1 November 2013 AREVA Hosts Open Houses on Kiggavik Project AREVA is hosting a series of open houses Nov in seven Kivalliq communities focusing on its proposed Kiggavik Project. Residents from the communities are encouraged to stop by to learn more about the Kiggavik Project and pose questions or offer comments to the AREVA team members there. More than 100 residents attended the first two days of the open house in Baker Lake, NU, the closest community to the proposed project. The Kiggavik Project is located 80 km west of Baker Lake. On Nov. 15, AREVA held an open house at Repulse Bay, near the Arctic Circle, which was attended by some 25 local residents. The tour concludes at Arviat on Nov. 21. In each community, AREVA representatives are available to meet with people interested in finding our more about the Kiggavik Project. Residents can also ask questions about AREVA s draft environmental impact statement on the Kiggavik Project, which was submitted to the Nunavut Impact Review Board (NIRB) in Earlier this year, AREVA provided responses to more than 400 technical comments from various organizations about the project. One key goal of the open houses is to receive feedback from residents on how to improve the project especially regarding how the project would monitor potential environmental effects and how it would mitigate any potential effects. This feedback may be incorporated in the final environmental impact statement, which the company expects to submit to NIRB late next year. In addition, AREVA staffers meet with local high school students to discuss potential careers in the uranium mining sector. They also fielded many questions about uranium mining, nuclear energy and other energy sources from students and teachers. For more information about the Kiggavik Project, please visit: AREVA Resources Canada Inc.
2 AREVA Makes Donation to Northern Spirits Program AREVA is proud to support a number of organizations and initiatives that benefit the communities in which we operate. Recently, AREVA s Manager of Northern Affairs Glenn LaFleur presented a cheque for $10,000 to Michelle Hewison, Committee Member for the Northern Spirits Program, an initiative that brings together Northern youth to develop their skills in music and visual arts. AREVA Presents to SIAST Mining Technology Program As a part of AREVA s ongoing commitment to the SIAST Mining Technology program, Senior Project Engineer Chris Blondeel recently volunteered his time to address approximately 50 first- and secondyear students from the program. Chris shared his past experiences as a mining technology student while attending the Haileybury School of Mines and the decisions that lead him to pursue a bachelor s degree in Mining Engineering from Michigan Tech University. Chris addressed various topics including common expectations employers generally have of mining technologists and shared his view on the value mining technicians and technologists add to the mining industry. Chris also encouraged students to consider pursuing a mining engineering degree after graduation. Thanks to Chris for taking the time to share his experiences with these students, and to the students for their enthusiastic participation in this session. Page 2 of 5
3 Environmental Monitoring at McClean Lake AREVA s network of policies, procedures and monitoring programs ensures that emissions from mining and processing remain as low as reasonably achievable. The graphs below show the differences between the regulatory limits and the sampling results from water released to the environment at the water treatment plant at McClean Lake for the past 12 months. The bars at the bottom of each graph show the concentrations of elements in water from our treatment plant. The lines across the top show the regulatory limits. The graphs indicate that concentrations of elements in our waste water are well below the regulatory limits. Environmental Incident Reported at McClean Lake AREVA staff discovered on Oct. 24 that the JEB Orepad liner had experienced a significant tear. The tear is initially suspected of having occurred during recent ore haul activities. Effects to the environment are expected to be negligable as the affected area will be scraped up before any repairs will commence. AREVA excavated the area to determine the full extent of the tear before any repairs took place. The sub-zero temperatures prevent any water from flowing through the breach. Page 3 of 5
