7 THE UNIVERSITY OF CAPE COAST Location: The UNIVERSITY OF CAPE COAST, GHANA, is one of the rare sea-front Universities in the World. Its main entrance is only about 50 meters from the Atlantic Ocean. It is strategically located along the shores of the Gulf of Guinea, midway between the famous Cape Coast Castle, the first seat of the British Government until 1879 and the Elmina Castle, the first point of call of the first European merchants to the Gold Coast in Mission: The University was established in 1962 originally to train graduate professional teachers for Ghana's second cycle institutions as well as the Ministry of Education. Today, in addition to the above, the University offers a wide range of academic programmes in the Arts, Education, Social Sciences, Sciences, Business, Agriculture and Medicine. Vision: The vision of the University is to become a Centre of Excellence in Africa and the world for human resource and entrepreneurship development in education and related sectors. Academic Programmes: The academic programmes of the University are vested in its eight Faculties/Schools. The Faculties of Arts, Education, Social Sciences and the Schools of Agriculture, Business, Physical, Biological and Medical Sciences. The Faculties/Schools are each headed by a Dean and are sub-divided into 42 Academic Departments, Institutes and Centres. There are also an Academic Quality Assurance Unit (AQAU) and a Professional Counselling Centre. The Departments also offer academic counselling to students. All together, over 50 academic programmes are mounted each year at the Diploma, Bachelor, Master's and Doctorate levels. Library Facilities: The University has an ultra-modern library complex. It has capacity for stocking about 750,000 volumes as well as a seating capacity for 2000 readers. In addition to the and Internet, the Library also has an Inter-Library Loan and Document Delivery facility (ILL/DD). Student Enrolment: Student enrolment is about 17,000 and includes foreign students. 7

8 Halls of Residence: Currently, the University has limited accommodation in six halls of residence namely, Adehye (all females), Casely-Hayford (all males), Oguaa, Atlantic, Valco and the Kwame Nkrumah Hall (all mixed). Medical Services: There is a University Health Services which is headed by a Director of Health Services. Currently, the hospital has a 33-bed capacity with an Out-Patient Department (OPD) capable of attending to over 300 patients daily. There is also an Environmental Health Services Unit which deals with general sanitation on the campus. Places of Interest: In addition to a lovely beach along the Atlantic ocean whose waves thunder intermittently, showers and music across the verdant campus, there are also the following places of interest. The brochure provides the detailed break-down of subject requirements, subject combinations and most importantly the basic entry grades required at the Faculty as well as the minimum requirements for programmes at the departmental level. The booklet, therefore, is to help applicants in the selection of programmes in the University. 9 FIRST DEGREE PROGRAMMES POST-SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL CANDIDATES BASIC ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: The Minimum Admission Requirement into the University of Cape Coast for WASSCE applicants is aggregate 36. For SSSCE applicants, the minimun requirement is aggregate 24. Candidates must have passes in six (6) subjects with overall aggregate of 36/24 at the WASSCE/SSSCE level respectively Three of the six subjects must be core subjects: English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science or Social Studies and three must be in relevant electives. For purposes of admission, a pass in (i) WASSCE means Grade: A1 C6. (ii) SSSCE means Grade: A D. In addition to the above, candidates must satisfy requirements as indicated below: FACULTY OF ARTS (A) B.A. (ARTS) i. Candidates must have passes in at least two (2) elective Arts subjects: French, Literature in English, Ghanaian Language (Akan/Ewe/Ga), Music, Religious Studies, Government/History. ii. Applicants to be admitted to read French as part of their degree programme must have a pass in French not below grade C6. 9

10 (B) B.A. (AFRICAN STUDIES) i. Applicants to be admitted to B.A. (African Studies) programme must have passes in at least two (2) of the following elective subjects with grades not lower than C6: French, History, Literature in English, Ghanaian Language (Akan/Ewe/Ga), Religious Studies, Government, Economics, Geography. ii iii iv Applicants who intend to read B.A. (African Studies) and major in African Music (Ethnomusicology) must have in addition to B (i). Associated Board of the ROYAL SCHOOL OF MUSIC (ABRSM) grade 1-4 OR A flair for Music and the ability to read and notate simple melodies and rhythmic patterns to be assessed by pre-admission test. (C) B.A. (THEATRE STUDIES) i. Candidates must have passes in at least two Elective Arts subjects: Literature in English, Ghanaian Language (Akan/Ewe/Ga), Music, Religious Studies, History/Government. ii. (D) Applicants who intend to read B.A. (Theatre Studies) as their major subject must have a good pass (not below C6) in Literature in English at the WASSCE. BACHELOR OF MUSIC i. Candidates must have passes in Music and any two (2) of the following Elective Arts Subjects History, Government, Literature in English, Ghanaian Language (Akan/Ewe/Ga), Religious Studies. ii Associated Board of the ROYAL SCHOOL OF MUSIC (ABRSM) Grade 1-4 OR 10

