1 AIM Hallmarks Learning Programmes Enablers Guidance notes Who can apply? Applicants for the enablers programme must either work in Museum Development in England, or work with museums in England in another capacity which involves supporting museums to develop and change Consultants and freelancers are encouraged to apply. We are looking for consultants whose current work involves organisational development, or who currently work in more specialist or technical areas and want to expand their work into broader management consultancy. Applicants must be able to commit to attending all three residentials, and to undertaking independent learning and working with other participants between each residential module. In addition, they must commit to undertaking a programme of action learning (typically shadowing a more experienced facilitator or a senior leader) alongside the residential modules. Applicants must either work for an organisation which is an institutional member of AIM or be an individual member, which offers significant benefits for freelancers, including a discount on AIM conference. Applicants can join at the point of application. The majority of the costs of each course are supported by Arts Council England. Participants are expected to contribute 250 per place for the museum enablers programme. These fees include all accommodation and refreshments, course materials and the support of AIM staff and our trainers, but do not include travel. We have some bursaries and travel grants available for those who can demonstrate need. We will assess applications using the following criteria: 1. Has the applicant demonstrated that have the capacity to support and challenge museums to grow? (see Question A) 2. Has the applicant shown a realistic understanding of their areas for growth? Is the training programme a good fit with those needs? (see Question B) 3. Has the applicant shown a good understanding of the needs of museums and the changing context for their work? (see Question C)

2 4. Does the applicant work in a role or in a freelance capacity which supports museums to develop and change? If not, do they have a clear plan to expand their work into this area? 3 *We will contact those who have requested support separately to request further information if their application is successful. A request for support does not form part of the initial assessment and we will assess all applications on merit in the first instance. However, our budget for support is limited so it may not be possible to offer financial support to all successful applicants who request it. Employer support (if appropriate) If you are employed by a Museum Development provider or by another organisation, we need the formal support of your employer to accept your application. Please ask your line manager, or another appropriate senior manager or board/committee member, to write in support of your application by to Helen Wilkinson, AIM Assistant Director, helenw@aim-museums.co.uk. Their should arrive by the deadline of 29 th January 2016 and should be no more than 200 words in length. The letter should: Confirm that they support your application Indicate how they hope that your participation in the programme will benefit your employer and the museums you work with Confirm that they are willing to support you to have appropriate time away from your dayto-day work to complete the programme. The time commitment is for 3 residentials, each lasting from 12pm on day 1, to 3pm on day 2 (in a venue with good transport connections); two half day peer learning meetings (in London), a programme of work-shadowing or other action learning lasting approximately five working days, and time to read and reflect between course modules. How you would benefit from the programme A. Give an example of a time when your support for a museum has made a difference to that organisation. What was it about how you behaved that made what you did effective? (200 words or fewer, links to criterion 1) B. What areas of your facilitation, support and consultancy skills do you hope to develop further through the programme? How will it complement other CPD opportunities you have benefitted from? (200 words or fewer, links to criterion 2) C. Suggest one way in which you think the museum sector in your region (or the kinds of museums you work with) will need to change over the next five years. How will the programme make you more effective in supporting museums to achieve this change? (200 words or fewer, links to criterion 3)
