3 The University The University of Barcelona is above all an urban university, outward-reaching and cosmopolitan like the city in which its campuses live. And because of this, it plays a direct and active part in the urban fabric of Barcelona, becoming a hub of cultural activity for the city itself. The UB campuses are spread out across the entire inner-city area, thus fostering a series of close ties between the institution of our University and the city around us. These ties contribute to the human and cultural environment present in certain parts of Barcelona and enables members of the university community to enjoy both the city's services and those of the UB. With respect to facilities, the Faculty of Geology was built ( ), teaching began on the Bellvitge Health Sciences Campus (Nursing, Medicine, Dentistry and Podiatry) in 1982, the Mundet Campus was developed during the nineties (Teacher Training, Education and Psychology) and a new building opened in the district of the Raval in 2006 for the Faculty of Philosophy and the Faculty of Geography and History. 3

12 Practical Matters Medical insurance All international students should take out medical insurance for the duration of their stay in our University. Students who are members of the European Economic Area (European Union countries, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway) and who are entitled to social security benefit in their own country should present their European health insurance card. The form for this card is issued by your country's public health authorities and entitles you to medical care in Spain. Students from countries outside the European Economic Area should find out if there is a medical agreement between the ministry of health in their country and Spain (this is the case for some Latin American countries, for example). If there is an agreement, you should ask the health authorities in your country for the health document you will need. This will entitle you to medical care in Spain. All other students must take out private medical insurance for the duration of their stay at the University of Barcelona. You should obtain a document from your insurance company, in Spanish, Catalan, English or French if possible, stating that you are covered while studying in Spain. When registering at the UB on your arrival, you will be requested to show a copy of your medical insurance. 12
13 Student Matters Welcome sessions in UB faculties and schools Most of the faculties and schools at the University of Barcelona organize welcome sessions for students on international exchange programs at the beginning of each semester. 15 Student Tips Erasmus is full of excitement and adventure, but also uncertainty and nerves. Although the International Education Office in UCC and the Office of Mobility and International Programs in the University of Barcelona will help you as much as possible, nothing can beat the experience of being in your shoes. So here are some tips and tricks from UCC students who have studied in Barcelona. Academic Matters: Take the chance to learn new things. Try and take some courses that allow you to learn more about Spanish life, culture, history, or literature. You ll never have quite the same opportunity in Ireland. Contact the Erasmus officers in your subject area if you have any questions about academics. Be aware that you are entering a new education system with different administration, course, and exam structures. Keep up with your reading. Accommodation: Be aware that university residences are located outside the city centre. It s a good idea to find the location of your faculty before securing accommodation. Find out whether bed linen is included or if you have to buy it on arrival. When booking accommodation, ask about the times you will be able to collect your keys and access your residence so you can either arrive during these times or make alternative accommodation arrangements for the first night. Bring pictures of home to put on the walls. Bring a 2-pin plug for your Irish electrical products. Travel: Remember generally the earlier you book the flights, the cheaper they are. Some clubs organise really cheap day and overnight trips. If you are coming home for Christmas, it is a good time to bring back excess luggage. Bureaucracy: Bring multiple photocopies of any documentation you might need. EU citizens do not need a Residence Permit. It is a good idea to carry some sort of ID with you at all times. Social: Buy local news papers and magazine, and listen to local TV, radio, and music. Immerse yourself in the culture. Try to interact with Spanish students and the local community. 15
16 General: Bring a good Spanish dictionary Unlock your mobile phone before you leave Ireland if you want to put a Spanish SIM card in it. Brings some books in English. Although you can buy some English-language books in Spain, they can be expensive, and it is handy to have some for travelling and for when you first arrive. Look into phone cards they are one of the cheapest ways to phone home. If you have a laptop and internet access in your accommodation, look into getting Skype or other internet phone packages. 16