11 iii iv. A flair for music and the ability to read and notate simple melodies and rhythmic patterns to be assessed by pre-admission test. The Department of Music would interview all prospective music major students as well as those who may wish to combine music with other subjects. At the interview, candidates will be expected to demonstrate proficiency on their chosen instruments. Candidates are expected to bring their own instruments to the interview. Applicants who wish to study Music but have not passed music at WASSCE Level will write an Entrance Examination provided they satisfy the basic University Entry Requirements. The Entrance Examination date will be the same for the Mature Students Examination. (E) i ii B.A. (MASS COMMUNICATION) Candidates must have passes in at least two (2) elective Arts subjects; French, Ghanaian Language (Akan/Ewe/Ga), Literature in English, Religious Studies, Government/History. Applicants to be admitted to read B.A. (Mass Communication) must have a pass in Literature in English not below grade C5. 11

(BASIC EDUCATION) Candidates must have passes in Core Mathematics, Core English, Integrated Science and Social Studies In addition, candidates must have passes in three (3) elective subjects selected from category a, b, or c. (a) (b) (c) Literature in English, Ghanaian Language (Akan/ Ewe/ Ga), Religious Studies, History, French Elective Mathematics, Geography, Economics Elective Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology B.Ed. (EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION) Candidates must have passes in the following core subjects: Core Mathematics, Core English, Integrated Science and Social Studies In addition, candidates must have passes in three (3) elective subjects selected from category a, b or c. a) Literature in English, Ghanaian Language (Akan/Ewe/Ga), Religious Studies, History, French b) Elective Mathematics, Geography, Economics c) Elective Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology B.Sc. (PSYCHOLOGY) Candidates must have good passes in the following Core Subjects: English, Mathematics, Integrated Science and Social Studies. 12

13 In addition, candidates must have good passes in three (3) elective subjects with an aggregate of 36 or better in any of the following elective areas: Science, Business or General Arts. B.Ed. (MANAGEMENT) Candidates must have good passes in Core English, Core Mathematics, Integrated Science and Social Studies. In addition, candidates must have good passes in three (3) elective subjects under Accounting/Secretarial options namely; Accounting, Business Management, Economics, Clerical Office Duties, Typing and Principles of Costing A good pass in Literature in English will be an advantage. B.Ed. (PHYSICAL EDUCATION) Candidates must possess six (6) subjects including Core English, Core Mathematics, Integrated Science and Social Studies with overall aggregate of 36. Candidates would be subjected to the following practical examinations and assessments. i. Motor Educability Test ii. Cardiovascular Endurance Test iii. A Selected game N.B.: Selection of candidates for admission will depend largely on a candidate's performance in the practical examinations. The date for the practical examinations for B.Ed. (PHYSICAL EDUCATION) candidates would be announced later. 13

14 B.Ed. (SOCIAL SCIENCES) Candidates must have good passes in Core English, Core Mathematics, Integrated Science and Social Studies. The elective passes should include any three (3) of the following subjects: Economics, Geography, History, Accounting, Business Management, Elective Mathematics, Principles of Costing. The following are the various combinations: Accounting/Management Accounting/Economics Economics/Management Economics/Geography B.Ed. (SOCIAL STUDIES) Candidates must have passes in Geography and any two (2) of the following elective subjects: Economics, History/Government. B.Ed. (ARTS) Candidates must have good passes in Core English, Core Mathematics, Integrated Science and Social Studies. The elective passes should include any three (3) of the following subjects: Literature in English, French, Ghanaian Language (Akan/Ewe/Ga), History, Religious Studies and Music. The following are the various combinations English/French English/Ghanaian Language English/Religious Studies English/Music English/History French/Ghanaian Language French/Religious Studies French/Music 14

(MATHEMATICS) Candidates with good passes (grade C6 or better) in Core English, Core Mathematics, Integrated Science and Social Studies. Candidates must pass Elective Mathematics plus any two (2) of the following elective subjects: Economics, Geography, Physics and Chemistry. B.Ed. (SCIENCE) or B.Ed (COMPUTER SCIENCE) Candidates with good passes (grade C6 or better) in Core English, Core Mathematics, Integrated Science and Social Studies plus any three (3) of the following elective subjects: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. B.Ed. (HOME ECONOMICS) a) Passes in Core English, Core Mathematics Integrated Science and Social Studies b) Passes in Management in Living and any two (2) other elective subjects relevant to the preferred option. For Clothing and Textiles Option, the appropriate electives are: Clothing and Textiles (compulsory), Art, Chemistry, Physics, Biology and Economics. For Foods and Nutrition Option, the appropriate electives are: Foods and Nutrition (compulsory), Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Economics, French and Art. 15

