1 Jacob Schrum, Ph.D. Office Phone: (512) E Mail: schrum2@southwestern.edu Webpage: Education Ph.D. in Computer Science at the University of Texas at Austin, TX, May 2014 Master of Science in Computer Science, University of Texas at Austin, TX, May 2009 Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, Math and German with Honors in Computer Science and German, and Paideia Scholar, Southwestern University, Georgetown, TX, May 2006 Academic Positions Assistant Professor of Computer Science at Southwestern University since August Research Summary My research focuses on the creation of intelligent agents for simulated environments, and other sequential decision problems. Example domains include robotics, games, and artificial life simulations. Biologically inspired technologies, such as neural networks and evolutionary computation, are the primary tools used to create these agents. A particularly challenging problem for intelligent agents is the learning of multimodal behavior, i.e. an ability to display different modes of behavior as needed in different situations. Such behavior is often promoted by the presence of modular structures within artificial brains. Because such behavior is often based on the pursuit of multiple conflicting goals, I also have an interest in Pareto based multi objective optimization. Awards/Honors Best Paper Awards Best Paper Award in Digital Entertainment and Arts Track, Genetic and Evolutionary Computation Conference (GECCO 2015, Madrid, Spain), to J. Schrum and R.
