1 Program of the 1st SVALI summer school in Earth System Modeling and Ice Modeling Monday 23 May Registration Signing in and moving into the dormitories/rooms. Östermark (Åbo Akademi): High-performance Computing in Accounting and Finance Introduction into UNIX/Linux A short crash-course for those who are not familiar with UNIX/Linux systems and how to use principle features of the command shell. This knowledge is needed for the FORTRAN course tomorrow Team building dinner Instruction for arrival on Monday Organized transport by mini-bus from Helsinki-Vantaa airport at about 13:00 and 18:00.Transport with rented taxi from Helsinki Railway station at about 11:00. Please inform (Thomas.zwinger@csc.fi) on whether you would like to join one of these transport opportunities. Alternatively, you can reach Solvalla by public transport. Check the online portal for connections. Your destination is Solvalla. The shortest connection from airport is with bus 535 to Espoo (Espoon keskus) or, alternatively, first with the bus 615 or 615T to Helsinki central railway station, then with train (lines Y, S, U, L, E) to Espoo. From Espoo then continue with bus 85 to Solvalla. You need a region ticket (Fin: seutulippu) that will bring you from the airport or Helsinki to Solvalla. The timetable for commuter trains from Helsinki main station is found under (check for trains going towards Kirkkonummi). In case of troubles, please contact either ( ) or Pekka Manninen ( ). 2 Tuesday 24 May Introduction to Fortran 95/ Introduction to C (parallel session) Fortran 95 and C are commonly used languages in High Performance Computing (HPC). Elmer, the code we are mostly dealing with in the second week of the school, mainly is written in FORTRAN. Hence, if you are not familiar with this programming language, we recommend joining the FORTRAN part in order to cope with the programming exercises of the second week. These lectures are shared with the CSC summer school Introduction to Fortran 95/ Introduction to C (parallel session) The continuation of the morning courses (see above) Exercises Exercises along the contents of today s lectures Scripting Techniques UNIX/Linux systems contain powerful tools to manipulate and change files and their contents in a very effective way. Principle concepts of redirecting input and output streams, pipes and scripting (AWK, bash) are explained. This lecture is shared with the CSC summer school.

3 Wednesday 25 May Introduction to parallel computing Parallel computing is an essential aspect of Earth system models. This lecture shall give an overview on the possibilities and hurdles that come along with the implementation of programs on large parallel platforms, such as clusters and supercomputers. This lecture is shared with the CSC summer school MPI: basics and point to point communication The common standard for inter-process communication in High Performance Computing (HPC) is MPI (Message Passing Interface). By nature, programs written for parallel platforms in some aspects differ from serial codes. This lecture shall provide the basic concepts of parallel thinking thinking. You can either enjoy nature in the close-by national park of Nuuksio or re-visit the places in the city of Helsinki you missed the previous afternoon. You have to organize your own connection to downtown, but there is a quite good connection with public transport facilities. Check the online portal for connections. Your departure location is Solvalla and your destination is either Railway Station or Kamppi (the central bus station in Helsinki)

8 Tuesday 31 May Elmer/Ice basic course Basic introduction to Elmer/Ice along the lines of the ISMIP-HOM experiment E, the Arolla flow line. Gradually, we increase the level of complexity, discussing major components such as power law, sliding, heat transfer, diagnostic and prognostic runs Sport afternoon Choice between canoeing on the lake and trekking in the forest Sauna + Pizza Seminar: basal hydrology, sliding Presentation and discussion on the basal conditions in ice flow modeling

9 Wednesday 1 June Elmer/Ice workshop a real world example Along a testcase of a real glacier (Tete Rousse glacier) we show how to set up the model starting from bedrock and surface DEM.
