1 30- Day List Building Plan for an Ecommerce Site Day What to 1 If you are new to marketing, choose an provider. If you aren t, you have opt-in forms on every page of your site? Set up your 2 provider account 3 Set up automated updates Need to know which provider is right for you? Basic setup for your new provider account would include opening and paying for your account, importing your list, uploading your logo and other customizations for your account. If you already had an provider, add social sharing buttons to your messages and ask your subscribers at the end of every Do you know someone who would benefit from what you just read? If you have a blog (and you should!) set up the RSS-to- feature if your account has that (most service providers offer RSS to ), then create a simple template for your messages that includes space to promote 3-6 related products. 1 hour to research and ponder which service provider is best for you. Just research this for today n t pull the trigger yet. 1 hour for very basic set up with your new service provider. 1 hour to finish setting up your shiny new account You need the functionality a real service provider gives. So you can actually start using the account, and it will save you time later. Take a day between ing your research and opening an account. It gives you more time to think about which provider you want to go with. Using RSS to will save you hours of work. 4 Add an opt-in form to the top and bottom of every page 5 Offer an incentive to signup If you already had an provider, add your best into the field where people enter their addresses. This increases signups. Create the opt-in form for the upper right hand corner first. Get it to look just right, then copy it, edit it a wee bit, and put the revised version into the footer of your site. This saves time. If your pages have enough content for lots of scroll, consider adding a 3 rd form in the middle of your navigation column. 10% off an order is an OK sign up, but it s not really enough. Try 15% off your next order to really increase opt-ins. See How 300 Retailers Use Marketing to find out which incentives are used most. 40 minutes for the first form, 20 minutes for the second form 30 mins set up the discount code, 30 mins to edit the opt-in forms. You can t get more subscribers if they n t have a way to sign up. Adding a form to the footer will get you about 20% more subscribers than you otherwise would have gotten. You ll get about 100% more subscribers if you offer an incentive. It s wildly effective, especially with a GREAT incentive.

If you n t have AWeber, consider Visual Website Optimizer or Optimizely.Test your incentive s headline, or the copy on your opt-in button. 1 hour to edit your opt-in form and sign up process so they get the free report/freemium Testing is the difference between success and failure. If you ve got less than 2000 visitors a month, just keep working on that signup incentive. 8 Add a pop-up with an opt-in form Use the pop-up your service provider offers, or use the plugin Pippity, or Opt-in Monster, or any of the other pop-up/lightbox options. Set the pop-up to show after someone has been on your site for at least 30 seconds, and only show the pop-up once per visit or less. 1 hour to learn how the pop-up works & to get it to work. Reason #1: Pop-ups n t have to be annoying and sleazy. Reason #2: Pop-ups can increase opt-ins by % (that is not an exaggeration). 9 Add a send to a friend link on all product pages People still send s to others about items they want. Make it easy for them to this. 1 hour or more to choose which tool you want to use for this, or to tweak the sharing buttons you have now to show You ll get more sales, and you ll also increase your list if you format the send to a friend properly. 10 to join your list when people leave product reviews This is similar to prompting people to join when they comment on your blog, and it works for the same reasons. At least an hour could be more depending on your review software. You ll get about 5-10% more subscribers. 11 to join your list (or to sign up for your ed course) to any printed materials Got a printed catalog? Add list prompts? Do other direct mail? Add it there, too. Even add list optin prompts to invoices. Add it to packing slips. Consider creating stickers for any materials that are already printed. 1 hour to create opt-in stickers for your already-printed works. If they were interested enough to read something you sent them, they might well be interested enough to get on your list. 12 tab to your Facebook page Almost every service provider now has a Facebook app that makes it really easy to this. Bonus: Got any cool content or special report besides your incentive? Set up an gate and post that content behind the gate on your Facebook 1 hour (you ll probably have extra time). If you want to build your list, it s critical to get that opt-in form out where the world can see it.

