nn>. Click the Finish button. The discovered virtual tapes will be displayed in a table. If you view the SD library screen (turn update on) you ll see the virtual tapes moved from the IE port to the slots. 10

11 TSM Running the backup At this point you re ready to do a backup of your client systems. We chose to back up the entire client WYATT-PC. You can use SD view virtual library screen to see virtual tapes mounted in the drives as the backup occurs. In the screen below you can see virtual tapes mounted in our two drives as a backup for both the Server client and the PC client are performed. 11

12 By looking at the library in the Storage Devices screen with the Volumes tab selected you can see that the volumes that have been used have had the Category changed from Scratch to Private and the associated owner of the virtual tape volume. The Usage report shows the number of files in the backup. 12

13 TSM Restoring Files On the client we had an old windows directory that we backed up containing 73.2 GB of data. The files were mixed size with some as large as 264MB. This is a good test because the size of the virtual tapes is 10GB which means the restore will span several virtual tapes. We issued the restore to replace the files in the same place as the originals. We planned two tests. The first is to restore the files by overwriting the originals, the second test is to delete the original files and restore them to the original location, but now empty, directory. For the first test TSM sees that the original file is still there and puts up a dialog box asking if you want to overwrite or skip the file. Since we chose to overwrite the files except for those that where read-only and we did that for the entire restore job of C:\windows.old (in our test results refer to log files dirprebackup1.txt and dirpostbackup1.txt). This image was captured from the view virtual library after the restore was issued from the PC-WYATT client. Below you can see that SD mounted two virtual tapes. 13

14 Using one of SD report options we show the active restore by looking at the Virtual Tape Throughput graph. This shows the restore taking place up to 10MB per second which is what our local LAN can handle in traffic. Test Results The backups made to Storage Director using Tivoli worked flawlessly throughout our testing. We did comparisons on the directories pre and post restore and found no errors. We performed several tests that revealed no problems such as: Filling up a virtual tape and having the system move on to the next scratch virtual tape. Restoring everyday files including the very small to some rather large files. Restoring several directories and associated files with the stored data spanning several virtual tapes. Starting a restore with a virtual tape from a previous backup still in the virtual drive. Assuring that the correct virtual tapes mounted and dismounted. Dismount of a tape from a drive using the command prompt after it had finished and before the system dismounted it automatically. Conclusion The TSM software worked as expected. There is a learning curve as with any software of this caliber so reading the planning, installation, and operations manuals will really pave the way when installing and using the product. 14
