After gaining experience as a Peer Supporter/Recovery Specialist, what topics or skills do you think would be most helpful for future Peer Supporter/Recovery Specialists? Ethics, advocacy Self care importance. Advocacy Communication, listening skills. Self Disclosure Training for clinical supervisers Motivational Interviewing and Trauma Informed Care motivational interviewing. Teaching peers how to locate resources on their own in their community using the internet (google, facebook, etc.) to be less dependent on others for this task. Knowledge of community resources Understanding Agency(ies)Intercommunication Training in advocating for peers, and dealing with children and family services. Networking skills / grants and funding sources Self help knowledge and community connections. Outreach to the community to educate and de-stigmatize the seeking of assistance for drug/alcohol addiction or mental health issues. Stigma, ethics, and boundaries Maintaining autonomy as a team member How to market myself. That recovery comes in many forms... Dealing with stigmas Addiction and Mental health Promoting the need for Peer Supporters. Advocacy at State/Federal Levels. Message Training. Peer Support for Peer Supporters. How to be a good listener How to implement peers in vocational programs. How to advance to supervisor Addiction Education
14 Understand what your community does and doesn't offer in ways of support Tolerance for other professionals that don't understand the role of peer supporters Systems Self care Intervention Professional Certification; Job opportunities None-verbal body language Mental health awareness Circle of concern and circle of influence Share your experience strength and hope Motivational interviewing Helping addicts from out of state get identification A change in Medicaid coding that supports addiction/recovery providers ability to hire a Peer Supporter/Recovery Specialist. Nothing really, most things you need to learn are done on the job, cant really teach in the classroom. Available community resources Discharge readiness, resource information Ethics for individuals who have never been employed in this type of social services field. Teach boundaries to those too. Motivational Interviewing., setting boundaries How to start your own Peer Supporter/Recovrry Specialist Non-Profit or Profit Business. Listening, to move forward no matter the situation. Education on individual diagnoses Ethics Cultural competency Open communication Personal (self) Wellness Maintenance. How to help guide a person to their own conclusions. Self Care More about advocating for peers how to when to when not to Listening skills and speaking skills. Mental health and addiction Workshops on how to pitch peer services to local agencies that do not employ peer supporters. Information on the many different resources available. boundaries Since I currently work for a SAMHSA grant that provides vocational services to peers, I would like to see more vocational in the training. Steve Harrington worked with Boston University to develop a program that implements peers in vocational services. The current grant program I am with Individual Placement and Support developed by Dartmouth and taught to us by Case Western did not implement Peer Support. Myself and the other CPS I work with are paving the way for others to follow. Sharing your recovery story. Letting people know that you have struggles too. That peer supports are not fixers. I have run into that a lot since I started training three years ago. I want to help you fight your battles and support you always.
15 self care, advocacy assistance More education and training on helping clients with housing applications with the Shelter Board Increase the frequency or opportunities to exchange information that the recovery coaches would benefit from and stay engaged in. Make sure to take care of yourself first. Never take anything personal as everyone is on a different path. Listening skills Dual Diagnosis Public Speaking, Alcohol/Drug Addiction Training, Community Resource Training, Computer Training Leadership training for non-profit organizations. Activities Ideas cultural competency Working with fellow peers on your team, and being supervised by a peer. Both seem to be more difficult than usual. More education classes to get more peer specialists. Education & Communication Dual Recovery. I think a little more time on this subject would benefit individuals who suffer mentally and use their addictions to help cope. Add some you tube tutorials in the training How to achieve a new healthier residence ie moving away from the dysfunction. Supervision.
