1 PreK-12 Reading Endorsement/Graduate Certificate Program The Ohio Reading Endorsement/Graduate Certificate program is designed to provide students with evidence-based practices to support students at differing stages of reading development throughout the elementary, middle, and secondary years. The program satisfies the coursework requirement for the Ohio Department of Education's Reading Endorsement and meets CAEP (formerly, NCATE) standards for specialization in Reading. Reading Endorsement/Graduate Certificate Outside of Ohio Students seeking to add the Reading Endorsement to a teaching license in a state other than Ohio or in a country other than the United States are advised to contact the licensing bureau in that state or country to determine the applicability of the University of Cincinnati endorsement/certificate courses. Reading Endorsement/Certificate Requirements Candidates for the Reading Endorsement/Certificate must: Possess a bachelor's degree from an accredited university Hold a current and active early childhood, middle childhood, or adolescent/young adult teaching license. (Reading Endorsement/Certificate cannot be added to a temporary or substitute license.) Priority acceptance will be given to those with 2 years of teaching experience Additional Reading Endorsement/Certificate Stipulations Successful completion requires passing the Ohio Assessments for Educators (OAE) tests/assessments, Reading Subtests I and II. Go online to for additional information and application for this test. No degree will be awarded at the completion of the program. Candidates who are in the Certificate program will have their transcripts annotated noting this certificate was completed. Candidates who successfully complete the course of study and pass the OAE will be recommended for the Ohio Reading Endorsement. Coursework must be completed before taking the OAE. Successful completion requires receiving a minimum grade of B- in each of the required courses. Program Requirements The Reading Endorsement/Certificate consists of 6 graduate level courses, for a total of 18 semester credit hours. Students must apply to the Reading Endorsement/Certificate Program the semester before they wish to begin courses. To ensure review of your application prior to the start of classes, your application must be received by July 15th for Fall Semester admission; December 1st for Spring Semester admission; April 1st for Summer Semester admission. If you plan to take LSLS 7028: Literacy Assessment, Instruction, and Practicum I, during your first semester, you will also need to submit the appropriate practicum paperwork by the first day of classes. Master's in Education Degree Options All Endorsement/Certificate coursework may be applied toward the Master's degree in Literacy & Second Language Studies (PreK-16 Reading/Literacy Instruction Specialization). Information about the M.Ed. in Literacy & Second Language Studies can be found at: or by contacting Dr. Connie Kendall Theado, Program Coordinator, at kendalce@ucmail.uc.edu or The M.Ed. in Literacy & Second Language Studies is an online program.
