2 Northwestern Elementary School will hold their annual Mardi Gras Parade on Friday, February 13th at 9:30 a.m. entertaining the Zachary Early Learning Center students. Join the festivities as the children learn about this Louisiana tradition. Special Olympics 5 th Annual Zachary Time Trials to Be Held at ZHS The 5th Annual Zachary Time Trials opening ceremonies will be held on Friday, February 15 at 10 a.m. on the Zachary High Track. Spectators are invited to come out to watch and cheer on the athletes as they participate in the running, jumping and throwing events. Volunteers from Zachary Kiwanis, Zachary Fire Department, Zachary Police Department and Moreau Physical Therapy will be running each of the events. Northwestern Elementary Kinder Garden is Sprouting Garden beds planted in September are growing and lettuce, turnips and broccoli have been harvested. The students enjoy planting, tending, harvesting and eating the fruits of their labors. ZES Students Honor Black History Month Students in Mrs. Jones Social Studies combined Louisiana tradition with their study of history. The class designed Mardi Gras floats for Black History Month to honor and celebrate the achievements of black men and women throughout history. 2

3 CME Regional Young Author s Contest Winner Brianne Bankston, a 6 th grade student in Ms. Atkinson s class, won first place in the regional level of the Young Author s Contest and is advancing to state. Brianne won for her nonfiction piece, Softball. CME Takes Pictures Aboard the International Space Station Mrs. Perrodin s students, joined thousands of others in taking control of the International Space Station camera last week. The students partnered up and communicated with a class Mission Control to work together to send data to the ISS s on board camera. They took phenomenal high resolution pictures of Earth making connections to weather, latitude and longitude, geographic landforms and mathematical calculations needed to plan future pictures. We are looking forward to the pictures coming in and will share them soon. Visit for more information on future missions you can participate in too. 3

4 Outstanding Job by ZHS Drama Department Congratulations to Mrs. Dry, Mrs. Masterson, Mr. Reynolds and the whole ZHS Drama department for their production of Hairspray over the past two weeks! This production was truly spectacular for everyone that attended. Zachary High School Creates Celebration Hall Mrs. Littles, Mr. Fletcher, Dr. Jackson, and Mrs. Raziano created Celebration Hall to honor Black History Month. All ZHS homerooms are invited to participate in the 1 st ever Black History Month Trivia contest and compete for prizes. 4

5 Zachary High Students Participate in All-Parish Honor Band Zachary High School had 33 students who participated in All Parish Honor Band. To be selected for this honor band, students must prepare music and perform an audition in the month of December. There were two evening rehearsals and one day rehearsal leading up to a performance on Friday, January 30 at Broadmoor High School. There were more students from Zachary High in the ensemble than any other school. Great job Mr. Venable and Mr. Alexander and the outstanding band participants. Belles Represent Zachary High at Walt Disney World The Zachary High Belles Dance team traveled to Walt Disney World to compete in the National Dance Team Championship. Hundreds of teams from around the country competed. The Belles advanced to the semi final round of competition, and just missed moving through to the final round of competition by less than a point. The team danced well and represented Zachary proudly. Tryouts for next year's squad will be in early March. Parent Information Meeting Held at ZHS 5

6 ZHS hosted an important parent information meeting last Tuesday night concerning scheduling. Parents received information on Honors classes, AP classes, Dual Enrollment, and other pertinent information. Thanks to Mrs. Henry and the ZHS counseling office for making ZCTC Teacher Provides Expertise to Louisiana Native Guard ZCTC teacher and university adjunct instructor Emmitt Glynn is considered an expert in the area of history. Mr. Glynn recently aided in assembling the Louisiana Native Guard exhibit. The exhibit showcases artifacts from the Civil War and the Battle at Port Hudson. In observance of Black History month, the West Baton Rouge Museum remembered the courageous efforts of African American soldiers during the war. The West Baton Rouge Museum will showcase the exhibit until March 22. For more information, call ZCTC Host 2 nd Annual College and Career Week Zachary Career and Technical Center hosted its annual college and career week which started off with the Men's Wearhouse Company hosting a presentation on "Dress for Success"! Students also participated in a job fair and three college tours. This event is an integral part of our program because it teaches students the importance of preparing for job interviews and for postsecondary education. ZCSD Shares in Construction Craft Career Grant 6