16 B.Ed. (HEALTH SCIENCES) i. Candidates must possess GCE 'O' Level credit passes (grade 6 or better) in five (5) subjects including English Language, Mathematics and General Science. Passes at the GCE 'A' Level will be an advantage. Or ii. SSS candidates with good passes in core subjects including Core English, Core Mathematics and Integrated Science. In addition to i or ii, applicants must hold a three-year Diploma awarded by an accredited Health Training Institution in any of the following areas: General Nursing, Community Health, Psychiatry, Midwifery, Nutrition, Disease Control, Environmental Health. All candidates must have a minimum of three (3) years working experience (excluding rotation for nurses). OR iii. Candidates with three-year certificate (eg. SRN, Disease Control, Nutrition etc.) obtatined from accredited Health Training Institutions and have worked for not less than 6 years without break of service. Applicants should include certified copies of their academic transcript showing semester-by-semester GPA and FCGPA. 16

17 FACULTY OF SOCIAL SCIENCES (i) B.A. (SOCIAL SCIENCES) Candidates must obtain passes in Core English, Core Mathematics, Integrated Science and Social Studies. In addition, candidates must have passes in three (3) elective subjects including two (2) of the following: Economics, Government/History, Geography, and Elective Mathematics. (ii) B.Sc. (HOSPITALITY MANAGEMENT) Candidates must obtain passes in Core English, Core Mathematics Integrated Science and Social Studies In addition, candidates must have passes in any three (3) of the following elective subjects: Geography, Economics, Government/ History, Introduction to Business Management, Elective Mathematics, Management in Living and Food and Nutrition. (iii) B.Sc. (TOURISM MANAGEMENT) Candidates must obtain passes in Core English, Core Mathematics Integrated Science and Social Studies. In addition, candidates must have passes in any three (3) of the following elective subjects: Geography, Economics, Government/ History, Introduction to Business Management and Elective Mathematics. (iv) B.A. (POPULATION AND HEALTH) Candidates must obtain passes in Core English, Core Mathematics Integrated Science and Social Studies. 17

18 In addition, candidates must have passes in any three (3) of the following elective subjects: Geography, Economics, Government, History, Introduction to Business Management and Elective Mathematics. (v) B.A. (ANTHROPOLOGY) Candidates must obtain passes in Core English, Core Mathematics, Integrated Science and Social Studies. In addition, candidates must have passes in two (2) of the following elective subjects: Economics, Geography, Elective Mathematics, Government/History. 18

19 SCHOOL OF BUSINESS i. BACHELOR OF COMMERCE Candidates must obtain passes in Core English, Core Mathematics Integrated Science and Social Studies. Candidates must also have passes in three (3) elective subjects under Accounting option subjects. Financial Accounting plus any two (2) of the following subjects: Business Management, Principles of Costing, Economics and Elective Mathematics. ii. BACHELOR OF MANAGEMENT STUDIES Candidates must obtain passes in Core English, Core Mathematics Integrated Science and Social Studies. Candidates must also have passes in three (3) elective subjects under Accounting/Secretarial option subjects. i.e. Financial Accounting, Business Management, Principles of Costing, Economics, Elective Mathematics and Clerical Office Duties. 19

(Nursing)* Candidates must obtain a) passes in Core English, Core Mathematics, Integrated Science and Social Studies. b) passes in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics with grades not lower than C6 in Biology and one other elective science subject. c) an overall aggregate of 36 or better in three core and three elective subjects. NOTE: Students will be selected into these programmes at the beginning of level 300 except Biochemistry and Nursing Students. B.Sc. (NURSING) i. Candidates must have passes in all core subjects including English, Mathematics, Integrated Science and Social Studies ii. In addition, candidates must have obtained good aggregates in Biology, Physics, Chemistry, and Elective Mathematics. 20

B. Sc. (COMPUTER SCIENCE) Candidates must obtain (a) (b) (c) passes in Core English, Core Mathematics, Integrated Science and Social Studies passes in Elective Mathematics, Physics and any one Elective subject; and an overall aggregate of 36 or better in three core and three elective subjects. B.Sc. (INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY) Candidates must obtain (a) (b) (c) passes in Core English, Core Mathematics, Integrated Science and Social Studies passes in Elective Mathematics and any other two elective subjects; and an overall aggregate of 36 or better in core and elective subjects. 23

