1 COOMBE WOMEN AND INFANTS UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL JOB DESCRIPTION Staff Grade Medical Scientist Repts to: Departmental Chief Medical Scientist, Chief Medical Scientist (Lab Manager), Consultant Head of Department and Direct of Pathology In the event of the appointment of a labaty manager, then the appointee to this post will also rept to the labaty manager instead of the Chief Medical Scientist (Lab Manager) Qualifications Each candidate must on the latest date f receiving completed application fms f the office: a) i. possess the Bachel in Science (Applied Science) Honours degree (Biomedical option) from the University of Dublin/Dublin Institute of Technology, Kevin Street; ii. iii. iv. possess the Bachel in Science Honours degree in Biomedical Science from the Joint University College Ck-Ck Institute of Technology course; possess the Diploma in Medical Labaty Sciences of the Dublin Institute of Technology, Kevin Street the Ck Institute of Technology awarded pri to 1994; possess the Certificate in Medical Labaty Sciences of the Dublin Institute of Technology, Kevin Street the Ck Institute of Technology the Galway/Mayo Institute of Technology (awarded pri to 1997); v. possess a recognised qualification at least equivalent to (i) (ii) above and b) Membership of, be eligible f membership of the Academy of Medical Labaty Science (MAMLS), pri to 1997, possess be eligible f Associate Membership of the Academy of Medical Labaty Science (AMAMLS). and c) The requisite knowledge and ability (including a high standard of suitability and management ability) f the proper discharge of the duties of the office. 1

2 GENERAL ACCOUNTABILITY The person chosen will: Maintain throughout the Hospital awareness of the primacy of the patient in relation to all Hospital activities. Participate in running the Labaty service that suppts the clinical needs of our patients and is consistent with the mission, vision, values and strategic plan of the Hospital. Participate in training staff as required. Participate in the implementation of operational processes to the standards of best practice, in der to optimise use of resources. Participate in the implementation of ISO 15189, which is patient centred and which measures and audits perfmance and client satisfaction. Actively participate in and promote continuing education and research activities consistent with the position. Promote open communication throughout the Labaty and the Hospital. Demonstrate behaviour consistent with the Values of the Hospital. On Call Rota Candidates may be placed on the On Call Rota contingent upon completion of their department specific training and the Hospital being satisfied that they have the required competency and experience to wk On Call. SPECIFIC ACCOUNTABILITY Service The chosen candidate will: - Perfm routine wk to the highest professional standards, as determined by the Labaty Management Team. Be responsible f the quality of their wk and carry out their duties in accdance with Hospital policy. Observe the strictest confidence when dealing with all aspects of patient Hospital infmation. 2

3 1.1 In co-operation with Consultant Head of Department, Chief Medical Scientist (Lab Manager) and other designated seni staff, participate in the introduction of new ideas and methods accding to hospital policy. 1.2 Participate as required in the registration, custody and stock level of the Labaty reagents and other materials held in the Directate. 1.3 Receive and recd details concerning mishaps, complaints and defects in supplies and equipment investigate the circumstances with appropriate team members and take the necessary actions and rept the findings as required, and as determined by the Chief Medical Scientist (Lab Manager). 1.4 Ensure that policy relating to the Labaty recd-keeping is followed. 1.5 Co-operate in evaluating equipment, consumable items and research projects. 1.6 Facilitate arrangements, where appropriate, to introduce professional and/ other visits to the Labaty. 1.7 Ensure, in co-operation with the Consultant Head of Department, Chief Medical Scientist (Lab Manager) and designated seni Staff, appropriate compliance with International and National guidelines and Standards f the provision of Labaty Services and actively participate in internal and external quality assurance. 1.8 Participate in the provision of appropriate statistical and management Infmation. 1.9 Participate in the commissioning of a computer-integrated management system f the Labaty Make the most effective and efficient use of developments in infmation Technology f both patient care and administrative suppt in a manner which integrates well with system throughout the ganisation. Health and Safety The chosen candidate will participate in ensuring that effective safety procedures are in place to comply not only with the Safety, Health and Welfare at Wk Act but also within the spirit of the Hospital s mission, vision and values, and that they are known and followed. Assist and co-operate with the Labaty Management Team in developing procedures to be followed in preventing and managing accidents occurring in the Labaty area. 3

4 NOTE: The extent and speed of change in the delivery of health care is such that adaptability is essential in this position. The incumbent will be required to maintain and enhance their professional knowledge, skills and aptitudes necessary to respond to a changing situation. The Hospital is at the developmental stage and, therefe, the job description must be regarded as an outline of the maj areas of accountability at the present time, which will be reviewed and assessed on an on-going basis. Knowledge and experience - Essential requirements The full range of Staff Grade Medical Scientist duties with some knowledge and experience in the speciality of the role. Participation in a multidisciplinary team. Patient recd management. Planning and Organising wk Collation of statistical infmation. Health and Safety regulations within the labaty Keeping abreast of new developments in the field. Knowledge and experience - Ideal requirements Hospital health service experience. Experience in a similar post. Experience in an ganisation of comparable size to the Coombe Women and Infants University Hospital. Skills Essential Good communication skills - verbal and written. Good interpersonal skills. Motivation Initiative Resilient and calm manner. Flexibility Ability to participate in an on call rota. Teamwk. Common sense Assertive Customer focused i.e. Actively takes responsibility f meeting internal customers and external customers requirements to their satisfaction. Example of internal customers: referring clinicians and other Hospital staff. etc External Customers: Patients, General Practitioners. Good people management skills Well developed problem analysis and problem solving skills 4