7 A $45,000 grant has been awarded to help promote an interest in construction craft careers in the North Capital Region, made up of East Feliciana, Pointe Coupee, West Feliciana and Zachary schools districts. Click on the attached link for more information as seen in The Advocate /grant to be used to Athletics Update Wrestling Brusly will be hosting the Greater Baton Rouge City Championships Friday and Saturday at Brusly High School. The Broncos have 9 seeded wrestlers out of 14 weight classes. The Broncos will be led by #2 seeds: Senior Nick Wallis at 170 lbs, Senior David Oneal at 152 lbs, and Junior Sam Johnson at 145 lbs. wrestling will begin at 5:30 on Friday evening and 9:30 on Saturday morning. The Finals are scheduled for 3:00 Saturday. Girls Soccer The ZHS Girls soccer team ended the season as district runner ups with a 7 1 district record, Congratulations to our girls' soccer team members for making the playoffs. They travel to Mandeville on Thursday to play #4 seed Mandeville. Game time is 6 p.m. Basketball The Boys Basketball Team defeated Live Oak Tuesday night The Broncos will play at Central Tuesday in another huge district match up. Come out and cheer for your Broncos! Girls Basketball The Girls Basketball Team beat Live Oak Tuesday night Improving their record to 20 9 for the season. Rayah Haynes led all scorers with 15 pts. Boys Soccer , 8 2 in district. They are ranked #23 and are scheduled to play #10 Bonnabel at Joseph Yenni Stadium in Metairie at 5 p.m. this Friday. Track On February 21 the Boys and Girls Track team will be competing in the LHSAA Indoor State Championship at LSU Indoor Track. The girls track team is the 5A defending Outdoor Champions and one of the favorites in this year s indoor championships. The Lady Bronco Track Team is led by Sophomore Janie O'Connor (ranked #1 in the state in the 60 Meter Dash and the 400 Meter Dash). Also, Freshman Kristen Jackson is ranked #1 in the Girls Shot Put, the Girls 4 X 200 Meter Relay is ranked #1 Dakota Williams, Janie O'Connor, Kiara Bethely, Jennifer Brown. Other Lady Broncos ranked are Janet Campbell (HJ) Ashlyn Cole (SP) Dakota Williams (60M Dash). The boys are led by Senior Darryl Williams who is the 2014 Indoor State Runner up in the Boys (HJ). The 4 X 200 Meter Relay is ranked 4th Keidrick Haynes, Caesar Moore, Christopher Carrier, Bryan Bradford. The 4 X 400 Meter Relay is ranked 6th Davis Hughes, Caesar Moore, Christopher Goff, Bryan Bradford. Keidrick Haynes is also ranked in the boy s long Jump. The outdoor season begins on March 6th at West Feliciana. The team will host the LA Farm Bureau Insurance Bronco West Feliciana on March 13th. Please come and support the Bronco Track Teams. Baseball The 2015 Season will kick off this Saturday with a scrimmage against Byrd at 10 am. At LSU Alexandria. Softball This season begins with lofty goals for the Lady Broncos having 3 seniors on the roster and 5 return starters from last year s Bi District round playoff team. Come out and join the team at Zachary Youth Park for the season opener on February 23 at 4 p.m. as the 2015 Zachary High School Softball team faces HL Bourgeois in the first of many exciting games this season. Golf Our golf team will start its season this Monday with a match at The Bluff s in St. Francisville. Football Congratulations to Senior Free Safety, Khari Lowe signed with Howard University on a full football scholarship on Wednesday. 7
