2 COURSE DESCRIPTION IIF GLOBAL SEMINAR ON Country and Sovereign Risk Management This three-day program will start with an overview presentation of the broad picture of the dimensions of country and sovereign risk, including the impact of evolving macroeconomic environment and growing regulatory requirements. With the groundwork laid, discussions will go deeper into credit risks at the sovereign level following an introduction to methodologies for internal ratings as used by leading players in the sovereign risk sphere. Additional sessions will explore current topical issues such as the growing importance of political risk and understanding the changing landscape for China. There will also be a case study and lively group discussions each day. The event will conclude with a panel discussion exploring the key issues facing country and sovereign risk management. Executive industry leaders and expert speakers will share their insights and experiences with participants throughout the program in interactive discussions. 6 SPEAKER PROFILES Roberto Sifon-Arevalo, Managing Director, Sovereign and International Public Finance Ratings, S&P Global Ratings Roberto Sifon-Arevalo is a Managing Director and Lead Analytical Manager for the Sovereign and International Public Finance group at S&P Global Ratings in New York. Currently he manages a team of analysts based in New York, Mexico City, Buenos Aires and Sao Paulo that follows sovereign and international public finance ratings in Latin America and the Caribbean. Since 2003, when Roberto joined the Latin American team, he has monitored credit ratings on sovereigns, regional and local governments. He has also been responsible for the credit ratings of several multilateral and development financial institutions throughout the region. Roberto s past work experience includes eight years in various analytical positions at Banco Santander Central Hispano and Banco Sudameris in Argentina. Roberto holds a degree in Business Administration from the Universidad de Belgrano, Buenos Aires, and a Master s degree in International Affairs, specializing in International Economic Policy, from Columbia University. Sonja Gibbs, Senior Director, Global Capital Markets, Institute of International Finance Sonja is one of the authors of the IIF s monthly Capital Markets Monitor, which focuses on risk assessment and financial market analysis across a range of asset classes in both developed and emerging economies; she also co-authors the IIF s Weekly Insight as well as the IIF s flagship report, Capital Flows to Emerging Market Economies. She and her team are also responsible for coordinating the IIF s G20 outreach programs. Sonja has spent over 20 years in banking and financial markets, most recently with Nomura International in London, where she was Chief Equity Strategist. Sonja is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), and received her M.B.A. and Bachelor s degrees from the University of California at Berkeley. Paul Sheard, Executive Managing Director, Chief Global Economist and Head of Global Economics and Research, S&P Global Paul Sheard has been Chief Global Economist and Head of Global Economics and Research for S&P Global since June Teams that Paul leads are responsible for providing the macroeconomic forecasts and analyses used by S&P Global s analysts during the ratings process, for conducting fixed income research and analyzing credit ratings performance, and for developing credit rating methodologies. He is a member of the S&P Global Executive Committee and of the Executive Committee of parent company McGraw Hill Financial. Previously, Paul held similar chief economist positions at Nomura Securities in New York and at Lehman Brothers in New York and Tokyo, and earlier he had been Head of Japan Equity Investments at Baring Asset Management. Paul speaks regularly at major conferences around the world and his views are frequently quoted in the international media. He was a member of the World Economic Forum Global Agenda Council on the International Monetary System in Earlier in his career, Paul was on the faculty at the Australian National University (ANU) and at Osaka University, and was a visiting researcher at Stanford University and at the Bank of Japan. Author or editor of several books and numerous articles on the Japanese economy, Paul won the Suntory-Gakugei Prize in the Economics Politics Division for his book, The Crisis of Main Bank Capitalism. 