1 Mater Misericordiae University Hospital Dublin Job Description & Person Specification Audiologist Job Title / Grade: Audiologist Department / Division: Audiology / Ear, Nose, Throat (ENT) Departments Location: Audiology / ENT Departments, Clinic 8, Whitty Building. Reporting Relationship: Chief Audiologist / Clinical ENT Leads /Assistant National Clinical Lead - Audiology Managerially Responsible to: Team Leader, Allied Health Professionals / Clinical & Diagnostic Services Directorate

2 JOB DESCRIPTION Job Purpose: The post holder will be a qualified audiologist whom will be expected to perform work involving a significant degree of responsibility and autonomy. The nature of work will include routine audiological and neuro-otological diagnostic assessments. The successful candidate will assist in audiovestibular diagnostic testing and help to develop the vestibular service, thus an interest in balance testing and rehabilitation is essential. The post holder will be expected to work with the audiology and ENT team as well as other multi-disciplinary team professionals. The department has developed a close working relationship and provides rapid access diagnostics for Oncology, Endocrinology, Neurology and A&E departments. The post holder will also be involved in Bone Anchored Hearing Aid (Baha) assessments and fittings, as part of the National Baha Programme. They will work with the team to ensure that clinical and professional standards are maintained at all times. In addition to the duties listed below, the audiologist must maintain continuous professional development whilst working towards higher levels of professional competence. Key Responsibilities: Service Delivery 1. To conduct adult diagnostic audiological and basic vestibular assessments as required. 2. To interpret the results of audiovestibular assessments and provide recommendations and reports to other health and educational professionals as necessary. 3. To take detailed case history from patients and/or significant others and employ questionnaires to be used as outcome measures tools. 4. To assist / perform under indirect supervision assessments using advanced electrophysiological investigations such as ABR, ASSR, VEMPs, OAE Suppression, diagnostic Speech Testing, Posturography, Caloric testing and Rotational ENG/VNG Chair testing. 5. To assist / perform under indirect supervision Baha and Middle Ear Implant assessments and rehabilitation. 6. To provide assessment, fitting and verification of CROS hearing aids where clinically appropriate. 7. To provide counselling to patients, relatives and carers on audiological conditions. 8. Taking of aural impressions, ordering of suitable earmoulds and be familiar with a range of analogue and digital hearing aids in order to select the correct amplification. 9. To provide guidance to patients on the use of prescribed hearing aids, environmental aids or assistive listening devices and on other issues relating to audiological problems. 10. To provide basic counselling and relevant information to patients suffering with Tinnitus and/or Hyperacusis. 11. Assist during assessments / rehabilitation of adult patients with learning difficulties or special needs. 12. To troubleshoot and determine the reasons for erroneous clinical test results. 13. Take responsibility for the safe use and maintenance of audiological equipment including ERA machines, audiometers, tympanometers, and computerized assessments. Ensure that clinical equipment is calibrated and in fit working order along with other team members. 14. The role will support the integration of Audiology Services for Adults.

3 Collaborative Working 1. To organise onward referral as necessary to other professionals and voluntary services, and to communicate with them on an ongoing basis as necessary. 2. To monitor audiological problems on an ongoing basis informing the client and/or family and the professionals involved, on any changes. 3. To facilitate liaison with services involved in the management of clients with audiovestibular problems. 4. Through their work, promoting the integration of services between acute and community settings. Communication and Information 1. To ensure that standards of clinical practice are maintained. 2. To assist in developing protocols, patient care plans, goal setting, outcome measurement and participate in auditing and other research and development projects. 3. To maintain a record of work activity and maintain files on patients referred to the service using computerised systems. 4. To produce appropriate reports on patient visits for distribution to the referring consultants, GPs or other professionals involved. 5. To provide the clinical managers any reports as required. 6. To carry out any other duties appropriate to the post as may be assigned by the team leader. Professional Responsibilities 1. To maintain own Continuing Professional Development in adherence to guidelines provided by the Irish Academy of Audiology and the British Society of Audiology. 2. To follow departmental and/or national protocols and assist in auditing / suggest improvements to working practices in conjunction with the Audiology / ENT team. 3. Participate in regular departmental or hospital Clinical Audit Activities and Research and Development Projects. 4. Participate in developing and reviewing new techniques in the Audiology field. 5. Participate in Regional / National Audiology training sessions as appropriate

Hygiene Standards The highest standard of hygiene must be maintained in the Hospital at all times and all staff members are responsible for ensuring compliance with the Hospitals requirements and standards with regard to hygiene. It is the responsibility of all staff to have a fundamental understanding of their individual responsibility in maintaining departmental & site hygiene standards. 4. Health and Safety Ensure that effective safety procedures are in place to comply not only with the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act (2005) but also within the spirit of the Hospital s mission, vision and values, and they are known and followed by staff. You are required to familiarise yourself with the requirements of employees under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act (2005) and to promote a work environment that is compliant with the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act (2005). Each staff member is individually responsible for ensuring that the Hospital remains a safe place to work. 5. Information Technology Ensure the most effective and efficient use of developments in information technology for administrative support in a manner, which integrates well with systems throughout the organisation. 6. Business Continuity Management Business Continuity Management (BCM) is a holistic management process that identifies potential impacts that threaten an organisation and provides a framework for building resilience and the capability for an effective response that safeguards the interests of its key stakeholders and reputation (BS 25999) All Staff employed in the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital are obliged to: Make themselves familiar with the Organisational Business Continuity Plan. Attend BCM education sessions provided for them. Familiarise themselves with their individual roles as set out in the departmental Business Continuity Plan and/ or the Organisational Business Continuity Plan. Note: These duties and responsibilities are reflection of the present service requirements and may be subject to review and amendment to meet the changing needs of the Hospital. The incumbent Senior Audiologist will be required to maintain, enhance and develop their professional knowledge, skills and aptitudes necessary to respond to a changing climate. The job description must be regarded as an outline of the major areas of accountability at the present time, which will be reviewed and assessed on an on-going basis.
