2 Recent changes in occupational health infrastructures in Israel have led the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Labour to support the establishment of a research department within the Institute for Safety and Hygiene. The department will be affiliated to the University of Tel-Aviv.

4 As you can see on the screen, until now we have operated in the field of research through our Projects Department, on the basis of ad hoc grants for each project. Now we are going to receive a permanent annual budget for a new Research Department. Of course we will expand this activity by applying for research grants as well. Initially the Research Department will have a staff of 18.

6 At the current stage, the department will include the following core units: Safety management and engineering Occupational hygiene and toxicology Occupational health and cancer research Occupational psychology Epidemiology
7 Goals and Objectives 1. To conduct and promote basic and applied research in occupational safety, health and hygiene (OSHH) in Israel as a part of the activity intended reducing work accidents and occupational diseases and improving the life quality of workers.
8 2. To serve as a major national leader in OSHH research, addressing a large variety of health hazards and threats present in the workplace and in dynamic and developing technologies.
9 3. To develop, update and apply professional tools and means which will assist industry and workplaces, as well as regulators, authorities and institutions, in protecting workers, health and safety.
10 Additional Assignments 1. Assist governmental authorities (Ministries of Labor, Health and The Environment, Department of Labor Inspection) in establishing a research agenda in accordance with national needs and priorities. 2. Assist in recognizing, investigating and evaluating health and safety hazards and populations at risk.
11 3. Develop methods to evaluate and assess occupational exposures and risks and the corresponding environmental, work-related, behavioral and organizational factors. 4. Investigate causality of accidents and occupational diseases in the occupational community.
12 6. Establish and maintain databases and information resources for future research and regulatory policies. 7. Conduct multidisciplinary studies and maintain interactions with the international scientific community.
13 As soon as the new department starts operating, a long term research program will crystallize, based on national needs, feedback from the field, and professional development. Through this process, research areas and goals will expand.
14 The program will be reviewed by a standing scientific committee, composed of researchers from academic institutes and experts in the field of occupational safety and health.