7 SPEAKER PROFILES Christine Phillpotts, Senior Vice President, Senior Research Analyst, Equities, AllianceBernstein Christine Phillpotts is a Senior Vice President and Senior Equity Research Analyst covering Africa for AllianceBernstein s Emerging and Frontier Markets portfolios, including the Next 50 Emerging Markets Fund. Prior to joining the firm in 2013, she was the Global Portfolio Manager for the Grassroots Business Fund (GBF), which invests in privately held companies in emerging and frontier markets. While at GBF, Phillpotts sourced, structured and supervised investments across several countries, including Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia, Ghana, Rwanda and Mozambique. As a member of the fund s internal investment committee, she also assessed and approved transactions in Latin America and Asia. Before that, Phillpotts was an equity research associate at J.P. Morgan Asset Management. Phillpotts holds a BA in economics from Columbia University, where she graduated summa cum laude, and an MBA from Harvard Business School, where she received first-year honors. Phillpotts serves on the board of directors of the New York Society of Security Analysts and is the co -chair of AllianceBernstein s Black Employee Resource Group. She is a Robert Toigo Foundation Fellow and a CFA charterholder. Kenneth Colangelo, Economist, Emerging Markets, AllianceBernstein Mr. Colangelo is a member of AllianceBernstein Fixed Income s economic research and strategy team with responsibilities mainly in Emerging Markets. He is the primary coverage economist for the Middle East and Africa Region, as well as Frontier credits. Prior to working in global research, Mr. Colangelo has taken associate roles in EM dedicated portfolio management and corporate research. He joined AllianceBernstein in 2007 following graduation from Cornell University, where he earned a BS in Industrial Labor Relations concentrating in International Relations. Paul Gruenwald, Managing Director, Chief Economist, Asia-Pacific, S&P Global Ratings Paul Gruenwald is the Chief Asia-Pacific Economist at S&P Global Ratings. Based in Singapore, he leads the economic research agenda and serves as the primary spokesperson on macro-economic matters across the region. Before joining S&P Global Ratings, Paul spent almost five years at Australia and New Zealand Banking Group (ANZ) as the Asia-Pacific Chief Economist, where he was responsible for helping set and direct ANZ s Asian and global economic research agenda, as well as building the bank s economic research efforts and profile in the region. Previously, Paul worked at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for nearly 16 years, where he led the team producing the IMF s Asian regional outlook reports. He was also the IMF Resident Representative to Hong Kong and Korea, the Deputy Chief of the China Division, and the country desk officer for Australia. 8 SPEAKER PROFILES Joydeep Mukherji, Managing Director, Latin America and the Caribbean Sovereign Ratings, S&P Global Ratings Joydeep Mukherji is a Managing Director at S&P Global Ratings. He is currently the sector specialist for Sovereign Ratings in Latin America and the Caribbean. Joydeep joined the Sovereign group of S&P Global Ratings in 1996 and has worked with credit ratings in Asia and the Western Hemisphere. Before joining S&P Global Ratings, Joydeep worked for five years in corporate and investment banking in Canada with CIBC Wood Gundy, working mainly with asset securitization. He has also worked as an economic consultant to the Asian Development Bank in the Philippines and briefly as a financial journalist with the Globe and Mail in Canada. After graduation, he worked as an Intern in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario, and subsequently as an aide to the Treasurer of Ontario. Joydeep received his bachelor of arts degree in Economics from the University of Toronto and his master s degree in Public Policy from the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University. He speaks French, Spanish, and Bengali. Alexander (Sandy) Wolfson, Managing Director and Head of Global Country Risk Management, Citi Sandy Wolfson is the Managing Director and Head of Global Country Risk Management. Responsible for assessing and managing country risk across Citi s global franchises, setting limits on economic risk capital and cross border exposure, and running the Country Risk Committee which reviews Citigroup s largest country franchises. Prior to joining Citigroup, he worked as an economist at the International Monetary Fund ( ), working primarily on Indonesia and Japan. He holds a Ph.D. in economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Brad Carr, Deputy Director, Regulatory Affairs, Institute of International Finance Brad Carr is a Deputy Director in Regulatory Affairs at the IIF. Since joining the IIF in May 2014, he has worked on the IIF RWA Task Force (IRTF), analyzing banks credit risk modelling practices and articulating the criticality of risk-sensitivity in the bank capital framework in the IIF s September 2014 report Risk-sensitivity: the important role of internal models. Brad has also led the IIF s submissions on Basel & IOSCO consultations on corporate governance, credit risk management practices and cross-border