Include a compelling call to action. 15 minutes to edit the text in your profile, 45 more minutes if you make a custom landing page for Twitter visitors on your site. You ll get a reasonable trickle of new subscribers from this link. 14 Add a testimonial near your opt-in box/es If you n t have any testimonials on hand, look through some s from readers to see if anything pops. It is also OK to directly ask a few of your most enthusiastic customers for a testimonial, or to look through blog comments. Instead of a testimonial, it s also good to mention you hold special sales only for subscribers. Less than an hour Ideally, the testimonial would be specifically for your messages, but any testimonial that supports your company will also help people trust you enough to sign up for your newsletter. 15 Add 2 opt-in forms on your About page Add these forms between the paragraphs or sections of your About 20 minutes to create the opt-in forms. 30 minutes to place them and test them. About pages are usually the 2 nd most visited page on a site. They often have the highest opt-in rate. 16 Ask people who just commented on your blog to sign up Use the free plugin Comment Redirect to this. Bonus idea: You could also add an opt-in form at the end of all your posts. Some bloggers/writers very well with this. 15 minutes to install plugin. 45 minutes to create the page for optins. If they care enough to comment, they may want to hear what else you have to say. 17 Add annotations to your YouTube videos Want to include a prompt to join your list into your videos? You can. Here s how: answer/92710 and ojp8coo2tem Bonus: Post your videos on your website, and include an gate like Wistia to get access to the videos. 30 minutes to learn how to it. 30 mins to actually it, and then fuss with it a bit to get it to actually work (can take a few tries sometimes). There are many software plugins & apps that let you add embeds to YouTube videos, but they only work on your website, not on YouTube. But Annotations actually work on YouTube. 18 Test the Opt- In Content Locker plugin to gate content on your site 19 Promote your s and your ideas - on Pinterest Gated content is content people can t see unless they give you something for it like their address. This $12 plugin will let you, say, show a TV interview you did, or a resource that s worth giving up an address for. Got any online tutorials or guides? Those could be gated. Pinterest is extremely ecommerce friendly, so use it to build your list too. You can add links to pins, of course, which means you can drive people to an opt-in 15 minutes to buy and install minutes to set it up for the first time. 10 minutes after that minutes per Pin to create an enticing image, and write a great description. It s easier for the website visitor than going through an opt-in process, & it will get you a more subscribers. It s the easiest content gating system I ve found. If your audience fits the Pinterest audience, it s a way to get more eyeballs to your opt-in forms. 20 Put a sign-up promo in your signature line of all employees Just edit the signature line in their client. 15 minutes or less. If you re swapping s with someone, they re most likely interested in your work. Customer service s especially well with this tactic.

Bonus: send people to a landing page designed to get them to sign up for your s, not to the home 30 minutes to redesign the card; 30 mins to reorder mins to create a landing If you d give them your card, they re probably interested in your work. They might be interested in your s, too. 22 Set up text to join or Forms to Go to get subscribers at events & trade shows Some providers offer text to join. If you ve got GetResponse use their Forms on the Go app. Constant Contact and MailChimp also have tablet opt-in apps. About an hour to install the app, figure it out & set it up. So you can get new subscribers at in-person events. It s WAY better than using a sign-up sheet. Add content 23 to your weekly message that s not available anywhere else 24 to have people join your list when they place an order This is the that has sale items not seen anywhere else. Bonus: Share on Facebook that this week s has sale items available only to subscribers. This is an obvious one, but if you re not ing it, it can make a big difference. It s also very important to not automatically add people to your list just because they placed an order. What if you offered them a small discount on their next order if they actively choose to get on your list? 1 hour to plan the content & begin writing/creating it Probably several hours to incorporate this into your checkout process & test it. One of the main reasons people sign up for s is for sales. Give them what they want. Asking permission to mail people is critical. People who have ordered from you before are more likely to buy from you again. 25 Land a guest post on a fairly big site Look for a site with at least 5-10,000 Twitter followers, or more than 1,000 unique visitors per day. You need significant traffic to make this worthwhile. Your guest post needs to be great. Put the time into it to make it great. Don t want to guest blog? Get yourself interviewed instead. Use your author bio space to sell (soft sell, not hard sell) these readers on why they should sign up for your list (ie, what s in it for them). 1 hour getting the guest post gig 1 st hour writing the 3 hours if you want to write a really great post). 2 nd hour writing 3 hours) ing gives you free, pre-selected traffic to your opt-in box. Many writers use this as their primary list-building technique Calculate how much a subscriber is worth to you Create a landing page to send your guest post traffic to. Tweet it. Pin it. Update your Facebook page & your Google+ Even tell your existing subscribers about it. You want this post to be super-popular. See my post on calculating subscriber value, and the subscriber value calculators.
