1 otor Electronic Control and System For ultimate motor protection and increased productivity For Contactor TIP! Use Overload Relay Family CA7 CA6 CA5 CEP7 CT7 CT7K CT4 CA4 CEF1 Described in this section Detailed technical and application information can be found in publication no: Tech-NK. Ask your Sprecher + Schuh representative for a copy. The Sprecher + Schuh Electronic otor Unit is a unique digital microprocessor controlled system that creates an exact thermal image of the motor. This technology permits motors to run at their full capacity while providing maximum overload protection. Options are available that provide additional protection functions including short circuit, phase reversal, underload protection, ground fault, and much more. ake full use of equipment The provides extremely accurate thermal imaging of the motor. This means that equipment can be safely run at maximum output even with fluctuating loads, brief overloads, phase unbalance, and other conditions. The precise thermal imaging takes into account the temperature rise of the stator winding and the iron mass of the motor. This two-body simulation provides accuracy during all conditions of starting, running, and stopping motors. Simple adjustments provide accurate thermal simulation for all types of motors. Avoid unplanned downtime, diagnose problems quickly The various protective and control functions can be easily programmed to trip the main (tripping) relay, a separate alarm relay, or any of five auxiliary relays. This means that a warning can be given rather than tripping the motor off line, allowing the unit to be repaired during a planned shutdown. In addition to causing output relays to trip, all parameters can be displayed on the LCD panel located on the front of the. ➊ ➐ ➋ ➏ Use with all types of motors Adjustments can be made for different motor cooling constants, such as those found on separately ventilated or liquid cooled motors. Also, the degree of inertia setting can be changed to adapt to motors with differing locked rotor time ratings. This makes the adaptable to protecting all motors under maximum loading conditions in both high and low inertia applications. The is not directly connected to the motor voltage. ecause of this feature, and the fact that it is so flexible, it can be effectively used on medium voltage motors. For these applications, the user must supply appropriate current transformers. onitor thermal usage For increased safety and productivity, an optional 4-20 milliamp analog output is available that allows monitoring of thermal usage of the motor. When used for load control, such as a feeder conveyor on a rock crusher, the loading can be continually matched to the motor s maximum temperature. This permits optimum utilization of the motor with full thermal overload protection. ➌ ➍ ➎ 42

The time/current trip characteristics are factory set for most motors - six times FLA for 10 seconds. In addition to setting the full load amps, five other parameters can be set. This means accurate protection for all types of motors. Phase Unbalance and Single-phase - When phase voltages are unbalanced, the resulting current unbalance in the motor can be six to ten times the voltage asymmetry. These currents can quickly cause damage to the motor. The can provide warning and trip functions for current imbalances of 5 to 80%, with tripping delay adjustable from one to five seconds. High Overload and Stall - When motor driven machinery becomes blocked or jammed, unnecessary motor temperature rise and mechanical damage can result. The can provide tripping or alarm signals under these conditions. The stall current is adjustable from one to six times full load amps and the trip delay can be set from 0.1 to 5 seconds. Since the motor has not experienced a significant temperature rise, it can be restarted immediately after the blockage has been removed. Underload - Pump motors that are cooled by the medium they are pumping can be overheated in spite of underloading. Also, pumps can be damaged by cavitation or noload pumping. On other equipment, broken shafts, belts etc., can cause severe damage quickly. Very often, these motors are only accessible with difficulty, so any damage would cause long and costly repairs. The can detect underload conditions and provide warning or trip. The response level is adjustable from 0% to 100% of FLA. The time delay is adjustable from 1 to 60 seconds after the motor current has fallen below the set response level. Ground Fault - ost insulation faults in motors result in small ground currents which can rapidly rise to a very high value causing motor failure. The can be set to trip or provide warning of ground currents of % of FLA, with a time delay of 0.1 to 5 seconds. For even greater protection, the CST4 option is available which can utilize a 100/1 ratio core balance current transformer to detect ground currents as small as amps. This can provide early warning to protect against motor damage from ground faults. Other important functions Limited starts per hour - Total number of starts per hour can be limited from 1 to 10. onitor starting time - aximum starting time of the motor can be set from 1 to 240 seconds. Warm start - If desired, tripping time for a warm start can be extended to % of the cold start setting. The number of warm starts per hour can be set from 1 to 15. Emergency override - Allows the motor to be started immediately after tripping. Can be used in situations where continuing operation is more important than motor protection. rear view 43
3 otor Optional protection functions The following warning and protection functions are available options: Short Circuit - Enables fast tripping under short circuit conditions. Setting range adjustable from 4 to 12 times FLA, delay adjustment is 20 to 990 milliseconds. Stalling During Start - Provides an input connection for a zero speed switch to sense motor stall during start and trips in 1/2 second. Thermistor (PTC) Input - Allows connection of thermistors embedded in motor windings to trip under overtemperature conditions. Control Inputs - Two external input connections can be programmed to provide a variety of programmed functions such as timers, lock out of protection functions and two speed starting. Timer Functions - 0 to 240 second on and off delay timers can be initiated by external control inputs and programmed to output relays. Intuitive controls provide easy operation The is very easy to operate. Utilizing six pressure sensitive keys and the LCD, all functions, data and tests can be entered, executed, or displayed. SET VALUES Actual Recorded Values Set Communicate! Change Enter Select Settings An optional communications card is available that provides connectivity to the outside world. Utilizing the internationally recognized PROFIUS communications protocol, this provides two way communications to program the and There are three program modes: Set Values, Actual Values Recorded Values Each is selected in rotation by pressing the Values button. Once the desired mode is reached, all of the related functions can be easily viewed or set from the front panel. All LCD information is in plain English, no reference charts are needed to decipher codes. Although the can be elaborately programmed to provide specific protective functions, often the factory settings are adequate. In that case, you need only to set the full load amps (FLA) to put the unit in service. monitor real-time as well as historical data. ultiple units can be connected in a network system along with PLC s and personal computers. Additional hardware and software is required. Communications cards are also available from third party sources for other communication protocol standards. Phase Sequence - Prevents equipment damage due to accidental reversal of phases. CET 4 CET 4 CET 4 CET 4 CET 4 Up to 30 s can be connected together Phase Failure (voltage) - Standard phase failure feature monitors phase currents. This feature monitors phase voltage and will not allow an attempted start during a phase failure. Wye-Delta Starting - Provides the signal to switch from wye to delta by monitoring motor current. RTD Temperature Sensors - Connect up to 6 resistance temperature detectors (RTD s) for continuous monitoring of stator or bearing temperature and 1 RTD for monitoring of coolant or ambient temperature. Can be programmed for warning and/or trip. No.1 No.2 No.3 No.4 Ideal companion for Softstarters Solid state reduced voltage starters on large HP motors often have special requirements for overload protection. The can be a perfect solution because its trip characteristics can be matched exactly to the motor, equipment, and starting parameters. In addi- tion, the numerous protective and warning features of the can provide an added degree of safety and reliability. Features such as ground fault, phase failure, and the ability to connect external RTD s embedded in the motor can be especially important. See Softstarters in this catalog for detailed information. 44