derivatives regulation, as well as estimating the quantified impacts of regulation on market liquidity. Brad joined the IIF from National Australia Bank (NAB), where he had previously worked for 15 years in a variety of capacities, including credit, active portfolio management and relationship management. Brad s responsibilities at NAB included managing credit derivatives, preparing wholesale and corporate business units for the impacts of the Basel II & III regulatory changes, embedding capital and liquidity dynamics into pricing models, and interpreting changes in bank regulation for their downstream market impacts and effects for bank clients. Brad s qualifications include a Bachelor of Economics from the University of Western Australia and a Masters in Science & Technology Commercialization from the University of Adelaide. 9 SPEAKER PROFILES Laura J. Feinland Katz, Managing Director, Senior Criteria Officer, S&P Global Ratings Laura J. Feinland Katz, Managing Director, is a Senior Criteria Officer, and Chief Credit Officer for Latin America. Laura overseas the global criteria development and approval for government ratings sectors, including Sovereign Ratings, Public Finance, and Government-Related Entities. She also has had a focus on criteria projects relating to Emerging Markets and topics which affect multiple sectors and regions. Laura is based in New York. In her previous positions at S&P Global Ratings, Laura was Quality Officer for Latin American ratings, and Chief Credit Officer for Latin America, responsible for identifying and resolving strategic criteria issues in the region. Before joining S&P Global Ratings in 1995, Laura was a Vice President in the Bankers Trust Latin American Merchant Banking group, and previously held a variety of positions in Latin American corporate and trade finance at Marine Midland Bank and Manufacturers Hanover Trust. Laura holds a bachelor of science degree in Economics from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, and a master of business administration degree from New York University. She is a Chartered Financial Analyst. Laura speaks English and Spanish. Dan Alamariu, Executive Director, Political and Country Risk, UBS Dan Alamariu is an Executive Director with UBS' Political and Country Risk. He is Head of US and Canada Country Risk, and oversees analysis of Latin American countries. Dan spent over seven years at political risk consultancy Eurasia Group, where he was Head of Product Development, helping develop quantitative and qualitative risk analysis products, such as that firm's Political Trajectories. At Eurasia, he also worked as Director of Financial Services and Comparative Analytics. He has also worked for Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi, Deloitte Consulting, and JP Morgan. He is a graduate of Georgetown University, and has a master's from Columbia. Frank Linden, Senior Risk Management Officer, Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency Frank provides risk management expertise to MIGA s Economics and Policy Group, the political risk insurance arm of the World Bank. The Group is responsible for assessing project and country risks; for ensuring projects supported by MIGA are developmentally sound; and for verifying that operations are consistent with good economic policy and sustainable for the host country as well as financially sustainable for MIGA. Prior, Frank worked for 11 years at Merrill Lynch where he was responsible for Merrill's country and sovereign risk management as part of the firm's credit risk department; prior to that, he was an officer and a senior analyst in the strategic analysis division of the Military Intelligence Agency in the Netherlands. Frank obtained an MA from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy (Tufts University) with a concentration in international business and finance. Corbett, Managing Director and Global Head, Investment Risk Management, State Street Global Advisors Tim is a Managing Director and Global Head of SSGA's Investment Risk Management team. The team is responsible for investment risk management across the firm's portfolios. Mr. Corbett serves as a member of SSGA's Senior Leadership Team, Investment Committee, North America Executive Committee, Investment Strategy Review Committee, Corporate Responsibility Committee, and Corporate Country Risk Committee. Prior to joining the investment risk team in 2008, Tim was a senior portfolio manager responsible for global Fundamental Equity products. From 2000 to 2004, he served as a junior portfolio manager and equity research analyst. Prior to this role, Tim was a member of SSGA's Global Structured Products Operations group, where he specialized in international developed market and emerging market strategies. Tim joined the firm in 1996 and has focused on risk management, portfolio construction, equity research and