(MEDICAL LABORATORY TECHNOLOGY) Candidates must obtain (a) (b) (c) passes in Core English, Core Mathematics, Integrated Science and Social Studies passes in Chemistry, Physics and any one of the following elective subjects: Biology, Elective Mathematics and General Agriculture; and an overall aggregate of 36 or better in three core and three elective subjects. DOCTOR OF OPTOMETRY* Candidates must obtain (a) passes in Core English, Core Mathematics, Integrated Science and Social Studies (b) (c) passes in Chemistry, Physics and either Biology or Elective Mathematics; and an overall aggregate of 36 or better in three core and three elective subjects. * This is a six-year programme. 24

25 SCHOOL OF AGRICULTURE B.Sc. (AGRICULTURE) i. Candidates must have passes in the following core subjects: English, Mathematics, Integrated Science and Social Studies. ii. In addition to the above, candidates must have passes in three (3) elective subjects under options 1 and 2 below: OPTION 1: General Agriculture, Chemistry, Physics/Elective Mathematics. OPTION 2: Biology, Chemistry, Physics/Elective Mathematics. 25

26 SCHOOL OF MEDICAL SCIENCES Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MB, Ch B) i. Candidates must have passes in Core English, Core Mathematics and Integrated Science. ii. In addition to the above, candidates must have obtained good passes in three of the following: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Elective Mathematics. iii. Applicants who satisfy the above requirements must have a total aggregate of 08 or better in six subjects (3 Core and 3 Electives) to qualify for shortlisting. iv. Applicants will be required to attend an interview. v. Applicants who are applying into the School of Medical Sciences should note that the programme is strictly FEE-PAYING. 26

27 2 POST-DIPLOMA CANDIDATES The University of Cape Coast runs a full-time Post-Diploma Degree Programme as follows: Applicants in this category should fill the Post-Diploma Application for Admission Forms. Candidates must possess a Diploma in any field of Agriculture from a recognized University or Polytechnic. ii. In addition to the above, candidates must have FIVE (5) GCE 'O' Level credit passes including English Language and Mathematics and two (2) Science subjects or six (6) SSSCE/WASSCE passes in English Language, Mathematics, Integrated Science and three (3) elective subjects including at least two (2) Science subjects. B.Sc. (ANIMAL HEALTH) Candidates must have: i. A Veterinary Assistant (Technical Officer) Certificate from Pong- Tamale or allied institutions with strong Animal Health Programmes. ii. iii. In addition, either a Diploma in Animal Health from the University of Ghana or a Diploma from a recognized institution with strong Animal Health Programmes. 38 DURATION OF THE PROGRAMME The programme will be for 2 years. Students will enter the programme at Level 300. The programme is primarily for staff of Ministry of Food and Agriculture but some fee-paying students would be considered for admission from other institutions. Applicants without passes in any of Mathematics, English and Integrated Science will be considered for admission only after passing the 6-week Remedial programme at the University of cape Coast. B.Sc. (AGRICULTURAL EXTENSION) PROGRAMME The Post Diploma B.Sc. Degree programme in Agricultural Extension is a two-year programme launched at the request of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MOFA). REQUIREMENTS Although the programme targets applicants from MOFA, other applicants can be admitted on fee paying basis. To qualify for admission, an applicant must meet the following minimum requirements: 1. Possess a Diploma in Agriculture or a related field from a recognized institution. 2. Have a minimum of three years post-diploma field experience in service.. 3. Possess G.C.E. Ordinary level or SSSCE credit passes in English Language and Mathematics and Science (Physics, Chemistry or Biology/ Agricultural Science). 38

49 ONE-YEAR PROFICIENCY COURSE IN ENGLISH FOR FRANCOPHONE STUDENTS The proficiency programme in English is designed to develop learners' listening, speaking, reading and writing skills through exposing learners to samples of language that they might encounter in real life situations, and also taking them through carefully graded exercises. The programme lasts for two semesters made up of a minimum of (12) teaching weeks per semester, and sixteen (16) contact hours per week. The first semester is equivalent to the Intermediate Level and may be terminal for candidates who cannot register for the whole year. The second semester's work is equivalent to Advanced Level and may be taken by candidates who already have an Intermediate Certificate in English from an approved institution. ENTRY REQUIREMENT The basic entry requirement is the Baccalaureate. ASSESSMENT Learners are assessed through quizzes, written and oral tests and formal examinations at the end of the semester in accordance with the regulations of the University of Cape Coast. CERTIFICATION Upon successful completion of the course at either the Intermediate Level st nd (1 Semester) or Advanced Level (2 Semester), a candidate shall be recommended by the English Department through the Faculty of Arts for the award of a Certificate of Proficiency, Intermediate or Advanced, by the University of Cape Coast. 49