portfolio management. Tim holds a BS in Finance from Boston College, an MBA from Bentley University and an MS in Corporate Finance from Bentley University. Tim is also a New England chapter member of the Global Association of Risk Professionals. Emilian Belev, Head, Enterprise Risk Analytics, Northfield For more than a decade, Emilian Belev has led the research and development of Northfield's Enterprise Risk Analytics. The range of models under his responsibility includes equity and fixed income, currency, interest rate, and credit derivatives, structured products, directly owned real estate, private equity and infrastructure. Emilian is also responsible for designing an integrated framework for all asset classes to be analyzed in a coherent, accurate, and economically intuitive fashion. Emilian has introduced various innovative methodologies in the areas of convertible bonds modeling, MBS path dependency, efficiency of numeric derivative pricing algorithms, credit risk analysis, infrastructure investments, and directly owned real estate. Emilian has presented on some of these topics at various industry events in North America and Europe. Emilian is an actively involved CFA, holder of the Certificate in Advanced Risk and Portfolio Management, a member and founding member of respectively QWAFAFEW Boston and QWAFAFEW Toronto, a member of the PRMIA expert advisory group for Market Risk, a winner of the 2013 Professional Risk Management International Association award for New Frontiers in Risk Management, and recipient of the 2015 American Real Estate Society award for Best Practitioner Research. Emre Tiftik, Deputy Director, Global Capital Markets, Institute of International Finance Mehmet Emre Tiftik is Deputy Director in the Capital Markets and Emerging Markets Policy Department. His major fields of study are international economics and finance with particular interests in G7 and Emerging Europe. Prior to joining the IIF in 2011, Mr. Tiftik served as an instructor and teaching assistant at the University of Maryland, College Park (UMD). From 2005 to 2008, he worked as a research assistant at the Middle East Technical University (METU) in Turkey. Prior to that, he served as a junior research analyst in the Ministry of Labour and Social Security of Turkey where he participated in the evaluation of grant projects under the Delegation of European Union to Turkey. Mr. Tiftik has received numerous academic honors and awards including the Middle East Economic Association s Ibn Khaldun Prize (2009), University of Maryland s Graduate Fellowship (2008), and the Turkish Economic Association s Research Price (2006). Mr. Tiftik completed his Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics and a Master s degree in Financial Mathematics at METU. 11 SPEAKER PROFILES Mark Flanagan, Assistant Director, Division Chief, Debt Policy Division, Strategy Policy and Review Department, International Monetary Fund Mark Flanagan is Assistant Director of the IMF s Strategy Policy and Review Department (SPR). He is responsible for the work of SPR s Debt Policy Division, and is also a senior reviewer for IMF work on a number of European, Middle Eastern and African countries. Prior to his time in SPR, he was a mission chief or manager for several Fund-supported crisis programs, including Ukraine, Iceland, and Greece. His 18 year career in the Fund also includes extensive work in the European and Fiscal Affairs Departments. AJ Mediratta, Co-President and Partner, Greylock Capital Management, LLC Mr. Mediratta joined Greylock Capital as a Portfolio Manager in June 2008, following the acquisition of Bear, Stearns & Co. Inc by JPMorgan Chase, became a Partner in August 2009 and Co-President with Hans Humes in October He was previously a Senior Managing Director and Head of Bear Stearns International Debt Capital Markets Group. His group was responsible for the capital market financing transactions for sovereign, quasi-sovereign and corporate clients of Bear Stearns in Latin America, Asia and the Middle East. From , his group underwrote in excess of $30 billion (U.S.) of securities in more than fifteen countries worldwide, and acted as a financial advisor on a number of corporate and sovereign debt restructurings. He joined Bear Stearns in October 1997 from Credit Lyonnais Securities (USA) Inc., where he headed the fixed-income Structured Products Group for emerging markets in New York. Before joining Credit Lyonnais Securities in late 1995, Mr. Mediratta spent three years at The Weston Group, a New York based investment banking boutique, specializing in the origination and structuring of private placement issues out of Latin America. Prior to Weston, which he joined after graduating from the Columbia University Graduate School of Business, he worked in the International Division of the Export-Import Bank of the United States in Washington D.C.
